What do others train/race in for running shoes?
I train in what I race in. Asics Kayano 17... hopefully they don't change them again, or I should just get a new pair now because they changed my other asics to a narrower heel and I had to upgrade to this shoe. Gonna try the 18's but we will see. I don't like to change things up during race season when I've been training on something specific Asics nimbus 13 - already have the extra pair, train and race in same shoe model, I too am afraid to mix it up. I've never heard of or owned cycling socks. I'll bike without socks and put on running socks for marathon. I went without socks in my Olympic, but I'll run with socks at my IM practice HIM race next month. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() No sock for the bike socks for the run. Still debating on Calf Guards or not during the bike & run. I train in Nike Air Pegusas 28's love them have an extra pair set aside for Placid. I am alos toying with K-Swiss Qwicky blade lights they are very nice but don't have the cushion the Nike's have.

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() I get blisters if I don't wear socks on the bike. I will be doing running socks on the bike and run. Am I the only one who uses Saucony? hurricane 13's. Great shoe with lots of cushion and support for an over pronator like myself. I have a pair of Asics DS Trainers that i like to use for shorter races as they are lightweight but still have support but I am unsure still if I want to go a whole marathon without the extra cushioning. |

Adidas with Aloe. They are very thin and cool my feet! For me no socks on the bike is a no brainer. Tri shoes are made to go sockless. Also with wet feet from the swim socks are awful to put on correctly, next thing is I sweat a ton and my socks become flooded on the bike. Lets no forget this is Lake Placid and who knows if it will rain or not. With that being said putting 1 pair of socks on for the run is plenty for me!!! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I don't wear socks on the bike either. I used to, my first couple of seasons doing Tri's. Then, I realized that so many people didn't and I was having trouble getting socks on my wet feet (from the swim) that I decided to try it, too. I liked it ALOT better. My feet just feel more comfortable and "aired out" so to speak.....lol. I do wear Tri shoes (Pearl Izumi Tri Fly) on the bike; which are actually made to be worn without socks. I know some people wear actual cycling shoes (which are probably not made to be worn without socks). I also feel less "restricted". I was having problems with my feet going numb on long rides and going sockless made a huge difference there, too. I do wear them if it's really cold, but feel SO much better without them! |

I too train in the Kinvara's and have raced up to 1/2 mary's in them. Not sure how my feet would enjoy them for anything longer so for LP I will run in my tried and true Saucony Paramounts. As for the sock question- YES for both for this guy. I've got terrible circulation issues in my toes and unless it is eighty degrees out will be wearing lightweight wool socks for the bike. For the run I will probably take the time to throw on some compression socks. I'm out there simply to finish this race, a couple extra minutes in T2 doesnt really faze me. |

I train with Saucony Kinvara but probably switch to Brooks Ghost for longer runs and race itself. I guess maybe I am, depending on how you define "minimalist," of course. I wear nike frees for all of my training and race distances of HM and above. Racing 10k and under I wear flats. Last year I wore frees at IMLP and felt great from beginning to end of the marathon - zero issues, and feet/ankles/knees felt great the next day. I don't really have a position one way or another on minimalist running, other than to say it is clear that there are a wide range of options out there and you just have to try a lot of things to see what works for you personally. I actually started wearing frees for running sort of by accident 3 years ago - I had a pair that I used just to knock around in and found myself with an unexpected opportunity to run while overseas. I didn't have a pair of "running" shoes with me, so I just used the frees, and they were dreamy. I should mention that I probably spend more time in stocking feet than I do in shoes, and have my whole life. Again, not because I am a barefoot zealot, but more simply because I grew up as a redneck kid in Alabama! |

I train with Saucony Kinvara but probably switch to Brooks Ghost for longer runs and race itself. I've been running recently in a pair of Newton MV2, which aren't really minimalist shoes, but they are 0-drop 'natural' shoes. They take a bit to get used to but I'm really starting to like them. I do wear other barefoot shoes regularly(VFFs/Vivobarefoot), but I'm not at the point that I could run any real distance in them(>3miles), and at this point in my training I'm not going to attempt it. I've been dealing with a minor bout of plantar fasciitis(which I think I finally got over) and don't want to risk anything. |

No socks for bike - wouldn't wanna pee on my socks! Side note, ran in warmer weather than usual yesterday and boy did it wipe me out! 9 miler at regular pace and I was sore and tight all day. Remember to stay hydrated during the day so that when we're training we don't start dehydrated.

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Introducing myself - IMLP will be my first full Iron distance. I've done some sprints, olympics and a half iron last year - so my primary goal is to just finish. Last year a friend and I volunteered to help secure a spot for this year. Took the opportunity to ride the bike course a couple times - and I have to admit, my biggest fear is accidentally overdoing it on the bike (due to the hills) and falling flat on my face during the run. Can't wait - hard to believe it's only 3 short months away! Even back in January when I started the 24 week countdown, it seemed an eternity! |

On the flip side you don't want to accidentally take it too easy on the bike either. I am not sure if you have a coach or are using an online training guide but make sure you know your zones. Zone 2 is your BFF on the bike. Whether it's with power or HR, find it. Caress it. Know it. Then there will be no accidents and falling apart on the run. Should you bike within yourself and fall flat on the run it was simply too much for you to handle. You don't have any training logs so I cannot tell how 'hard' you are training, even if you had logs I really wouldn't know, but you do. Don't think of negative things, they will bring you down faster and harder. You'll finish, and hear those awesome words... You are an Ironman |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I finally had some luck with my nutrition on the bike this past weekend and feel that about 250-280 calories per hour did me good. Do I aim for the same amount on the run? In my marathons I normally use Gu gels. By the time I'm done with the marathon my stomach doesn't feel so hot. What kind of nutrition will you guys use on the run? When you are doing the running portion of the IM is it better to take in more sport drink than gels for calories? I suppose this can be different for everyone. I'm thinking I will practice with banannas and the bonk breakers since they are on the course, plus a gu here and there. I will take in water with perform too. |

I've never heard of or owned cycling socks. I'll bike without socks and put on running socks for marathon. I went without socks in my Olympic, but I'll run with socks at my IM practice HIM race next month. I started with Asics Nimbus. Then I switched to the DS Trainer and Speedstars after I kept getting injured in the Nimbus. That was almost five years ago, and none of the running injuries I had with the Nimbus have returned to date. Nimbus is latin for: Marshallow Padded Brick. Check your front lawn for a span of about 40 yards to make sure there is no sharp rocks or sticks. Then run back and forth barefoot. Pay close attention to how and where your foot lands and rolls. Is this how it's hitting and rolling in your Running shoe? If the answer is "No" you're in trouble and you're going to get injured eventually while running, especially once you start increasing to higher volume. You need cushioining in a shoe, YES! But you NEED to feel the road beneath you so your brain can provide the proper biofeedback so you can run with your natural God-given gait. Also, a shoe where you can feel the terrain below means you are strengthening the fascia of your foot and all the tiny muscles and ligaments. The human foot has more bones per square inch then anywhere else in your body. It is a genius, miracle work of divine engineering. It's evolved over millenia. Don't buy an overbuilt shoe and let some hack scientist determine how you should run. You ever shake someone's hands who works heavy labor. Their grip is deadly. But you look at the hand and you visibly cannot see any muscles or reason for this. Same thing with the foot. If the same man who works heavy labor worked with soft, cushy mittons how strong would his handshake be? Not nearly as powerful. When you develop the strength of your foot and land natural (mid-strike) your foot becomes strong and it propels you forward and stabilizes your legs as to not stress your IT Band and Patella and other myriad of parts of your body north of the foot. Unless you are overweight, have medically defined 'high arches' or 'flat feet' ... you should be running (slowly and carefully transitioning) from 13 oz+ trainers to a Neutral shoe that weighs no more than roughly 10 oz. Less is more with running shoes. Fact is, the less technology put into a shoe, the less injuries incurred. You ever notice what the Pro's wear at Kona? Most wear Running Flats. Running flats are like balet slippers. Their feet are strong and granted they've developed the ability to wear flats and run a marathon after thousands and thousands of miles run. And I'm not suggesting flats!! But ever since I've switched to ultra-lite trainers and 7 and 8 oz neutral shoes, I've had one injury (groin pull which was due to off-road running in sand) and my times dropped :45 seconds per mile within a few months. Just my wooden nickels worth of experience and opion

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I found this site tonight...as I realized that I'll probably need a new pair of shoes before race day in July and want them broken in without having them broken down. http://www.runnersworld.com/shoeadvisor I view it as a starting point but not the ending point for decisions on what shoe to purchase. By the way, the shoe I wear is noted as "A Clydesdale's best friend"...at what point is someone considered big or normal in the running shoe world? I'm not being a smart ... I'm a hair under 190 and nearly 6'2". I plan to race IMLP under 185 pounds and hopefully closer to 180. This is the first year I've ever run while staying under 195. Most runners that I know -- as opposed to people who run -- are smaller framed people and tip scales well under 170. Based on DC's comments, does anyone have thoughts on the amount of structure in the shoe a bigger guy needs? I checked my shoe at that site and see that it is about 1.75 ounces heavier that DC notes...and maybe I could stand to move down a level from the "beefy trainer for big guys" to a more "normal" shoe. I just don't know. |

I've run 5 stand-alone marathons and one Ironman marathon in Asics Speedstars, and will be wearing them at LP this year. Speedstar 2 Speedstar 3
Speedstar 4 Speedstar 5 They have a low heel drop and are roughly around 8 oz. The 3 & 4 were my favorite. I bought three pairs of the 3's. Not crazy about the 5's cause they removed a bunch of top materail to make it look more minimalist, but they used a thicker foam so the shoe would hold it's form and the shoe feels like an oven mitt in the summer. I only have one pair thankfully. But for LP I'll we wearing the 7's!

I take in more calories while biking than I do on the run, probably at least double the amount of calories per hour. On the bike I bring my own nutrition and use whatever I've practiced with in training, so far this year it is Hammer Heed and Hammer Gels. This year I'm experimenting with a feed bottle with most of my calories all in one bottle from which I take small sips throughout the ride. I have the bottle marked on the side so that I know that I'm staying on track with how much I should be drinking.
Because I hate running with a fuel belt and don't like carrying bottles, I live off the course during the run. Some races this is easier than others but LP will be fine as I like GU.
I'm not a fan of that Ironman Perform stuff and started having issues with it during IM Louisville so I expect I'll avoid it as much as possible. |

About a mile into it some yahoo was texting while driving, saw me and I really thought I was going to get hit, he swerved, I jumped and landed awkward in a semi pot hole... wham, left knee instant pain. Tried running again and it hurt, bad. Was able to walk home about a mile at a good pace but couldn't run. Went home, iced, took some anti flam meds and then put the TENS on it. Woke up feeling ok.... doing 2 x 10min at threshold tonight, we will see how it feels. The last thing I need is an injury due to irresponsible people. |

Is the (tiny) benefit from doing an LT running workout so soon after an injury worth the (potential big) risk of worsening an injury? I have to constantly amend and adjust my schedule based on my body/injury/illness/schedule/work etc. There is no harm in missing workouts or cutting them short. I have now missed 25 of my 'scheduled' workouts during this IM training block and I'm a-ok with it. Be careful and good luck. |
