Ok, I survived!  Well, kind-of.

This has to go down in the books as one of my worst training days....EVER.  I managed to gut out a 2 hour ride/15 minute run (trainer/treadmill).  That's it.  That's all I had in me.

Now don't get me wrong ~ I LOVE this stuff.  I really do.  I would not be training for my 4th IM in as many years if I didn't; however, in our 17th week of training, I have only been able to ride 1, yes 1, of my long rides outside.  Just 1.  Every other one has been on the trainer.  AND, it is REALLY starting to get to me!  ARGH!!

Sorry for the vent guys.....you are the only group of people I know that can relate to my misery......thanks for listening

Hey, it happens to all of us! I'd rather it happen now then during the race! That's why I always like to have one or 2 horrific training days. When that happens it means your set!  Well that's my philosophy anyhow! Today wasn't the best motivating day for me either, but next wknd it will be better weather wise. You will get out there soon! The end of April always warms up! I love ur last comment about venting. I feel the same way because everyone else would say we are nuts and to forget it! It's kinda like LP BT forum is a family I've never known!

Don't feel bad I have yet to ride outside,  I got my new tri bike and haven't ridden her outside yet.  My trainer ride this morning and run were pretty rough for me today as well.  You did it so that is the hard part.  Keep up the good work.

I was kinda thinking the same thing - very little outside riding so far.  Between trainerroad and netflix, the overhead of riding outside is far higher than just hopping on the trainer for 60-90 minutes after work in the evenings.    So it occurred to me recently that I might end up showing up on race day with only a handful of outdoor rides done with the single purpose of getting the legs used to riding for 6-8 hours.

Hey thanks guys!  It make me feel better to know that I am not alone.

This is my earliest (in the year) IM and it's freakin' me out a bit not to have a bunch of outdoor rides in at this point.

Thanks for the support

Sometimes outside training isn't so great either. I did get the longest ride in thus far this year at 87 miles. But it was hell. It was an out an back where the wind switched on me near the halfway point. There is a big rain and wind storm coming tomorrow to the east evidently. Anyways, the way back was all head winds and 30 mph gusts. I was really miserable. I honestly would have enjoyed a trainer ride more. At one point I called mother nature a f!&@/(@! w+$^% and swore never again. I was on empty and the wind would just stop me at times. Really frustrating. Tomorrow I get to run in the rain - yahoo. Cant be worse than today. Listen to me whining. There are far worse things.... Best to everyone this weekend.

Yes, I hear all of those who still can't ride outdoors consistently.  Today it is raining and 41F   Somehow it always works out as most years up here it is rare to get out much at all in April and everyone is fine at IMLP    Have to get the quality riding in!

Today I swallowed a massive dose of reality (and six Gu's and three Powerbars).  While my friend is going to send me the file from his Garmin, I think we did a little more than 3,000 feet of climbing and covered 113 miles.  Not counting two stops for about ten minutes each, actually rolling time was 6 hours and 15 minutes.

So, when I get a couple of rests and ride at least part of the way in a paceline and climb half the amount of IMLP, it took 40 minutes longer than goal time for IMLP.

Now let me be the first to say that a few of you dear friends were kind enough, when I originally posted the goal times in this forum, to let me know that I was crazy.  I wrote down 5:36.  You were gentle and thoughtful and careful of my feelings.  Consider: I've never done an Ironman.  I'm trying to learn the discipline of pacing while I also dramatically improve my bike and run fitness.  Yet, I still held out hope to do this bike split in less than six hours.

I thank you all.  And, while I won't be expecting a 5:36 split any longer, I do look forward to some of those downhills in New York.

That is all.  Now back to your regular programming.

Oh, and there is driving rain outside right now, it is supposed to rain all day tomorrow and I'm scheduled to do a 10 mile road race in the morning.  It should be sloshy.

Headwinds are Mother Nature's free resistance training. We have some wicked wind here on Long Island especially out east by farmland, and the ocean winds by the south shore. Many of my rides are like the one you described today. These windy rides really strengthen and improve your bike fitness. I'd rather ride 5 hours into a nasty headwind then spend an hour on the drainer.

Wow, I feel like I was hit by a Mac Truck.

I drove out to Boston yesterday(4+hours each way) to watch my Caps' beat the Bruins(hockey playoffs). I was planning a big training day today but woke up feeling like poop.

I think I'm going to switch my off day from Monday to Sunday and just rest today.

I had a good weekend of training with:

Saturday's ride through Harriman and Bear Mtn was fantastic considering the weather held off.  With 3900' of climbing over 65 miles, the legs were feeling pretty good.  I had to cut the ride short because of an important baseball game (No, not the Yanks).  My son had a single and two doubles!

Sunday's run was "The Hook Mountain" half marathon.  I just finished and here comes the rain.  At miles 10, there is a ridiculous hill to come up, but the I was feeling good and decided to run it.  Many people deide to walk it.  I needed to run a total of 2 hours, so I added a few extra miles on.

It's raining and I'm recovering on the couch with the kids and watching a movie.

Life is good!

Well, 20-30 mph winds and 32 degrees forced us to stay inside on the trainer this past Saturday. It seems like the weather is reversing...it was warmer in late February than it is now in my neck of the woods. Frustrating. I just want a warm, relatively calm wind (meaning less than 15 mph) for a long ride. But, alas, cannot count on that come race day, so might as well suck it up!

Soaking rain run today. Got a half mary in. Running in the rain can be quite enjoyable ive learned. It's cool, not much water is needed and I had the exercise path to myself. It was good.

So was out on the run today and doing some running math... In marathon training long runs (from what I've done) capped out at 21-22 miles. No more.

On some of the long runs we have planned (in Finks schedule) there are 3 hour runs some days. I know some people on here are running machines, but if during a 3 hour run you go over that 21-22 mile mark, should the pace be slowed down to where you actually get in that full three hours?

That is exactly what I was thinking! Forget your 401k and other retirement plans - I would start blowing it all on tri bikes and first class air fair to Albany in June! That MLB contract will have you set for life!!!

In all seriousness, Scott - congratulations! That is a big day all around - sounds like lots of folks in the group are in the "heart of darkness" part of the IM training cycle. We all like to hear about those of us having good days.

Ah - and here is where you can really mess yourself up. If you have dialed your pace in a proscribed by your plan (what ever that may be) then either run by time or by distance - whichever the plan says. Don't second guess it.

But then again, my most recent open marathon was 3:20, and at my long run IM training pace, there ain't no way I would be covering more than 20 miles in 3 hours.

But then again, my long runs are all on very hilly trails.

But then again, don't pay attention to what others are doing. Trust your plan.

time it is! Course running on trails rather than beach paths / random hilly residential roads does sound much better...is it harder to keep your hr in the needed zones when on trails? Cause I know when on the road it's easy...

I pretty much agree with Tank, here - go by whatever your plan has had you do, either time or distance.

Reason is that the plan doesn't know your pace.  So if you start a plan based on miles and build up distance, you are generally going to be building up time, in parallel, at about the same rate.   All is good.  Likewise, if you go by time, and build up that way, you inherently build up distance at about the same rate.

If you go back and forth between time and distance, you can get yourself really screwed.  For example, a 7 min/mile runner starts with a plan and builds up to 20 miles - that distance is covered in 2:20.  If they then switch to a time based plan and jump to a three hour running session, they increase the time pounding pavement by 40 minutes - almost 1/3 more than their body has built up to.  Chance of injury goes up.

I think the major reason why plans cap out at 20-22 miles or so is that beyond that, the recovery time starts to grow dramatically - and you are better off capping a long run at 20 miles and being recovered in relatively short order rather than losing the next 2-3 weeks in recovery.

You should practice running at your desired HR zone-regardless of flat terrain or hills. Of course, the latter will be better practice for the big day. And trails will be kinder to your knees. And don't worry if it's hard to keep your HR in the zone-just do it. This is what training is all about.

Get a plan. Plan the training run. Implement your hydration/nutrition/pacing strategy. And learn from the results. Document what you learned and use it in the future.

Hilly trails! These are perfect for IMLP.

good luck
