Member 285 Cypress, Texas | Subject: RE: More Manatee Mayhem - 2017 Edition - Closed Just popping in to give a quick update. Things are trending in the right direction, but it has been a roller coaster ride. Every time I think I'm out of the woods things set me back a bit. My neurologist doesn't like how slow it's progressing and how much issues I still have at the moment. The dry heaving and the nausea is a big problem in the morning and the lightheadedness/dizziness at random times throughout the day are annoying to say the least. We are at this point 95% sure after ruling out a bunch of bad stuff that it is either another round of Guillain-Barre Syndrome or CIDP (The chronic version of it). My neurologist wants me to do one more full body PET scan to rule out any localized Myeloma. My neurologist is starting me on a 5 day IV treatment on Monday and we will see if that will help kick things into place a little quicker. Every once in a while I get a short walk in, but not very often. Work, Doctor's appointments and family are consuming most of the time, not to mention that I'm not feeling well enough to do much and it's a fine line where the exercise feels good versus knocks me back. Hope you are all achieving your Tri goals for this year. In all likelihood I will have to focus on next year for mine. Markus |

Evidently I was one of three that did not walk the whole thing. And I was beyond slow. Turtles would have beaten me. The benefit of getting old!!! |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: More Manatee Mayhem - 2017 Edition - Closed Congrats on the podium! This actually happened to me as well, but really silly. A few weeks ago I was second (or so I thought) in my AG in a race in Singapore. Then about four days after the race, the director e-mails and says that actually the women in the age-group waves ended up swimming a shorter course due to increasingly rough water conditions after the first wave that I swam in, ("elite" --it doesn't mean pro; it means you have finished in the top 20 in the series races in the past year!), so our "elite" results can't be considered with the others in our AG for awards. So we are now getting awards for a new category called "Age Group Elite". The only issue being, there were only two 45-49 AG women in the Elite wave (the majority were teenagers!), and I was second to the other "old lady" in my wave by about 35 seconds. So now, instead of being second out of maybe 30 or 40 women (which I'm pretty sure I would have been as I have been so many times in the past); I'm getting an award for being second out of two. What really takes the cake is that they are mailing this award to Vietnam at their expense! Plus, the most money I've ever won in a race was for the slowest half-marathon I ever ran (split at IM Vietnam 70.3 in 2015 when I was really sick). One of the sponsors put up $ for the top run split by a man and woman from Vietnam, and the Vietnamese decided to claim me as their own regardless of my citizenship, since I'm a resident. (Maybe there weren't any female citizens who finished that year??) Plus I had to get on a podium for that with Caroline Steffen, who got even more $ for having the fastest run split for pros. I donated it all, at her suggestion when I told her how mortified I was, to charity. Just thought it was funny--I run a 2:13 half and get $300; I got $0 when I ran a 1:16 back in the day. Master 9705 Raleigh, NC area | Subject: RE: More Manatee Mayhem - 2017 Edition - Closed Originally posted by amd723 Originally posted by brigby1 It was on a race car track, had a pace car just in front, pacers rotating in and out, and had some other prohibited tech gear. Part of me wanted to be excited for it, but the majority was rather meh. Fit it within competition rules. I don't like completely ignoring stuff, but with the amount of attention grabbing things today I'd rather not build up something like that as it may very well take away from the real attempt. yeah, this is how I feel. I couldn't get excited for this artificial marathon record attempt. Running as fast as these guys did is amazing, but the whole set up left me cold. Yeah, I read the article about it in RW and I felt the same way. |

Yes! I remember being SO JEALOUS of everyone working out. Is your doctor understanding about you wanting to be active? Do you have a bike trainer? If so, you might ask if he is OK with you using that. How many weeks are you in the sling? |

Yes! I remember being SO JEALOUS of everyone working out. Is your doctor understanding about you wanting to be active? Do you have a bike trainer? If so, you might ask if he is OK with you using that. How many weeks are you in the sling? I made sure the doctor and associates knew I was very active and sitting still wasn't really a good option for long, so we figured out what would be best and how to go about it. Ellipticals came up pretty quick, but not use the the arm handles (which aren't great anyway). Rather, rest hands on the stationary handles. They really loved it when finding a recumbent was an option and did that for the first couple weeks. Everything was super easy here, mostly like a walking pace effort. I'm trying to remember how bad your break was? Mine was shattered, which isn't just a break all the way through, but a bunch of pieces (16 for me) that had to regrow back together, so I had to be especially careful and it took longer than others have. I have no idea how a plate & screws did the job there. Likely why it was several months before I felt ok on an upright bike whereas others have come back sooner. I did have multiple rounds of therapy exercises to do throughout the day, so that also had the added effect of helping tame that need to do something. That combined with getting ready for anything taking so long, plus needing to rest for a spell after everything, really helped with not being too bored. And as much as possible, tried to keep my mind more on where I was instead of how much I had lost or was losing. I would have gone nuts otherwise, just building upon what I had at the time. A lot of patiently going about my business, trusting that it things will come back. How is your eating going? It was just mind blowing how much less I had to eat and still gained a notable amount of weight (holiday season didn't help there either). 3 "meals" a day was it and they were shrunk down to what was a snack before. |
