Probably sometime July.  I'm having trouble finding a 50k in the time frame I need it. I did see one in Las Vegas and the one in Seattle. If DS2 is still in GA I might have a look over there but I think most of the ultras on the east coast are up closer to you.

If all else fails I'll just go run 31 miles solo

Early November. I can offer a 6, 12, 24, or 48 hour option, a crew, and a place to recover. I'm tentatively looking at the 6 hour option. It'll be warm and hill free.

3 miles from my house - https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=35562

You have more options that that. You could run a trail marathon (or other distance) with some WU/CD. It doesn't have to be an exact 50K.

That being said, the Cougar Mountain series is excellent. I run there frequently. In fact, the mountain I ran this am was just ...ehhh, 3ish mountains away

Another friend getting into Ultras has been doing things like that. Run some more before or after the event. And treat it like an event more so than a race, particularly as hers could be a half marathon plus another 8 or so on one end or the other. I don't think the bit of time between race start/finish and the extra is a big deal as the big days here are more about just getting in a lot of running that day.

Originally posted by TXTriRook Thanks for the feedback on the taper! Mary, it's the Buffalo Springs HIM, which I know a few other Manatee's are doing as well. I'm hoping we can coordinate a meetup! Matt and Adrienne, what you guys do definitely makes sense. Without ever working with a coach (or getting massages!!) and being still somewhat new to the sport I really need to work on fine tuning what warm up, race effort, etc means to me. I always have been more of a go out and swim/bike/run kinda guy and hope that I can go faster and with less effort than my last workout. Of course some high effort and recovery gets worked in but nothing as structured as where it probably should be. Sean, congrats on the new bike!! Diamonds are kind of like the loch ness of bikes in my opinion. I've only seen one and it flew by me before I realized what it was! Blue/white with black wheels will look great IMO!

Just to represent all sides here, I'm not coached and don't get massages.

Some of the things you said in there have been going through my mind too. Same struggles with how much I want to push for that last bit vs doing other things too. Growing up in a competitive environment, the push to find out is strong. Think it's coming more too because I'm probably in the latest stages of where my peak performance would reach highest even though I could still do as good or better than where I'm at (and where I've been) for some years. No options stay at the front all the time, but do tend to keep up in the foreground.

There isn't much fun to a mind-numbing 3.3 mile loop course. However, it is what I have in the area and I may do the night 6 hour offering.

I'm assuming there is a story there...

Yeah, saw a smoking deal (like ridiculous) on an unpainted Dimond frame on slowtwitch. Quickly figured out it was perfect for my fit. Bam! Of course now I've got to get it painted and build it up which I'm sure will cost more than the frame did. But I couldn't pass that up!! And I'm definitely going to need manatee help on deciding how to paint this thing!!!

SWEEEEEEEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Uwharrie 50k might be the spring one.  Sorry!  On Friday  sent you a bunch of other ultras in the area in the October timeframe.  One is at the Whitewater Center, one is Pilot Mountain to Hanging Rock and there is one in Greenville, SC as well.  All are 3-4 hours from Charleston though.

I hope that all our northern hemisphere dads had a wonderful Father's Day (we have ours in September)

My mum turned 60 today. And what do you get your 60 year old mum for her birthday? Why running gear of course!
she is really excited to try her CW-X tights (hopefully they will arrive at her house this week) so thanks for your feedback with that one my Manatee friends. We also got her a medal hanger from Allied Medal Hangers, a running charm to commemorate her first official 10k race (engraved with the race name, date and her time) and a gift voucher for a local sports store.
She is really excited to run her first Half Marathon in August and has started talking about maybe joining us for the Disney Dopey Challenge in 2018.

I have come to the conclusion that as well as being a great mum my mum is also a pretty cool lady (that's her in the light coloured cap).

Sweet picture! I have never been able to get Mom into running (Dad did for several years and even did a marathon in his mid-40's) but my mother is still cycling several hours a week. (She did a 3-hour ride yesterday.) Got her some cool-weather bike gear at the Pearl Izumi outlet last year for her 77th birthday!

Could somebody please send summer weather our way? I rode three plus hours yesterday (at same time as Mom, not same speed!) at mid-day, including some fairly hard efforts, and never ended up taking off my jacket or wool arm-warmers. Saturday we got hail and icy rain on my long run. Ugh!

The running aspect of an Ironman triathlon is a marathon. Most people take on a marathon as a single event and the training for this uses up a lot of their time. Here are some tips for the run.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
