They are super cute! Pink, grey, and black. Still sore, but not broken. Those socks are da bomb! And not too expensive for compression either. Nope. Now I just have to decide pink/grey or blue/green. I'm doing the Shamrock 1/2 in March on St. Patty's day, but not sure I would want them all the time. |

Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! Oh geez, I think my race is going to live up to its name as well. Weather Channel is calling for a high of 36F Sunday, partly cloudy and wind at 24 mph. For now just 10% chance of precipitation, hoping that doesn't change for the worse. Eeeek! Gotta bundle up for the race but especially the hockey game! I heard a rumor that the side of the stadium my seats are on the wind will be at our backs. Hope the lady who told me that is correct! Nice socks, to both Jen's argyles and Salty's Seattles! Socks are so fun. Edited by melbo55 2013-01-18 1:30 PM |

I can go ahead and pass on what she said, but before I do that Is this something that truly is necessary? I pretty much never go to the doctor. No. Also, serum ferritin isn't, by itself, that useful a number. I assume you know your diet's got good iron happening? (preferably not together with calcium or caffeine) Menstruation is regular and hasn't changed? Well, here is part of her post: So basically, check your goddamn ferritin, especially if you're:
I would recommend getting it checked once before every season or, if you don't race seasonally, right before you begin training for any given big goal race. Even if you're male and eat lots of delicious beef, I think it's important to get it checked out once in a while. Even if you take iron supplements, get it checked out.
I am only 50% of those things and love my red meat sooo I'm probably fine. I was anemic a looonnng time ago and have no idea if that is relevant information. My periods are kind of all over the board these days. In fact I just started and am mother-effing exhausted so I think it's setting me up to actually believe anything I read on the internets.
I do know about issues of long-distance runners (particularly female) and iron deficiency, but you're probably not going to keel over and die tomorrow even if you were. Fortunately, it's easily reversible. If you started having low energy and not being able to bust out workouts that normally are easy, yes, it's a major red flag and probably the first thing to look at (for a female distance runner) along with hemoglobin levels. If you eat red meat a couple times a week (as I said preferably without caffeine and calcium, and preferably with a Vit C source), and you otherwise also eat iron-rich foods, you're fine. Until you're not. Then worry about it. P.S. Have your periods always been all over the map or just lately? Uhhh, well I can't say that in the past I tracked it ALL that carefully (for obvious reasons ) but in the last year or so I felt it was becoming really inconsistent so I actually did start tracking it and yes, indeed it has become a little random. Def. not on a consistent cycle. Like I said, I can't absolutely confirm this is true because I wasn't tracking it. Do you recall what kind of anemia you had before / cause? Are you seeeeerrrrrrious??? Of course I don't! But it happened after I had mono in college.
Okay, so ... given that you're not cycling consistently and you feel like it's been more inconsistent (whether or not you have hard numbers), and that you're wiped out at the beginning of your cycle (and it's not just generally feeling awful because it's that time of the month, but really more fatigued than usual and affecting your runs), yeah, I think it would be worth it to have some testing done (helps to have a baseline anyway), especially if it would be covered by insurance and not too much of a hassle. If it's something you'd have to fork hundreds of bucks out of pocket for, nope. There's a few things you could test for if it's anemia / iron deficiency you're concerned about, but honestly, serum iron and serum ferritin, and TIBC (total iron binding c-something, count maybe?) will pretty much tell the story and even out of pocket that shouldn't run more than $50 or so (unless a clinic starts tacking on nurse's fees and doctor's fees and stuff, argh!) Hemoglobin won't be affected until you're really SOL ... er s-out-of-iron so not that important but it's also cheap and fast. Ok, I'm sorry to go back to this but is it not common to feel completely wiped a couple days leading up to your period (and maybe a couple days in?) I mean, trust me I know what being tired is (see my running logs.) But when I say wiped, I mean WIPED. |

Until you're not. Then worry about it. P.S. Have your periods always been all over the map or just lately? I recently had my ferritin checked and it was quite low. Like 10. It 'should' be up around 100, although you are considered normal at about 50. I am not a vegetarian. My periods are regular and not heavy (sorry guys). I eat red meat and other sources of both types of iron. I don't usually have caffeine or milk with my dinners. I was not feeling tired/letharigic/low energy (although in hind site, and after being on supplements for a while, I was--I find I am not needing as much sleep). I only found out I had a problem because I donate blood, and my hemoglobin was below their acceptable level twice in a row. I am not anemic, nor do I have low hemoglobin, when compared to normal values (not blood donor levels). I simply have low iron stores. I asked my doctor why and she said that some people just don't absorb dietary iron well, even heme iron. So, iron supplements it is. My doc figures it will be at least 6 months before I am back up to the 'normal range'. So, my opinion after all this babbling--if you are a female endurance athlete [or aspire to be as in my case ], I would get checked. If you are both those and donate blood, definitely get checked. You have nothing to lose in my opinion. |

Master 9705 Raleigh, NC area | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! 4agoodlife - 2013-01-18 12:14 PM Soooo (hard to believe, I know), I have a couple of tri-related questions. When I started this tri "experiment" in Oct, I didn't want to spend money on anything new....you know, just in case. I've been wearing DH's old tri shorts (not uncomfortable) but they're becoming a bit threadbare, and an embarrassing moment could be just around the corner. Followed some of the men's vs women's conversation a few days ago. I'm not against getting another pair of men's shorts (I'm long from hip to knee), but will I give up any padding comfort? If the "men's" shorts are comfy, just get a new pair of them ;-) If you are asking what we wear, I use DeSoto 400 mile shorts (female version) and DeSoto Forza shorts. The old style Forza's were awesome, like the 400 miles shorts with a different chamois. The newer version of the Forza's with the wide wasted band ride up my crack and are problematic :-( I think that you'll need to try on a few pair of shorts to figure out what works for you. For straight cycling, I use Terry Bella shorts. In the winter I just pull on a cheap pair of tights (sans chamois) over the shorts. I don't have a road bike yet...about three weeks out. Also followed the saddle conversation, and I know fit/comfort can make or break T.I.T.S. Did any of you "try out" saddles at LBS before buying? Is that something they do, or do I have to go in knowing what I want? Sorry, I'm kind of a leech on here...sucking up knowledge. I'll add insights when I have more experience. For now I will be a great cheerleader Many bike shops have tester saddles that you can try. This can be a good starting point. You mention getting a bike. When you test ride, you may know right away "this saddle won't work for me" or "this saddle may do the trick." If you know for sure that you don't want the saddle on the bike, you can sometimes negotiate for a discount on a replacement saddle. Those suckers aren't cheap! Definitely ask about test riding one. One of the shops in the area let's you basically check one out for a few weeks. |

Cooking is fun and relaxing for me. Supper this evening will be roasted Cornish hen, Provencal style. Scalloped potatoes and french style greens will be the sides along the ever present garlic bread. I will make do for liquid refreshment with well water and a good Merlot. The aromas coming from the two ovens have the dogs salivating. I refuse to confirm whether or not I too am drooling along with the dogs....
It's a long weekend so I should be able to get a lot of training in. Weather expects to play nice this weekend. Sunshine and highs in the 50's are promised. We'll see. Pardon my ramblings but even though the dogs are good company they do have a limited vocabulary. |

BUT it did get me thinking that because I pretty much never go to the doctor, I wonder if I should. Probably unnecessary though. I hate going to the Dr. I go once a year when I am required to go so I can maintain my flight status. Otherwise I take care of myself and let my body heal itself. The times I actually do go to the Dr most people know it is serious and are amazed. After I get out of the Army I will probably just get my yearly physical and that is it. That is more than I have gotten most of my adult life, so it will at least be a little improvement, |
