Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by jmkizer Originally posted by StaceyK Hi Everyone A bit of a proof of life post from me. I have been struggling a little bit lately with everything. It happens for me every year when the sun disappears. So I am attempting to make a few changes to make things better. The first one is that I and a couple of other girls from the office are walking around the block at lunchtime. This gets us out in the sun shine for about 30 minutes each time we go and so it is helping to lift my mood. I feel you, Stacey! For me, the being outside is the key. The sun sure helps but if I do something like take spin classes, that doesn't help as much as getting outside. I am also looking at sourcing an alarm clock that simulates the sunrise to wake you up (not sure that Phil will appreciate that but too bad). I know that Kirsten has a light that she uses with good success. The second is that I am letting some of my race challenges go. This means that I have decided that the 2018km in 2018 challenge that mum signed me up for is not something that I am going to worry about. If it happens it happens if it doesn't then it isn't a big deal at all. I have also decided that I am going to sign up for the 10k runs with the winter trail series rather than the HMs. This takes some pressure of and will let me just enjoy running these great events with some great people. S from work is joining Mum and E and I. So that makes my two main goals breaking 2:30 at the September half and 6:00 at the October Marathon. Everything else is just great events that I get to enjoy with great people. Maybe its all psychological but this morning I managed to get dressed and go for a run in the dark and actually enjoyed doing it, or maybe taking the pressure off myself has helped. Being honest there is a nagging part of my brain that is telling me that I am soft and have taken the easy way out, but hopefully that will shut up eventually. I think that doing the 10ks is a good idea. I mean, we do this for fun and if this sounds like more fun to you, then do it! After all, every single race can't be your A race, right? It sounds like your half in September and your full in October are your A races, correct? You can always decide to use the 10ks for speedwork to help support your time goals in your other events -- or else do them as "catered training days." I use the catered training days approach on bike rides sometimes.
It all sounds like you've thought it out. In no way are you 'giving up'. This training and racing should be fun! It's a hobby - it's great it keeps us healthy but its only a part of our lives. It can be a tricky balance when your brain is telling you such mean things. Anyway, i am in a similar zone of life where i have to just find a way to be okay with what i can do and accept 'something is better than nothing' and 'good enough' is good enough - We're in for the long haul right? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Please keep Robin P in your thoughts. It sounds like areas near Lake Lure, where she lives, are being evacuated. As of yesterday, she was safe. Let's hope she stays that way! The river gauge along the Rocky Broad River at Bat Cave was 8.44 feet. Moderate flood stage is 8.5 feet. At 8 feet, homes and campgrounds along the Rocky Broad River begin to flood. At 10 feet, Highway 64 is closed and evacuations begin in the Lake Lure area. Lake Lure is raising the dam gates to 30 feet and are asking residents along the river to move to higher ground immediately. (Source: http://wlos.com/news/local/flooding-rampant-in-wnc) It looks like they are predicting that it will crest at 9.4 feet. |

Last day of work for the year! Let the 62 day weekend commence at 3:00 p.m. EST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But then again to have a summer break like that I would have to work with children and the end result of me doing that would be a permenant break either in the mental health unit or in jail. It's bad enough working with teachers ![]() |

When we were there in December 2007 we sent a parcel of stuff home to ourselves - we still haven't received it over a decade later. Thankfully it wasn't stuff we really needed. Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Still better than the mail here. I once got something over a year late. With "speed post" (which costs about $10 a letter), if you are lucky, maybe two to three weeks to/from the US. Regular mail is usually 1-3 months. Down to 5 1/2 days for the kids here (they are counting, and so am I!) and seven for me, counting today! Then moving madness for a week. Arrrrgh! Over the years, I've come to realize that what I really like to do is train, and do a couple of longer races a year that I take a lot of time building up to. Sprints don't really motivate me. It's not that they're too "easy", but the opposite. That level of intensity leaves me feeling sick for the rest of the day, and I just don't find them as satisfying as a longer event. Plus I'm at a disadvantage in transition as am too slow and spacey. I really think my body and mind are just more suited to longer stuff, and by definition one can't do a ton of those every year. The occasional Oly is short enough for me. I'd really like to do some longer OWS events (like 3-5K) as well if I could find them. I know that even though I'm a good swimmer by AG tri standards, I'm nobody by swimmer standards. I'd get my butt kicked, probably by women in their 60's and 70's, but whatever! Part of my training really has to be outdoors, or I'm just not motivated. Here, that's mostly running. Looking forward to doing more outdoor biking and swimming back in the US. I agree, Stacy, winters suck. Hopefully the light and getting outdoors will help. I am really not looking forward to next winter in Idaho. Hoping we can successfully relocate to somewhere where we don't have to deal with winter. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Okay, everyone can be jealous because I am going to be off for at least the next 400 days (??) as am taking a gap year. But if you saw the list of things to do that await me during that time, you might NOT be jealous. Most are financial, logistical, moving, or real-estate related and I am utterly unqualified to even know where/how to start. I need a book called "Adult Life for Dummies". I've spent pretty much my entire adult working life overseas and in those situations, your employer usually takes care of a lot of the nitty-gritty. The last time I moved back to the US, I had to ask someone how to get cable, and relearn how to fill my own gas tank! The only nice thing is that while there are some deadlines, very few of these things have to be done at any specific time, so fitting in training shouldn't be a problem.....thus the Ironman. |

Randee, In my defense, we went to a friend's house last night and didn't get home until after 1 a.m. I haven't seen that side of midnight for a looong time. Also, I took a 2nd nap after my trainer ride. LOLOL |

This was our first week off and I need a vacation from my vacation already! We're putting our house on the market so we can downsize. It's exhausting. We leave for a week long vacation in Boston tomorrow and I'm so not ready. |
