swbkrun - 2010-12-13 10:45 AM VO2 testing.... Talk to me about it?  Worth it?   If you haven't done it and want to, how much would you pay to where it is a no brainer?  If you haven't ever gotten you VO2 tested before---WHY NOT?

Our coach did our V02 testing, it's what he used to generate our HR zones which we use for training.

It's a pretty simple test for run, you get on a treadmill and they put a mask over your mouth and nose, then the speed/incline is increased until you can't run anymore.  Bike is the same thing but on a trainer.

Sam had it done before we got our coach so she might know how much it cost on it's own.

Seems like a good way to get closer to correct HR zones.

out of all seriousness what does it cost down there to get it done?
I have considered getting it done, but its around $150-$200, depending on where you go.

Getting the VO2 done can definitely help in training.

Very simply put. It is basically a measurement of efficiently your body can use the oxygen you are taking in while riding or running. The body cells become "overloaded" with oxygen and are unable to efficiently use extra O2 you are taking in. When this occurs you will start expelling oxygen along with the CO2. That is your VO2 max level. Generally around 80% of PRE. When testing you are measuring the amount of CO2 expelled. Once you reach the point where your body cannot use the all oxygen you are taking in it will just expel the excess with each breath. At this point you will have to slow down as you are out of anaerobic fuel. The idea of increasing your VO2 level is so that you can go for longer periods at a higher rate of energy consumption. That is how top marathoners etc. operate at peak performance level for such long periods of time.

I haven't had this done and don't know what the cost is up here. Maybe I can get it done cheap through the university sports facility here. I would suggest checking your local universities if there are any close. You never know.

If any of you want to know how to get a decent read on your heart zones without this expense let me know.

Sam paid $65 for the first one she had done but I think where our coach does them is $190

She said to check out hospitals and universities they could be cheaper.  I know she had her BMI done at the hospital and it was much cheaper than going to a fittness type person.

Come to Wisconsin where Dineen and I are enjoying -22F windchills....but I wouldn't suggest you take your hat off!

PS Dino--love the FB pics of the family.  Shelly may be short, but she's HOT! right Fatty?

I caught her when she was still young and dumb!

And yes I agree, the weather up here sucks right now!  Virtually impossible to run outside due to the cold and layers of ice.  I HATE THE TREADMILL!!!

Friend request sent...

Oh and since John's a facebook stalker I went through all his friends and sent requests to everyone from the group, and to any other good looking women he was friends with...

That is why i constantly turn down his friend requests.

Have wanted to -- always been curious, but cost is a big prohibitor for me, as I'd want to do it for run AND bike. Spending a couple hundred to get the data doesn't seem so bad, but then ideally you should be testing regularly as your fitness changes/improves, right?? Throwing down $200 every few months adds up too quickly for me. If it were a one-and-done I'd be more willing to do it.

I've had, what seems to me, good experience getting HR values based on self-administered TTs for running and biking (or using races and the VDOT calculator for running). In fact, my max HR has always been within a couple of beats each test. For running I have found my pace changes (i.e. how far I can run in a 30 min. test, and I lap at 10 min. to get the AHR of the last 20 min.) from test to test depending on my current level of fitness. I don't have pace data on the bike as TT tests I've done are on the trainer but when I've done them my HR zones have been the same each time (FWIW) -- I'd like to think/hope RPE might be different at different levels over time??

Got to do lactate testing in college (back in the 80's) with the ear--blood-draw. We thought we had died and gone to heaven when our coach started doing that as all-of-a-sudden we had these seemingly slow paces for so many of our sets. It was awesome, as early in the season we'd do lots of what is probably now considered Z2 training (we called it percentages). I was looking at my old data recently and noticing how my 80% (or whatever) paces got faster as the season progressed. We'd do testing during specific workouts and also at meets. Pretty cool to do it regularly and not have to pay for it!!!

Watched the 49ers crush Seattle at the Portland airport today.  Was a bit outnumbered!

Spent the weekend in Portland for a family wedding, and had a blast.  Ran outside in that rain, however, and can't begin to imagine how those of you that LIVE in those climates do it.  Hats off to you all.......

Suzy VO2 and lactate threshold are not exactly the same but are very closely related and botht related to endurance/speed training. They both deal with the efficient use of oxygen in the blood system. Lactate refers to the build up in your system to the point where an incomplete metabolism is not achievable and the lactate cannot be cleared through from your body faster than it is being produced. VO2 is the actual optimal use of oxygen and is not totally dependent on energy being used up or ... the highest rate of oxygen consumption attainable during maximal or exhaustive exercise. It is the point where you start exhaling oxygen because your body cannot process any more. Lactate threshold is the point during exercise of increasing intensity at which blood lactate begins to accumulate above resting levels, where lactate clearance is no longer able to keep up with lactate production.

If VO2 max is your aerobic endurance potential then your lactate threshold plays a significant role in how much of that potential you are tapping.

I've had VO2 testing done at UT and UTSA and both cost about $150 from the University so it's not necessarily cheaper there but they do know what their doing.  You don't have to do it every couple of months.  Once a year is plenty.  You are all already in good shape.  Throughout the year you probably go from a 7 to 9 rather than 4 to 9 if you put a scale on your fitness level.

Great explanation Rob.  And to add I think in training your goal is to get your LT as clsoe to your V02 max as possible.  That would mean that you are optimizing all of your potential.  You cannot change your V02 max even with all of the training in the world but you can improve your LT numbers.

Hey Peeps!  I have been checked out for a while due to travel and life but hopefully can re-enage for a while.

I caught up on all of the posts and want to give a huge CONGRATS to everyone who raced in LV and to Glen and Julia on their races a few weeks ago.  Also to Sam and Tony for their race last weekend.

Winter cold has invaded NY and we might see some snow tonight.  We do a lot of skiing in the winter so I am not complaining about the snow...just the 18 deg. high temperatures and sub zero wind chills!

Hope eveyone is well.
