I wonder if the financial demographic plays in as well. I don't know the stats, but I'm assuming that wealthier people as a whole commit less violent crime so it would be logical that NFL players, who are generally pretty wealthy, fall into that category. Then throw in the roids, and head beating and maybe it drops down a notch to regular population numbers versus white color dudes. |

If you go down there you better just beware of a man named Leroy Brown. This Leroy Brown, is he a bad man? He was the baddest man in the whole damn town.....but then Tuwood got a gun, some mace, a knife, and carries them everywhere. Leroy Brown is rat forked if he decides to escalate. Not if we outlaw forks... but Leroy carries a 32 gun in his pocket for fun and has a razor in his shoe. Wonder if he's ever squared off with this Tony fellow, rumor has it he is baaaad too. Really really really forking bad.

Personally (and I do believe we need stricter gun control) I didn't think this incident was the best example to use, and therefore I was even a bit put off by Bob's editorial. As was mentioned earlier, this dude could have (and probably would have) taken her out with his bare hands. Guns sure do make it easier though. I still love Costas...he is not an idiot. One more thing, TriR, you seemed to imply this may have been an example of the NFL wanting to deflect attention away from head injuries, I disagree. I am pretty sure Costas has ultimate say in how he editorializes. Unfortunately, Belcher's brain likely can't be studied as that's where he shot himself. A lot of the other NFL suicides intentionally did it in their chests so their brains could be studied. It's all very sad. Oh my God. Do you people read what I write? I have NEVER once said that the NFL had ANY control over what Costas said. Never. I have said that I believe Costas has chosen (on his own) to deflect the attention away from the issues the NFL has. Those are two very different things. ETA: In my original posts I did say "Of course the NFL will do anything to move the focus away from the possible brain damage that the game is causing these players." Poor choice of words. I was talking about Costas then switched to the NFL. I can now see the confusion. While I do believe that to be true I can see how it could be confused that I thought Costas was working at the behest of the NFL. I think both the NFL and Costas want to deflect this away from the brain injury problems. But they are not colluding in their actions to do so. OK, is that clearer now? Clearer yes. But I don't think you're right. Costas was directly involved with the documentary "Head Games" which spotlights the problem of concussions and traumatic brain injury among pro and amateur athletes. On the contrary, I think brain injuries among athletes is an issue that's important to him and not something that he'd deliberately try to deflect attention from. Here's a link to the movie: http://www.fandango.com/headgames_157781/movieoverview I think he was just, pardon the expression, shooting his mouth off. I don't think there's any ulterior motive by either Costas or the NFL. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() KeriKadi - 2012-12-03 7:01 AM I can agree that we need qualifications or permits, but this is clearly about an individual and his actions. The person is Casper, Wyo used a bow or crossbow. Should there be a bow control? This is about his mental health. How do we keep missing the signs that these people are going to go crazy? iDK, but I don't think someone wakes up one day and just decides to take a life.So those of you who are pro guns - do you not think there is a connection to more guns = more gun deaths? It seems to me compared to a lot of other countries we have more guns and also more murders, mass murders etc. Of course you can kill a person a lot of different ways but guns are so easy - it is pulling a trigger. I agree it is the person who pulls the trigger but allowing them to get guns so easy is part of the problem IMO. I am not against all guns for all people but do think it should be MUCH more difficult to get a gun. I could go out today and get a gun and I am in no way qualified to own a gun. Just because you are an American and it is a right does not mean you should be allowed. Easier to get a gun than a drivers license. People should have to take tests, longer waiting period etc.

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I support gun control, exhale, fire, breathe in, exhale, fire, breathe in, repeat. Make sure to clean and oil them on a regular basis so I guess I support gun maintenance also. Gun control is not the fix. I don't need to repeat what others have said in depth, lets ban cars, alachol, BBQ for that matter. No ones ever killed a person with a car in a fit of rage, right? Humans, we are awesome, and at times, we suck....inanimate objects are just a tool, used by humans, don't have a gun, use an axe, don't have an axe, use a knife, hammer, bat, pills, car, fire, so on and so on till we club each other like cave men. People are the problem. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() A gun makes killing easy. It is a constitutional right to own one, and I am okay with that. But to act like people would kill with their hands just as casually as they pull a trigger is not correct. I think Costas is an idiot also for saying what he said as guns are not going away. But I do believe what he said is true. The dude would not have killed his wife if he didnt have the gun. |

The data in the report from Virginia I posted earlier does not bear this out... at least in the case of aggravated battery. While the percentage of those crimes committed with guns increased, the overall rate did not. In other words, people who will commit aggravated battery do not do so because a gun is available. It is more likely that if this dude did not have a gun... he would have beat her to death. The gun is one (of many) means to an end. If you remove the gun, there are other means. |

Regardless of his past actions. If you read the beginning part of his speech (the perspective part) you actually think he might address the underlying issues that pro athletes have (damaged bodies and brains or even drug or alcohol abuse, maybe even domestic violence.) Then he starts quoting Whitlock and goes off tangent. I 100% believe that he's deflecting. Maybe it's just his own warped sense of morality but he's disproving the first part of his argument by spewing this anti-gun rhetoric. "You want some actual perspective on this?" Costas said. Yes Bob. Some actual perspective. Not a strawman about if the gun wasn't there it would not have happened. |

![]() jmk-brooklyn - 2012-12-03 1:26 PM What do you think the NFL reaction would have been if Costas had gone off about domestic violence and alcoholism instead of guns?
It would depend on what he said and how he said it. If Costas would have said his actions were due to the drug and alochol abuse combined with brain trauma and the NFL's blatent lack of policies and uncaring attitude towards their players, he probably wouldn't be see or heard from as much during NFL games. |

I'll give ya some perspective on this... This just proves my rantings all season long. NBC absolutely sucks at covering football games. Those three dopes that do the pregame are a joke. Dungy looks like he walked in off the street and doesn't know what is going on every time, the other guy is constantly picking fights with Dungy for no apparent reason. Then we have to listen to Faith Hill to start the game, BOO! Then we have Costas give his opinion on guns. The only ray of sunshine is Collins and Michaels. Would rather have Sunday night football on CBS or FOX. |
