Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 EagleMan Triathlon : Official Thread eyeofthetiger2007 - 2011-05-09 9:07 AM when you say windy, do you mean that it is windy enough to not use a rear disc wheel? If you have one, wind is no reason not to use it. That'll actually help. It's your front wheel that would be screwy with wind. Then again I'm 220 so wind doesn't bug me all that much other than headwind sapping all the will to live occasionally. |

I'd say run the disk. It's more of a headwind anyway. The question is I guess at that weight how are your bike handling skills in the wind? I can't really compare anything for ya as I am about 185 lbs so the wind does not scare me at all and I'd run the disk if I didn't just put it on on EBay.... I'll be riding either 808 or H3 on my bike. Every year I've done this course the wind plays out in a similar fashion. You head out of town with this massive tail mind and then there are a few protected sections of the course. Next thing you know you start the return trip back to town and BAM. Big corn field with a huge head wind. I only remember super heavy gusts in 2006. I think that would be grounds to not run the disk. Way I see it.... Bring all your race wheels. That way you can make a game time decision. Edited by gadzooks 2011-05-09 8:56 AM |

Veteran 106 Gloucestershire, England | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 EagleMan Triathlon : Official Thread I rode the course as well on Saturday. I'm 140lb and was using Hed Jet 6 front and back. Didn't have a problem with the wind on the day with that set up. Echo Dan's comments - it was a nice ride. Smithville is part new asphalt - part old, although I think they have done all of the other side of the road. No idea whether they plan to retarmac the final section before the race. Adrian |

Elite 3770 | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 EagleMan Triathlon : Official Thread Smithville was half and half. I rode it on Saturday too. Thats where you turn off the highway. Interestingly it was windy out in the refuge, and where you turn left to go to Goatees, there was a lot of crabs! Someone musta had a loose crate. The man that was marking the road was just ahead of us the whole ride, it was funny. Literally he'd pull up in front of us and mark the road! So it is freshly marked. Although now there are a ton of little marks everywhere, thanks to the Pillars ride. Water was extremely warm. I swam last year 2 weeks prior without a wetsuit and had a bad feeling about it being nonwetsuit, and I was right. I have that vibe again this year, so be prepared. |

The surface water temp here right now is 77.1 degrees and 10 miles north of here it's 80.1 degrees. In Cambridge on the Choptank it 81.3 at the surface during the last hour. The open bay has a fair amount of deeper water that has yet to warm up, so when we get some decent wind to mix things up we'll probably see that temperature fluctuate (downward), but I think this gives you an idea of how things may be shaping up for race day. In any event I'd like to be prepared. If you look at this graph you'll see that the trend is upward for the past week, as you'd expect, but there are some periods of time where it cools off (at night, wind mixing, etc). I'd expect that the temps will continue to rise generally, but given that there are some 'cool' fronts forecasted to come through I'd expect that the rate of increase (overall slope) will level out and the amplitude of the temperature drops will increase (bigger decreases in an overall warming trend). It can only get so hot... |

I got royally screwed over this year and do not take off till 8:30!!! Why do the older age groupers get to go before the young guys? Got some cheese with that "whine"? ;-) Don't know but you probably won't meet up with a few of the "old" AG folks anyway as there are some pretty fast 50+ AG folks out there... check times from years past. Trust me, a few of them will finish before you or at least will be on the run when you start it. So, I don't think overall you're going to have a problem if you're worried about crowds on the course. The field does spread out a lot and I've not had a problem with a lot of traffic on this course. And just to note, 2 years ago, the 50-54 folks were where you are this year back in 2009 when I did Eman last. I swear, I kidded folks I should've set up a lounge chair and an umbrella I was waiting so long for my wave to start. The good thing about being in the back was that a lot of folks were done and off thet course. The bad thing was that it was just a longer day. Anyway, good luck you young whipper snapper you. ;-) |

Extreme Veteran 423 Frederick, Maryland | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 EagleMan Triathlon : Official Thread In addition to the weather forecast and water temp, folks probably would like to know about sea nettles (i.e. jellyfish) too. This site has problems loading sometimes and it's still experimental. but if it's up, you can zoom into the Cambridge area and see what the current forecast is. Looks like it might be updated weekly: http://chesapeakebay.noaa.gov/forecasting-sea-nettles In 2009, we did have folks get hit here and there. More of an annoyance than anything else. Usually there's not enough salinity this time of year to have large amounts of nettles in the Choptank, but they do start sneaking in there during June. Edited by sbrdave 2011-06-03 5:36 AM |

Highs in the low 80s and lows in the upper 60s. So far, so good Unfortunately, anything out past 7 days is using a lower resolution forecast model, though trends are important to watch. While I start looking at the models now for trends, really won't be able to start pinning down the forecast until this Sunday evening/Monday morning. Just too variable now. The one model I just looked at has showers coming through in the late morning into the afternoon. But it was as you said above when I looked at it yesterday. I'll start posting my weather thoughts next week. |

We'll find out the actual specifics on race day, until then it's guesswork. I've been a pilot too long to believe long range forecasts and even some tomorrow forecasts. |

Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 EagleMan Triathlon : Official Thread Warning: Whine ahead. If you're not interested in a bit of whining, go on to the next post. I posted this in my logs but considering I'm not the only one dealing with life getting in the way of this race I'll add to the collected misery Kinda sad in a way about this race. I wanted it to be an A race. Guess not. It's kinda hard to get pumped up about it now. That's showing in my training and logs recently I know. Dad died in March and that was about 3 weeks of screwed up getting him taken care of. No, I don't begrudge Dad all that, it just exists as "life, other than training". Right as I get back into the swing of things the lady cuts me off and I'm laid out for a few days and have to take it a bit easy for a few weeks. Hell, that's at the peak of build and most of peak. I've come back a bit but I don't have the miles under my butt on the bike for this race. As long as I can do the bike in about 3 hours I'll beat the cut off. Won't be the first one I've walked but I think I'm going to be able to run a bit as long as it's not at the HELL setting for heat. The good news is I started this year at around 1:52/100 yds. That's around 1600-1650 yds in 30 minutes. I've been doing 1800 yds in 30 minutes pretty consistently for over a month now, about 1:42/100 yds. This is going to be a long training day for me. I NEED to get into the swing of things for IMFL in a few weeks, though. |

No worries and I've been interested in the "HELL" forecast myself, so I started to look at the long range forecasts a few days ago myself since they came up on the 10-day forecasts charts. But, like you being a pilot who has to keep up with the weather, I've been a weather guy too long as well to believe in long range forecasts. Heck, it's sometimes difficult to believe the 1-day forecast ;-) Your next post - sorry things haven't worked out and also about your Dad. But, seems like you're readjusting expectations accordingly and also using this for IMFL training. I envy you if you get to go. My plans for completing my first IM distance this year were pushed back to hopefully next year due to training and financial issues this year. Reality of life's events just happen sometimes. More on weather and racing later and wishin' you a good training day on June 12! Never know...life also hands out some good surprises too! Edited by sbrdave 2011-06-03 7:12 AM |
