Subject: RE: SBR Utopia ---- Permanently OPEN!!
And my seemingly-bad-news-that-is-really-good-news is that I have officially pulled the plug on Ironman Mont Tremblant. My Beautiful Bride has had a heck of a time recovering from a freak ankle injury she suffered when she took a tumble in a trail race back in January (racing another trail HM on it a week later really didn't help) and over the past couple of weeks she has finally come to grips with the fact that it is going to be a long haul to get it back right - it has been her primary focus the entire time and she is doing everything she is supposed to do, and it is coming around, albeit slowly. So with her out I really did not have enough motivation to stay in (although having the opportunity to race with Fred, Jim and Bobby was no small incentive!). It never was going to be an 'A' race for me and instead this year is about getting some speed back after 4 years of IM focus. So I have pivoted the season a good bit and currently have 9 more races on the calendar between now and the end of September, mostly all Olympic and sprint distance races, but also including a couple of very climby timed centuries.

The current long-term tentative plan is to get through this season by racing myself faster all-around, then go bike-focus through next season and probably bookend the summer with Leadman 125 at the beginning and maybe Leadman 250 at the end. Then aim squarely at IM again in the 2016 season (that will be he summer I turn 50). I may shift all that back a year however due to long-term work schedule. I already know from previous experience that summer of 2016 through spring of 2017 will be an EXTREMELY busy time at work: that is our next scheduled accreditation year and I carry the lion's share of the administrative load for that effort. I am seriously contemplating stepping away from full-time employment immediately following that (retirement?!?) so summer of '17 or even '18 as my next Ironman season might make more sense.

Good lord, I cannot believe I am scheduling my life that far in advance!!! Anybody else that far out or am I just crazy?

Rusty, sorry to hear that things weren't recovering well enough for the IM to happen for your wife.

Sounds like you still have a heck of a season planned though!  To answer your last question about planning that far in advance.  Hell no!   I struggle with what I will do next week.

Rusty, sorry you won't be racing with us in M-T.  Hope your wife gets the ankle figured out.  Like you, I do tend to plan/contemplate racing things (at least in a general sense) several years in advance.  I still have a sub 2:50 marathon goal that I want to tackle and keep putting that on the back burner until I get some Ironman goals accomplished so I'm always thinking several years out on the marathon front.  I have never been able to race at Lake Placid because I always have a work-related meeting that same week every year.  We will be altering our meeting schedule in 2016 so now racing Placid after that is entering my mind.  My mind's wheels are always churning away....

Nice running, riding, swimming and RACING all!  Quite the past week here on SBR Utopia.

I'm sidelined again, this time with a knee (other side from the hamstring).  Snakebit...

Good news is I can swim without aggravating it, so can keep that steady.  Going to try a sooper easy bike spin later and see if the motion is OK, but I suspect I'll be taking Marc's good advice and aqua jogging after my swims…  Setting a time with the orthopod, too.

So close to the start of the season.

Matt

Well, focus on that good news! And yes, aqua jogging is a fantastic idea! Hang in there and train the things you can with as much enthusiasm as you would normally. You will be back in no time.

TBT is super convenient, but the problem is that it results in a less than optimal taper (especially for someone who owns only one bike....n+1, I know).  So I think I'm going to forego the convenience and just pack my own bag....which brings me to my question.

What's your strategy for taper?  Lower the volume, but keep the intensity?  Lower volume and intensity?  I'm asking mostly about the bike, as all of my running is kept easy, so I have an idea of what I'll do for that.  And swimming....last year worked out pretty well with keeping volume and intensity until the week of the race and then dropping back a bit, so I'll probably do something similar again.

It can't be said enough. Lower the volume, keep some intensity. X-whatever

Aw Rusty, sorry to hear that BUUUUT ya know, dropping a B (or C or whatever) race is no biggie! It sounds like you have a really good plan for your season.

I plan reasonably far out but not THAT far. I'm impressed!

Healing thoughts for the wifey!

Race planning here. And getting nerdy.

I like to start slow. Especially in a marathon. But the course has a downhill start, notably in the first mile.

Do I translate slow to, slow relative to the hill and still go a little under goal pace? (because the uphills later will definitely be slower than goal pace)

I don't want to get carried away but there is no such thing as perfectly consistent miles with dramatic ups and downs.

I would worry less about the pace and more the intensity.  Start at the intensity you planned for, and if that nets you a faster section than goal pace then great, but I wouldn't purposely try to run that section harder unless it is part of the overall plan.

Positive thoughts for the wife Rusty - I'm envious of your ability to change direction and put a positive spin on it.  As for planning ahead, I don't know what I'm eating for dinner tonight, so that tells you how well I plan things...

Oh yes, an excellent point. I am hugely rpe-oriented. I was just hoping to establish a few time checks along the course and need to factor some of this stuff in.

I had a nice (although why does it rain every time I ride?) ride this am.

2 hours with 10x5' at threshold.

Overall held a NP of about 270 for the ride.

Getting there....

30-35 more watts and you can ride like Ben.  Unless of course Ben has kicked it up since the winter...LOL.

Man, gotta share this somewhere. This morning we went out to Slidell for a swamp tour, were driving the bike course on the way back. Came upon an accident scene, firetruck and a couple cruisers. Then saw the bikes. And the body. Lying in the middle if the road, bibs, jersey pulled away, lying in an unnatural position, bloodied face. Clearly dead. Not sure why he was uncovered. I have never seen a dead body other than my dad in the funeral home, and definitely never a dead cyclist. I am really shook up by this, I forget about it but then keeps popping back into my head.....can't seem to unsee that .

On top of that Tri bike transport sent my gear bag to Florida. Trying to get it to me overnite via usps, but an added stressor no doubt. If it doesn't come by 3 I'll be scrambling for helmet and shoes and Tri kit

I read about this on ST....and saw your post on there.  Can't believe it!  So shtty.

It's not the same, but I saw an SUV pull out of an intersection as a triathlete (in a race) was coming down a slight decline at probably 25 mph and just crushed into the SUV.  I was a couple miles into the run and it really shook me up....kept seeing it over and over in my mind.  I'm pretty sure the guy came out okay in the end (definitely did not finish the race....for sure ended up in the hospital).  It's a sobering reminder that you have to keep your guard up at all times....whether it's on a nice, wide road, or in a "controlled" race situation.

Hope TBT gets your stuff to you in time!  Enjoy your mini vacation and race, Chris!

The swim is ALWAYS a cause for concern when it comes to competing in a triathlon. This is the event for which you need to concentrate on RELAXING.
