rottieguy - 2008-07-29 2:35 PM From Accuweather Saturday, Aug 2 High: 94 °F RealFeel®: 98 °F Very hot and humid with sunshine and patchy clouds Now I have to hope Matt swims his arse off and Trixie rides like a ferret on crack on the bike! Had to figure it was going to be hot and humid since I joined there team a little over a week ago, must be my bad karma. Might have to break out the sheik hat with the nice white neck cover.

... or a sombrero.

Actually, that would be awesome.

Maybe Jorge knows if they make sombreros in Cool Max or any other tech fabrics ?

Thanks for the weather update Jorge. Hopefully the light winds will keep the lake calm.

"How many minutes apart do the waves start?

Waves will start every 4 to 5 minutes. You will be notified closer to the event what the finalized break between waves will be."

If the website is correct, they are sending the waves in numerical order, and if the race starts at 7:00 that puts you at about 8:00ish. I'm in wave 15. That's going to be a long wait...

Last year I was wave 15 and did the math based on 5 minute intervals and planning on a 8:15 departure.  They were actually much tighter (~3min)and I think I was off swimming before 8:00am.

3' spread isn't much. No wonder the bike course was congested last year. I wonder if spreading it out to 4-5' will help much.

I don't think anything will help the congestion- it's a relatively flat course with a lot of men trying to PR. Just know it's going to be congested and don't get mad when you see people drafting.

I CAN'T WAIT TO RACE!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks, I'll go in expecting the worst. I had someone sucking my wheel for a good 15' at Racine 2 weeks ago. Surprisingly, I didn't get upset about it... but maybe that's b/c the draft marshall caught him

Tom Z at slowtwitch said the waves will be 4 min spread. Jazz is right, flat course with lots of people =  crowded course hence don't fret over what's going on. That been said please know the rules, stay to your right, pay attention for aother riders, don't block and PLEASE let us all each do our part and don't draft cause everyone is doing it. IMO there is always a away to do the right thing and ride legal even in crowded races

Do they penalize for drafting if you temporarly bunch up during an intersection turn or do you get a few seconds grace?

Also, do I need to pass a whole group or what if I only pass a few and tuck in behind someone and ease back to get out of his/her draft zone? Is this not nice to the people I just passed?

Forgive me for sounding so ingnorant, but I want to be a good competitor, respectful, and at the same time, ride my race.

The largest race I have been in had about 600 athletes racing. This will be very new to me!

There is a great thread about this in tri talk....titled I had my first penalty this weekend, or something like that.

In a nut shell, You get 15" to pass, so do what you have to do, but the rule is 15".  Am I right here people?

Somebody in an earlier thread recommended wearing ear plugs for the swim. What are your recommendations?

I used earplugs at Racine but only b/c the lake temp was 54 degrees. Unless the water is that cold (and I don't think it'll be anywhere near that temp at Steelhead), I don't use them.

Thats pretty much what the USAT official said at the pre race meeting at Muncie a couple of weeks ago. If you don't complete your pass in 15, you have to drop back out of the draft zone. Not sure how your always going to be out of a draft with so many folks on the course.

mbmoran2 - 2008-07-29 9:50 AM I was on the run course yesterday.  There are changes vs. last year.  In summary, Less turns but more hills (actually one good one, which you get to repeat).  They took out the out-and-back while making the loop (we still do 2X) around Whirlpool's campus larger.   If I get a chance to BT-Route it, I'll post it here.  Like the bike, the last 2.5 miles will be fast (downhill to a flat finish).

Here's that run course.

...Whoah, that's weird.  I just "quoted" myself?!

Definitely take it easy through the first two miles and keep the HR down on that first hill at about 0.9 miles.  Get hydrated and prepare yourself mentally and physically (fluids, carbs).  Settle into your planned race pace miles 3-10.5.  The hill at mile 10.5 is your last major obstacle.  It doesn't look like much on the elevation profile, but you go up about 50ft in a tenth of a mile.  It's just after leaving Whirlpool and just before turning left onto M-63.  You also get to do this hill at about the 5.5 mile mark.

And because they start the faster waves last, there's a TON of passing. For most of the folks concerned, just sit in behind, pop out, pass, and get back in line.

The biggest concern, from my standpoint, is crossing the centerline. Being that you're at the back and wanting to get forward out of T1, it's gonna be 3-wide. Just be careful.

yes you have 15" to complete the pass or to fall back. once your front wheel is ahead of the rider you are passing that is a pass and he/she should fall back.

Main rules/tips to keep in mind: wear helmet anytime near your bike, pass on your left always, no corssing the middle yellow line, ride to your right  (unless passing) don't block (ride in the middle of the road), always look around before changing lanes, start a pass, drop back, etc. At feeding zones be careful, slow down, wathc out for fallen bottles and do not stop! you can do so ahead and once you verfied no one is behind you. As a courtesy sign any hazzards ahead of you to fellow athletes trialing behind you. oh and don't forget to smile lots, have fun and say thank you to volunteers/police/etc.

My wife's also doing the run leg on a relay team (#1371).  It will be her first exposure to triathlon.  Say "hi" but no using her as pace booty or I'll have to smack you all down.

I just hope I can find a few folks from BT on the run to say hi to.

Now for the important things. Is there a coffee maker at the BT house, or do I need to bring one? I need a cup of joe in the morning.
