Speaking of training plans...

As I taper in to my marathon I am, of course, starting to think about my training for the PPA. I am thinking that I will do, on a weekly basis, one LR of the up a mountain sort, one DM incline session, and 2 or 3 nearby offroad runs, and a cross training day of bike or sumthin.  Where I get unsure is duration/intensity of these sessions and how long to recover after the marathon.

I am still wondering if I should have Coach Michi help me put something together and stay on track. I'll be seeing her tomorrow and want to have an idea whether to hire her or not.

Thoughts?

Getting the off road should help. Don't need to go crazy, but being regular with it should help build up some skill and support areas.

You do want to get used to hills, but also be sure to look at how steep things are. Some places may have a lot of rocks to use like stairs, but others may be a ramp. The significance of the ramp is that your calves and ankle areas will have to be used to bending that far. Build into it, letting the range come, and the strength come. Hitting the limits of your range of motion every time is hard on your body. More so if it's not developed enough and heel levers off the ground due to that limitation.

I already do about 25% of my runs off road. Usually either on the undeveloped "roads" near my house or on the trails by the river.  I think most of the mountain trails around here will be a combination of ramp/rocks, much like the one I did yesterday and I think much like the PPA.

You also have a huuuuuuge advantage of living high. Not that you should not be thinking of your plan, doing what you are doing but it's a great bonus!

The man who won the PPM from 1966 to 1971 was from the Jemez Pueblo which is about 15 miles from my house His cousin was the only one to ever break 3:30.

Running a course that has battle reenactments going on simultaneously is WAY TOO COOL FOR WORDS.

By mile 4 I was hearing musket fire--they shoot blanks --but I saw the reenactment guys all over.  There is another location on the course that they had Revolutionary War reenactments going on and I was greeted by 4 men on horseback (who offered me a ride but they weren't going the same direction as me)

Totally had fun--even though it was the slowest HM I have ever done.  Had to walk from mile 9 forward cause my achilles went crazy.  But I walked it in and finished.

Love the taper discussions. This is my 4th 70.3 and I've never really gotten the taper quite right. This year I'm trying a different strategy so it will be interesting to see how I feel on Sunday. Can't wait to race with other Manatees next week!!

I hope that you all had a really great weekend.

After a week and a half of rain we have sunshine again this week and temps in the high 70s low 80s. It has made the grass grow like crazy so I spent 4 hours mowing yesterday. The season is definitely starting to change as we are getting some lovely crisp nights. I hope you are all starting to warm up and thaw out over there.

Happy Monday had a fun weekend not really working out. Due to birthday adventures on Friday and Saturday.

But I did manage just shy of 1700 m swimming yesterday while kids had swim lessons. I am FEELING that today. My coffee cup seems extra heavy that is for sure.

Hope everyone had a great weekend. Now watching Boston updates for friends today.

Happy Boston Marathon day everyone!

Any of us there this year, or have connections that are there for us to keep tabs on?

I won a 5k yesterday!  I ran a 21:03 and took the race in a sprint in the last 100 yards.  That's :55 off my time from last week.  I think the other runner and I really pushed each other to a faster time than either of us would have run independently.  It was a tactical race back and forth, and it's a fun story to tell.  Really cool to win my first race!

Oi good job I would have quit. Running up here in the snow is like that and well its why I didn't run much the last two winters with record snow falls.

It feels like running in the sand and drives me bonkers. Way to go.

Checking in with a couple of things.  Saturday I rode 100 miles on Zwift.  It was way harder doing this on the trainer than it was outside.

But more importantly this weekend I'm getting married.  There is a lot of work, time, and thought that gets put into weddings that I didn't realize until we started planning our own.  With that said it's an exciting time, and I'm looking forward to it!

Nothing motivates quite like gunshots!

It sounds like it was fun!  Sorry about the Achilles though :-(  That part sounds a lot less fun.

Wow, lots of congratulations are due today to my dear Manatees.

Tom, way to go on the 5K win, Mr. Speedy!!  Your season is off to a flying start!

Spanky, happy birthday and happy 1,700 meters.  Makes me tired just thinking about it.

Matt, weddings ARE a lot of work, but so worth it in the end.  Enjoy yourself and savor every moment.  It's a celebration of where you've been together and your shared commitment to your future.  Wishing you both all the happiness in the world.  And a Zwift century--whew!!

Judi and Hands, good job finishing those grueling races.  You two have such grit and determination.  Keep up the good work.

I did my longest run to date this year on Saturday.  It wasn't super speedy but it went well.  A little knee tweakiness here and there but nothing intolerable.  I think I'll be in good shape for my 5K next weekend.  I won't be setting any land speed records, but I should at least be faster than last year.  I also swam 800 yds. and incorporated some "speed" work.  I'm definitely feeling it today; it really confirmed how weak my L hip flexor has gotten.  Despite that, I definitely feel stronger than I was at this time last year.

I've noticed that I'm not as motivated by the joy of accomplishment this year so much as determination to do better than I did last year.  It's an interesting change.  Training doesn't feel as fun but there's still satisfaction in seeing my gains and comparing them to last year.  Did anybody else have a similar experience your 2nd year of doing tris?

Has Yanti explained the Manatee Multiple wedding thing to you?   How many weddings and receptions did she have?  Jakarta, Bali, IMWA.  I feel like I'm missing a few in there...

I'm very excited but also very anxious. I feel great about the swim and the bike, but I'm very worried about the run.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
