Expert 1484 | Subject: RE: IMCOZ following thread Wow, that was not the race I was expecting. Coming into the race I was thinking of B game for the swim, C game for the bike and left the rest for the run.... not quite what happened. I'm a solid 1:10hr IM swimmer in the 3 previous races. To pull out a 1:00.10 swim in the ocean with currents and no wetsuit (which I need since I start sinking from the hips) blows me away. Only things I can think of (if the course distance was really 2.4miles): I got some killer drafts (I really focused on hopping from fast feet to fast feet all swim), I wore a speed suit which I know makes me faster in the pool, the down current leg really helped. I can't say that I really noticed the current against us, but while in the water waiting for the start, if you just floated, you really started moving backward immediately. That was the most aggressive IM swim I have had. I got dunked under the second buoy (the current was pushing us into it), so I just went under water and popped out on the other side. Lots of getting crawled on top of for the first 1/3 or so, which has not happen before. 5:37 bike, I'm good with that given the winds on the course. I really focused on keeping my HR low, eating every 15mins (two Cliff Blocks), hydrating (switching between Gatoraide and water), and taking in electrolytes every hour. My whole plan for the bike was to "Bring my C game" and save it for the run. I keep track of the distance with wind, it was about 16 miles each loop. So a pretty stiff headwind, and then we turned east and road along the south end of the island it was a really stiff side wind. Lots of 17mph average there for me with my HR about 5bpm higher than on the rest of the course. Aide stations were spaced out great, all I ended up only using my areo bottle since I could refill at the next aide station right as I drained it. That was nice. I also figure the bike course was at least a mile long. My bike computer was right on with the course millage markers, and 112 was hit long before T2. I show it a bit over 113. I'd say on that course sans winds, easy 5hr bike split, it was flat flat flat and flat. Ok, one little hill on the south end but it was the wind that made you notice it. The run, that is something I want to forget. My first 6.25 miles was 8:13 pace. I was thinking of targeting 8:30, so I went out a bit fast. From there, things got bad. After the turn around by the finishing chute, both my lower back and quads totally locked up. Not with cramps, rather they were just locked up. Than made for a long and painful rest of the run. Lots of IM Shuffle action to the next aide station and then walking, and then walking to the next light post before running again kinda of stuff. Really disappointed with the run since I have spent a year working on it. My stand alone running times have come way down, and the HIM and last sprint I did I really knocked off time on the run in those races compared to my last efforts there. 5:43 T1, I'm good with that. There was a 200 meter distance between the swim exit mat and the fresh water showers. I was efficient in the changing tent, my bike was close to the tent too. So things went as fast as they good. I chose to not wear my Tri top and HR strap during the swim, wanted to avoid getting them salty and gritty. So I had to take some time putting those on. I normal wear both during the swim. 1:45 T2, I'm pleased with that. I did a cyclocross style dismount coming in, the guy there caught my bike even at that speed and I ran to the bags and tent. I swear the kid helping me in the tent was 5 or 6 years old, but he rocked and totally helped. Longest thing was putting my socks on, like T1 I was efficient and can not think of anything I could have done faster. Once back to our rental house, about 5 blocks from the finish. I sat in the roof top pool (which we have left cold) and got 2 litters of IV fluid and dinner. Good to have a nurse as a wife! Figure from here I'm going to focus on run work and look to do some HIMs next season. The wife and I are planning on doing the LA Marathon early next year, so that will be my early season focus. Put the swim and biking into maintain mode. |

Extreme Veteran 556 TX | Subject: RE: IMCOZ following thread Thanks for following folks! I second everything magic said. Swim was very fast, possibly currents (long section was with current), possibly short. Bike was brutal because we were all flying at first (without a ton of effort)... smooth roads and protected from the wind. Then you hit about a 10 mile section on the back of the island with chip seal surface and really strong winds where you watched your avg speed just start crashing. I think a lot of us may have tried to make up some of that and paid for it on the run (honestly, I know better... but it's hard to watch your 21 mph avg drop to 18! Perhaps that, perhaps just the end of what's been a very long (but fun) year, but I died pretty good on the run and had to do a ton of walking. Oh, and I also showed the bike as being about a mile long, just to add to the fun Time for more food and some sleep. Edited by PLMsbr 2009-11-29 10:43 PM |

Veteran 265 Puerto Aventuras | Subject: RE: IMCOZ following thread Congratulations to everyone!!! It was great to watch everyone and really respect the efforts made. This was the first IM I have seem in person and I am both excited about doing one but also understand first hand the effort and sacrifice needed for an IM. Very cool and impressive. I am a little hoarse from screaming and cheering. BTers should have some kind of sticker or sign so we know when to cheer even louder. The swim definitively looked fast on the long leg. I think it was down current and that helped. I liked the run in the middle of town as it brought out a lot of people and a lot of support. Great ambiance at the race and the weather helped... fairly cloudy and not very hot.
Again congratulations IRONMEN enoy some well deserved R&R in Cozumel!!

The Original 7834 Raleigh/Durham | Subject: RE: IMCOZ following thread Thanks to everyone for tracking us! It was a tough day out there for me and Jon. We both had bnike mechanical issues and there were zero mechanics on the course! My saddle was loose and I was able to make it to the 2nd aid station before it completely fell off. A nice lady gave me some of her old rusty bike tools to use. I waited and Jon passed me and stopped to fix it. I lost at least 30 mins to 40 mins dealing with this. We got the seat on but it wasn´t in the right positio it was farther back and tilted up. I just wanted to ride because I lost so time and was told mechanics would be at the next aid station so I just rode. I stopped at the next aid station and there wasn´t a mechanic so I said screw it and rode with it the way it was. It was really uncomfortable' my back and knees were KILLING me! Then Jon got a flat aftter the first loop' his tubular got a tear. BUt luckily ellasdad' ED was out there racing and stopped to help him fix it. So at that point all goals for us went out the window and we both just wanted to make the bike cut off. IT was a humbling day' the wind was a KILLER. But it was great meeting with trishie on the run and made the last lap fly by! So much fun!! Thanks trishie! |
