This is my first year racing a HIM and also my first Eagleman.  I'm fairly familiar with the course (I went to school on the Eastern Shore of MD).  I recently got aero bars for Christmas and plan to add those to the bike this spring.  Do you guys think its worth it time wise to rent aero wheels for the race?

I'm going to really just complete the race as a goal and I'm sure I'll have a time estimate later in the season.

If you have to choose between spending money on renting aero wheels or spending money getting a good quality bike fitting with your new aerobars on there, I'd go for the bike fitting.  Being in an aero position for 56 flat miles is much more important than the speed gained from wheels.

Maybe the better question is, how much time should i expect to save if i rent aero wheels vs. use my regular wheels?  Then you can decide what monetary value you place on the time savings.

Subject: RE: EagleMan Ironman 70.3 Triathlon : Official Thread

thats a good point.  I do plan on getting a proper bike fit when I put the aero bars on.  Question though is if I get fit for the aero bars and ride in areas where I won't be using the aero bars (hilly parts of Maryland) will it effect my cycling that much?

Or maybe the better question would be, will the fit between a normal road bike fit between a road bike with aero bars be that much different?  If so how?

You should still be able to do most of your riding in your aero bars.  There's no reason you can't ride in them on most hills.

So I am still deciding on what to do as far as what wheels to race.  Then I remembered the Aero Disc cover.

I use to use a UNI-Disc wheel cover.  I guess that will give away my age.  It worked great

Thanks JK.  I think Fred rides 404’s with a cover.

My wheels (TTR3) are the stock wheel that came with the Felt.  Their are 40mm deep and work well.  I can get a cover for less than renting a pair of Zipps.  So that maybe another option for me.

Save some cold beers for me guys, my first HIM so I'll be ready for a brewdog.  Keep up the smacktalk thoughLaughing

How is the current in the Choptank?  Is the swim difficult?  I hear there can be plenty o' jellyfish that time of year

As far as current goes, it all depends on the tide and wind direction/intensity that morning.

As far as jellyfish, that mostly depends on how quickly it warms up in the spring and how much rainfall we get.  They usually don't get 'bad' until a few weeks after eagleman, but there is plenty of variability in that statement.

FYI on lodging--2 weeks ago we got rooms at the Days Inn right in Cambridge if anyone is still looking.  Sam is the man you want to talk to.  He is only there during the day.

Not sure if anyone has covered this yet, but my wife is doing the Six Pillars Century Ride on May 1st. As well as the century they have a ride around the eagleman course. This includes a couple of rest stops. She's using it as a low stress way of going around the course.

Getting very excited for this race!  About a handful of us will be out on the course training bright and early this coming Sunday!  Any other BT'ers going to be out there?  The weather looks perfect for a nice brick workout!!

PennState - 2010-04-14 6:26 PM How's everybody feeling about doing Eagleman at this point in the year. I'm looking forward to racing this for my 3rd time. Anyone else starting to think more about this race?

Is swimming involved?  Crap!

I'm feeling pretty good, it'll be my second year in a row (and second hIM).  I'm an equal swimmer to last year, a better cyclist and either an equal to slightly worse runner.

This.  Eagleman is my first HIM so just surviving is goal #1.  Swim is ahead of schedule, bike is behind schedule and run is ahead of schedule.  I need to put some serious miles on the bike over the next 7 weeks or I'm going to be in for a rude awakening.

Personally I'm hoping for a great race.

A better swim, a faster bike and a MUCH faster run.

I can dream right?

I am dreaming too……

and hoping for some PR’ering

On the training side things are going well.  Last week was a near perfect week of training for me with volume and intensity.  This week was a little short, such is life.

btw new Zipps 808's for this show.  Disk cover will be here soon.
