Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Happy Sunday afternoon Manatees! I have a bike tech. question, so if that is your forte, please chime in. Also, please note: I am ridiculously clueless with regards to anything technical. I only know what I wrote below because I can google. ![]() I ride a 2010 Felt B16. It has Shimano 105 components (10 speed) including an FSA chainring, 175mm, with 53/39T setup. The rear derailleur is a short cage, and the spec sheet online says the rear cassette is 11-25T. I find too often that I wish I had another gear when climbing. On yesterday's ride, I found myself grinding it out at low RPM and 250+ watts on too many climbs. I stopped at my LBS on my way home to drop my bike off for her annual 'tune' but also asked them about different options for gearing. They claim I have an 11-23T rear cassette and that my only option would be to upgrade it to either an 11-25T or a 12-25T and that the bike wouldn't allow for an 27T cassette without changing the derailleur. In reading online, the Shimano 105 short cage derailleur has either 29 or 33 teeth (I can't fine a definitive answer on which) and that if I subtract the difference in teeth from my front crankset and the difference in my rear cassette, as long as that number is less than 29 OR 33, I should be able to make the switch. I'd like an 11-27T or 12-27T if possible. That should be doable, right, even if the short cage derailleur only has space for 29? Also, I RARELY ride my hardest gear. If I went from the 11 teeth sprocket to the 12 to make sure I have enough room on the derailleur, would I potentially regret it? Edited by glfprncs 2018-06-03 3:41 PM |

If it's 23, the biggest cassette will have 23 teeth, etc. What kind of crank do you have? A compact (50/34) or mid compact (52/36), this will also make a difference. For me, I'd want a 11/27 or so cassette but that's just me. Edited by jmkizer 2018-06-04 9:02 AM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yesterday morning, Adam and I (along with a whole slew of other members of our tri club) volunteered at Bike Aid Station #2 at Ironman Raleigh. It was nice to catch up with a fellow Manatee while supporting the event. I promised information about aid station offerings, this is what we had:
My tri club has always done Bike #2 and my bike club has always done Bike #1. This year, whoever was supposed to handle Bike #3 dropped the ball. My tri club handled Bike #3 as well. And then we found out that they needed more volunteers on the run course so we handled run aid station 2! Crazy! |

Good thing your tri club was there or there may have been a lot of angry racers Did anyone take (on purpose) the salted watermelon blok? It sounds yucky to me, but anything watermelon does, so maybe i'm not the best judge ! |

To me, the salted watermelon just tastes like a mild version of watermelon Jolly Rancher. I don't know that they had trouble getting volunteers so much as problems with the station captains getting the word out. When our club president said, "You need to be doing this." We were pretty compliant. What makes it more impressive to me is that we had a whole lot of club members racing. We had 75+ people at the bike aid stations plus people at the run aid station. Plus people safety boating, etc. That means that almost everyone was racing or volunteering. WOW! |

I only know what I wrote below because I can google. ![]() I did some calculations based on what I found from ABI. A 12-27 would be fine, and 27 is as big as you can go. I don't think a 11 vs 12 tooth rear is going to affect you, since you rarely use the highest gear ratio, and probably don't "spin out" on it. An 11-27 won't work with your FSA chainring, although if you wanted to get nuts I guess you could start shrinking the chainrings up front. I'm guessing that is not in your wishlist though. A Shimano 105 12-27 cassette is available from REI for about $50. Please note that I consulted the Internet on some of this, so use at your own risk Edited by cdban66 2018-06-04 11:37 AM (ABI Cassette.jpg) (Cassette Calc.jpg) Attachments ---------------- ABI Cassette.jpg (77KB - 2 downloads) Cassette Calc.jpg (37KB - 2 downloads) |

I really enjoyed talking with you and peppering you with triathlon questions. i definitely got my mentee time in. It was more fun than I expected, had a great sense of community, and I found it inspiring to see so many athletes getting it done out there. I'm really bummed IM is not hosting in Raleigh again next year and still haven't really heard why. My impression was like yours - getting volunteers didn't sound like the problem. It was more that some group called dibs on staffing the aid station then failed to promote it enough within their group. Our Tri club is pretty large and went from calling from volunteers for aid station 2 to filling it, station 3, plus a run station all within a couple of days. I'm not sure what food people took either, but there were a ton of gels and bananas left over. One perk of volunteering is that I probably brought home $20 worth of gels as they hand literally hundreds left over and seemingly couldn't give them away. |

I super appreciate aid stations and volunteers, but I can't think of one time I've taken a gel because I only like a few flavors (chocolate/mint chocolate, pineapple, peanut butter) and they are never the ones at the aid stations. Most popular flavors (like berry, vanilla, lemon lime) make me literally gag or nauseous so I just always carry my own. Watermelon flavored anything is a huge NO GO for me. I do not love fruit when running, and bananas especially make me gag. I also cannot eat pretzels which are at most aid stations (Celiac) so out of luck there. A lot of people question why I carry all of my own run nutrition and that's why! I would rather carry all my gels than dry heave or bonk LOL! |

Mostly because by bringing my own I know (a) that it'll taste good to me, (b) what effect it'll have on me, and (c) no need to worry about supply etc. In a full IM, it might not be possible, but I prefer just buying what I like and bringing it to finding out what each race provides (which isn't always easy with local races) and then buying and testing those. I'm with you - some of those fruit gels I've tried are disgusting! On the other hand, anything mocha/coffee/chocolate flavored with caffeine is usually right up my alley. Having said this, I have taken gels on the course before, but I pocketed those and tried them later during training ![]() |

On the bike i can eat anything, but it better be processed before i start running b/c i do not do well with any type of nutrition running! Gels and the like are the worst for me. I started to use UCANN for that reason. So far so good, but i haven't had a long bike, long brick run test to make sure. I agree with you on the watermelon flavor - i do not likey at all!! |

If I someone lose your nutrition, I want to for the on course offerings to at least be a safety net. |
