I agree nothing new on race day. Blog by Jessie was quite interesting as oatmeal is a big pre race meal I read about over and over in Race Reports...thanks for sharing that Kelly.

What is everyone doing today?

I have 4 hour bike, need to make progress with packing, changing tires, finalize bike accessories checking things out in ride today.

Officialy QT2 pre-race meal (for everyone) is unsweetened applesauce mixed with whey protein powder and a banana.  I get to eat almost 4 cups of it before IMFL.

When I opened up BT this morning the leading picture was of Daniel, Kathy and Aquagirl.  Sweet!

I am still stuck on what to wear during the bike.  I know what my kit will be but unsure of any extra clothes.  I hate cold and I figure it won't be much more than 50 - 55 when we start off right?   Back in my marathon days I'd go to the thrift store and buy some stuff so I could toss along the course.  Might have to do that.  I'd rather have extra clothes on that I can toss versus freezing on the bike.

enjoy

Not that great of a picture but here I am with my tri kit on.  Sure wish I had one of your bikes but this one got me through all the long rides so she deserves to finish an Ironman!

Happy Tuesday.

Today I just had a power hour on the bike trainer...felt soooo good...rocked out to my IPOD.

My coach is telling me to stay away from all the pre-race stuff.  He said I get 30 minutes at the expo aside from my bag drop offs etc.  I would like to join up to swim if you guys swim as a group?

My very serious Ironman goal is to know, without a doubt, that I took the bike waaay too easy by mile 15 of the run.  If that bike takes me less than 6:30 I failed. If its very windy and I get off the bike in less than 7 I will be mad at myself.  If I am still running at mile 20 and feel ok I will be so very proud of myself for sticking to my goal:  to finish.  JUST to finish.

OK so the hurricane is freaking me out...I know it wont hit florida but I am thinking it could create seriously yucky waves and wind for us on race day.  What is mild everywhere else, to me, on raceday could be really tough.  3-5 foot swells and a 15-20 MPH wind on the bike and I will be really in for a tough day.  I am already mentally visualizing it.  Telling myself that IS how it will be and to know I am ready.

Food on the bike:  I am sticking to what I practiced.  Its not perfect science but routine.  Same for the run.  practiced over and over again.  I wouldnt dare change or add anything new after my nutrition blow up in Augusta.  Boy did I learn from that!

Last subject but a new one:  does anyone else secretly think about what they will do when they cross the finish line?  I know some people are really superstitious but my coach corrects me every time I say "if" I finish.  so I am allowing myself to visualize it.  does anyone else have a finish line plan?  lol

I have visualized it for a year now. I know there are a lot of factors beyond my control, but I like to put positive images in my mind. One of those images is me crossing the finish line and hearing, "John Turner, you ARE an IRONMAN".

I have no idea how I will react, but I have faced that same situation hundreds of times in my mind.

Yep going to the dinner, hope to see everyone there. I will send my info..This is my first ironman and will be coming alone.  Did a 4hr ride in 50 degree weather and windy conditions today,  did great compared to my prior rides. Wore winter compression tights , long sleeve shirt, and regular bike shorts and jersey. Stayed comfy the whole ride. Changed saddle saturday and was worried about the change...But it worked, old seat: stop every hour and sore, in aero 50%, New seat: no stops, no soreness, in aero 85%..ahhhh! Hope everyone's as pumped as I am..take care...see yall in a few days. IMFL here I come!!!

Learnt some lessons this weekend about soild food in take on the bike and not a big fan so I might do these minis PB&J should be easy 120 cals per little sandwitch

I've been using the Power Bar - Pure and Simple Energy Bars (Roasted Peanut Butter). Easy to carry, easy to chew up. Tried a few other bars and these work best for me, some bars I felt like I was choking trying to drink it down was taking to much effort.

May toss a PBJ in the SN bag.

I have been living on uncrustables this entire summer for all my rides. Keep them frozen and by the time eat them they are defrosted and great!

If you haven't used them (repeatedly) in training and haven't run off of long bikes while using them I would be really cautious about using them on race day.  Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on wheat sandwich minis (or whatever that package is) have both fat and fiber -- both of which can cause serious GI issues especially on the run.  In addition if you overcook, which there is definitely a propensity to do, especially at Florida, you're shut down your GI system.  That's bad enough as it is, but its even worse if you have fat and fiber sitting in your stomach.

Putting aside the fact that you haven't used these in training, here's an interesting article about the perils of using fat and fiber generally (and peanutbutter and oatmeal in particular) as race day foods: http://kropelnicki.com/?p=146

Or you can do everything absolutely IDENTICAL to how you trained and still end up in every porta potty on race day...as I can attest to having done that TWICE.

So, it's really all a crap shoot...

So people dont' have to trudge thru all the pages, I believe we agreed on a swim meet up thursday morning 7:30ish on the boardwalk behind boardwalk beach hotel.  We can discuss some lunch plans then.  I will wear my BLUE BT IMFL shirt from 2008.  It has the BT logo on the front and IMFL stuff on the back.  I will have a blue under armour hoodie on if its cold

I gotta disagree with you on that.  If you execute properly (e.g. keep your HR and intesnity low enough to allow for digestion) you're not going to have GI problems.  You're correct if you do everything the same as in training but blow out the swim and bike you're going to have GI issues, but that's an over pacing problem, not a nutrition problem.

Well, I can honestly tell you I didn't overpace my swim or bike in either of my Ironmans and I still was hitting every porta potty on the run course.  It happens.

I know we are still a few days away from IMFL 2011, but I did want to take time to thank everyone for posting all the great advice in this thread. A special thanks goes to Kathy and Socks for all their insight.

Many of us, including myself, are first-timers with this race and this distance. I can tell you that I have tried to absorb every bit of information that everyone has posted and I feel much better prepared due to all the great information I have received from all of you.

Last 2 years I went by the Super Walmart on Front St and picked up some toss away stuff (for less than 10 bucks a piece) - it was so inexpensive I got several for a couple of other races I had planned for later in the year - as it turns out I still have enough for this race as well.

I had my best long ride in years today!!!

4 hours...my power graph is a beautiful thing.

Last couple years my cycling has been a disappointment to me and worse than back in 2007....so nice to be seeing solid gains over last 2 weeks.

I use Perpetuem in half my bottles and HEED in half. On some longer races I get to the point that I cannot stand anything but water for a bottle so I also put a bar or three in my pockets. Plan B.

Glad to see there are others racing with a road bike.  Me too......Gotta do it, as she has been with me from the beginning.....
