I'm guessing it is a world cup thing only. I predict that this is a World Cup thing. We have seen this same discussion over the past 30-40 years. Remember the NASL from the 70's? Have you heard of the current USL Pro league? Or the current NASL? Of course not, and that's my point. Here in America we play football with our hands and feet. We won't change, and if you think I'm wrong, see the metric system as a point of reference. Having said that, I did get the opportunity to teach TW about offsides and a few other soccer specific things while Algeria was making Germans the world over sweat like crazy. So bummed they couldn't beat them. I think we are a long way past the days of the NASL, and yes, I've heard of them. MLS has a higher average attendance now than the NHL per game. I think soccer is here to stay. Of course, my main interest in the game resides on the European side of things, to be sure. The English game is much more interesting than what's happening here, at the moment. Though it has a long way to go for sure. I do believe it is making inroads, but I don't think it will see the growth that soccer people keep pushing for. As one who played quite a bit, I do find the game interesting/exciting in it's own regard. |

Not necessarily huge, but still there. Used to play quite a bit, but still find it hard to watch on TV. Haven't watched in a bit, but what made it tougher is that I couldn't see the dynamics of the entire play developing because they weren't zoomed out enough, but also not zoomed in enough to see how spectacular the moves these guys make are. Got to see DaMarcus Beasley play in his earlier years on the Fire and the difference was astounding. Have to see it in person just how fast he was as everything flattened out on screen.Originally posted by ponderingfox Originally posted by cdban66 Originally posted by amd723 Originally posted by ponderingfox I was thinking about going out to masters tonight for a swim, buuuuut, the US world cup game is on! I don't think that MLS will hit the popularity of the big three, and certainly hockey has better TV contracts and more money. I don't think it needs to be super popular, just get to the point of consistently entertaining matches and seasons, and a league capable of creating top-level players on the world stage. I will say that watching European matches is easier. American announcers just don't know how to call a game. They try to call it the same way they would a football game, and it doesn't work that way. I'd much rather listen to an English announcer than an American one. |

Ben, to your point, it seems that they are doing a good job on showing a pretty wide angle for the most part, then they replay with a tighter shot. But, as you would expect, it is generally only on goal or near goal plays that the replay happens. Split screen would be cool, but distracting as all get out. Tom, I haven't watched/listened to many American announcers, so I can't say for sure. But listening to Tommy Smyth is really cool. I LOVE his accent, which I have come to equate with futbol in general. |

Originally posted by laffinrock Originally posted by melbo55 Originally posted by brigby1 Well you really only missed the spelling of Knightrider as far as the trivia goes. The rest was just wtf towards your sense of similarity in styling. And because it's been too long without referencing AD somehow, nearly had GOB Bluth as the new voice of KITT, but Will Arnett was voicing for GM commercials. Instead they went with Val Kilmer. No idea if that would have worked, but the thought is hilarious. Well, an indirect reference, or rather a reference without mentioning it was being referenced, in true AD style = the ostrich pictures... It would've been impossible to watch the new Knight Rider without laughing. Heck, I can't even hear 'The Final Countdown' without picturing Gob with doves and fire. Okay, I'm going to confess my ignorance. (At least I'm not demonstrating it this time! ) Anyway, I have no idea what you people are talking about. AD? Gob Bluth? Doves and fire? At least I know what "The Final Countdown" is... AD = Arrested Development, a TV show about the ficticious Bluth family that originally aired on Fox from 2003-2006 and they recently (2013) released a Netflix-only 4th season. IMO, it was one of the most clever TV shows out there and never failed to make me laugh like a complete fool, and still does, watching the shows again. Salty, Ben and I are for sure devotees of the show, although I think there are some other manatees who are fans. Gob Bluth is one of the family members who fancies himself a great magician but is pretty terrible, often killing the doves/animals used for his tricks and totally bumbling his acts. Wait, that sounds awful but it's actually funny because we know no animals were harmed in the filming of the show... Edited to add: they would play "The Final Countdown" whenever he would do his act. Gosh it makes me so happy that education of the truly important things in life is still continuing in here. I'm so fortunate and grateful for the invaluable information I get from my fellow Manatees. How could I have ever been a successful triathlete without knowing this?! STEVE HOLT!!!! |

Master 3870 | Subject: RE: Manatee Monkey Mentors SHUT (Poptart or pet pic bribes considered) I don't even know how many pages I've missed even though I skimmed through a few times Was it a good racing Manatee weekend?? Trip to Cali was really nice, in the short and sweet kind of way. Crammed a lot into four days which included a lot of driving around the bay area. I think my parents were tired out by the time we left on Friday morning...I know I was. We had planned to meet J in Zion, but he had a crazy work week and didn't get the camping gear ready. Plus there were really high winds that would've made hiking with the kids not much fun. I had horrible timing for hitting San Bernardino at 2:30pm. Took three hours to drive the 210. Kids were awesome, I was wiped out. I asked J to find a place for us to stay the night because I didn't trust myself through the desert at night being so tired. It was the right decision for sure since we hit a wind storm at Palm Springs. Got home midday on Saturday, unloaded car, let the kids play on their new trampoline....and napped! Good thing since Sitter came over butt-crack o dawn on Sunday so we could get our ride in. After a week of doing no workouts, I'm still feeling those 50mi this morning. A few pics of our week (you didn't think I'd excuse you guys from seeing). Kids loved the beach and the bluffs...makes my heart happy seeing them enjoy where I spent so many hours of my adolescent years. The Monterey Bay Aquarium just keeps getting better...so many hands-on things for kids! My two couldn't get enough of the Deep Ocean tank. And T lost tooth #3. My mother said the California Tooth Fairy should be very generous, but I overrode her opinion and said California has enough financial issues to worry about (20140623_130332.jpg) (20140623_132637.jpg) (20140626_141823.jpg) (20140625_230333.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 20140623_130332.jpg (98KB - 4 downloads) 20140623_132637.jpg (40KB - 4 downloads) 20140626_141823.jpg (35KB - 6 downloads) 20140625_230333.jpg (68KB - 8 downloads) |

Erin - your kids are just the cutest and I love how you expose them to such a variety of experiences and places and the outdoors. Kirsten - I'm off to read your RR! Kate - hi, thanks for popping in! Salty - On the soccer thing, I got nothin'. It ranks above basketball and probably football but well below hockey and baseball. I just have no vested interest in the game - never played it, don't follow any teams, don't know some of the finer point rules. Hmm, kinda like football... |

Veteran 2842 Austin, Texas | Subject: RE: Manatee Monkey Mentors SHUT (Poptart or pet pic bribes considered) Well, looks like my favorite part of tri is evaporating for a bit - racing! With the move and a trip south with the kids beforehand, I've had to pull out of two races I was looking forward to (did them last year and have a bunch of friends at them) and also Timberman (same category, but haven't registered yet) - not to mention canceling the vacation we had planned around one of the races during the third week of July. Well, I guess I'll just have to register for the HIM in Austin in October and find one more to do down south this year (trying to get 3 in - not that I care so much about rankings, but it just feels like a totally blown season without getting at least 3 in). OK, vent over. This is all good, but I'm going to miss these races - I love racing in the North Atlantic and Winnepesauke! Still and all, getting psyched for the move, just letting myself be childish about missing my races. Someone call the Waaaaaaambulance! Carry on! Matt |
