Baowolf - 2009-05-24 3:11 PM Hehe I said I was going far, not that I was going fast....  My Fall HIM was 6:48:xx or some such, so just hoping to beat that.  This course should be a little more forgiving than the Las Vegas HIM and my training is a bit farther along so hopefully longer will = faster.  My swim isn't really any faster 2:00 /100 ish, my bike isn't really any faster 16.6-17.3 depending on hills, so the only place I will really improve is if I can maintain on the run with the better endurance this go around.  So 1-2 min faster pace on the run gives me an savings of 13-20 minutes probly so my guess is 6:30 or better.  Hopefully we get some hot days here to train in to get aclimated.  I haven't trained in anything over 85F yet so if Boise is mid 90s, that could be hurtful.

Even if you feel you are not going fast in your training, the amount of preparation you're doing is spooking me. I was feeling confident after feeling fresh after an Oly last week, but I am doing no where near the distances you are doing (except for the swimming which is easy for me). This will be my first 70.3 and am thankful that the run will be flat.

Y'all are spooking me!!!!  (tho this is my first HIM so I know you guys can be expected to have more base than I, but still!)

I am hopeful that by the time the run rolls around the sun will be cresting the horizon so will be a little forgiving overall as far as heat goes..... Just save me a beer at the finish, ya hear?   :-)

Since I'm not racing....I could organize a BT Get together if anyone is interested.

If everyone could post their travel plans, maybe we could get together for some beverages or a dinner somewhere. If you're interested, let me know when you'll arrive; how many in your party (specify if you need kid friendly locations), dinner or just drinks? food preference? It would be a shame to have all of you in one location and not meet in person. Let me know. jeff

I think it would be fun. Myself and my buddies don't drink, so a light dinner/lunch/whatever would be a hoot.

I think you need to be in Boise before 10 am Friday so you can attend an athelete race briefing.  On the web on like page 22 of the info it says you have to attend a briefing or be dropped from the race.  I don't know if they are serious about that, but it was in the info.  I am coming up a day earlier than planned just so I can attend a race briefing.  No idea why they don't have one later on Friday, but maybe it is so folks have to spend another day in town for the merchants.

I will be bringing the whole gang, wife and 5 kids.  I am not sure what my wife is going to do with them during the race though.  So I will be in town late Thursday through early Sunday as it is a 7-8 hour drive.

thanks for the heads up baowolf  -- i e-mailed the directors and got the following response:

Thank you for your interest in Ironman!  The athlete briefing is strongly encouraged, but not mandatory (it is mandatory for the physically challenged athletes).  If you cannot attend one of these meetings, please ask any inquiries at Athlete Check-in.

Phew that is cool.

It was a long read to find that fine print on page 22.  I already cleared the day off so I will probably not change my plans at this point and will be up there late Thursday, so if anything is happening.....

I will be tenting it so the only way to really reach me would be to call my cell.  I can meet up with folks after I check my bike in and find out where T1 and T2 are on Friday.  My only food preferences are that I am alergic to basil, so nothing that contains it.

As for finding me race day, hopefully my D3 uniform will show up before race day.  Otherwise I will be wearing what I have on in that picture to the left.   I am in the 2nd to last swim wave, so some of you will be coming out of the water before I go in.  After the race (like what 9pm) I will be wherever there is pizza and cold drinks are.  Anyone have a landmark for meeting up at?

OK-Sounds like Friday dinner/Happy Hour time-frame will work best. I'll start calling around town for eateries (no basil). NOW is the time to offer preferences...standard pasta, sushi, mediteranian...or maybe just a get together for apps and cocktails.

BTW: For those who are arriving early-I would be happy to show anyone around town, preview the course, etc.
I'll share my contact info when we get closer.

cool! it'll be fun to meet everyone.  This thing is coming up quick!!

I have a couple questions:

For which of you will this be your first HIM?  It will be mine!!

For those of you that live in Boise - can you give a run down of the bike course - how much elevation gain would you estimate for the whole course?

I'll be arriving sometime on Friday early afternoon...not sure where I'll be bunking yet.  Its my second 70.3.

Total elevation differential on the bike course is 400ft...

Ultrahip- This bike course is going to be no different than what you are used to here.... I think you'll be just fine!

What about the run course?  I know that is pretty flat, but a "GREENBELT?"  What does that mean?  Paved, gravel, trail?

I use to live in Boise and ran on the "Greenbelt" quite a bit. It is paved (asphalt or cement) for the most green belt and fairly smooth. Not to wide which will make things a bit congested. Most if not all the green belt is a flat and follows the Boise river.

~Food Preferances: Pasta!!!!!! doused with a serious dose of olive oil and cheese and I'm good to go :-)  Good thing about that is you can usually find it anywhere.

~First HIM.  Feeling a bit undertrained but ready.  Doing my last 4 hr. ride tomorrow.  Not worried about water temps, nor bike course as far as elevation and such.  Just freaking out about WIND on the bike.  Hills, there's always an end in sight, etc., but wind, just no way to know when it will ever end.

Oh, yeah, and I'm completely inept at changing a flat, so that could seriously add 30 minutes to my time if the unlikely happens.  ------->those that have ridden the course, what kind of shape is it in?  I'm used to pot hole, rock strewn roads here in Michigan.

I'm excited......looking forward to meeting up with y'all!!!

I rode the bike course saturday. Right out of the swim there is a nice downhill which leads to a very easy but long climb. Then there is another gradual downhill until you turn onto pleasant valley road which has a decent climb about a mile or so down. It's nothing to kill you but you will probably be in your granny gear. After that is some rollers that aren't too hard and then there is the Birds of Prey hill which I haven't biked due to it being a private road, but from what I've been told it will be another granny gear hill and it's not too long. Then there are some big rollers coming back down pleasant valley but if you pick up speed on the downhills the climbs are relatively easy. One final small gradual uphill down gowen road and then Federal Way is all gradual downhill for the last few miles into T2. SO overall there is a decent amount of hills but most of it isn't bad at all. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The run is flat. As in the only hills are crossing the bridges and running under the tunnels on the path. The entire path is paved with a decent amount of it new pavement and you can run in the grass on the side of the path for probably half of the way if you want.

Also this will be my first HIM.

Edit: The wind could negate everything I said and make the entire bike course suck hard. I'd put it at a 50/50 shot either way. When I rode it on saturday there was very little wind.

Glad to hear the run is paved. My Oly last weekend had a good portion of uneven dirt trail and it completely trashed my achilles/ calves. This will be my first HIM, and my only goal is to finish before the cutoff
