It's official, my time is validated by USATF, my entry is paid by my club and I am registered for the 10,000 M at USATF Club Nationals next Friday at 7:15 PM! I know some of you are friends with me on Facebook and I shared how on the fence I was about competing after only 4 weeks of preparation post surgery but I figured I earned the spot and may as well go out and do the best that I can do, although a DFL is likely I am just happy to have the opportunity to show up!
What is everyone doing for the 4th?
That's exciting! My plan for the 4th is to actually sleep in -which means probably up at 6!! After that, just taking it easy and then enjoying all the firework displays you can see from downtown. What are you doing? |

Stay Safe! Salty - I'll be swimming across the Peace River. Well, swimming is a strong statement, but I'll get across. Then later a party at a friend's house. |

What are you doing? I'm heading out to hike first. There is an old decommissioned rail trestle, the highest in the country in fact (with no handrails) that I am going to cross as some sort of attempt to embrace my fear of heights. Then heading out to our family canal property to chill out and harvest/cook seafood on the beach, sail the catamarans etc. Then tomorrow going to our friends roof deck to watch fireworks. Should be good stuff. |

Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Manatee Monkey Mentors SHUT (Poptart or pet pic bribes considered) Salty - ANNYONG! and congrats on following through with Nationals, and I know you won't be DFL. Chris - that swim looks fun, although when the YouTube page came up a related video came up for 'Alligator, Peace River, Punta Gorda'. Please stay away from any of those characters! Jon (TN) - good luck in your race, enjoy that cigar and the rest of the day, and yeah, wishing you no fireworks as well! TJ - great news on the coach and kid front, lots of good stuff in your life. Kirsten - THE FINAL COUNTDOWN! ha ha ha, yes, it needed to be in your heads one more time! Nice work getting those long workouts out of the way. Sounds like you are very well prepared for your race, which I just realized is the same day as IMLP. Monica - good luck on your final day! Wheeee! Lots of good stuff happening in your life, too. Mary - enjoy Ohio, and have fun with that fast Foxy! My Fourth of July plans: heading to Wild, Wonderful West Virginia to visit in-laws and hopefully swim and/or trail run but stay upright if I run. Wishing all manatees a safe holiday/weekend no matter where you are in the world! |

Monica I hope you make it through your last day! Salty, awesome that you are racing. You always get so much out of races, even if you are DFL. I love how you learn something each time; I have really tried to take that through my IM training. Every long ride especially, I tried (haha I just typed tired instead of tried) to have a takeaway. TJ, I know there must be mixed emotions, but congrats to you and your son. I just ran my last long run this morning. It was really tough to get through. I had to keep telling myself that hurting now will make it easier to deal with the hurt on race day! Last long ride on Saturday. I am looking forward to shedding some of this fatigue! I hope you all have an amazing Fourth spent with family and friends doing whatever brings you joy! Let the taper madness begin!!!!!!!!!!!!! Edited by rrrunner 2014-07-03 1:52 PM |

The race went well. I'm having a crazystoopidbusy week. Did I tell ya'll about Coach Scott? I re-met him at the gym a few weeks ago but I'd met him before at tri related venues. He calls himself the Ironman Pastor. He is starting a coaching group, which would be more economical than one on one coaching. Here is the site where he describes the group. I had thought about doing Socorro but not Patriot but I'd consider doing both if I join the group. I've heard good things about him from multiple sources, and I'd like to see how I do when coached. The price is a bit high for us, but doable, especially since it includes two race entries. He's aware of the IT Band issue so I'm sure he'd build that in to my plan (I told him I plan to try to run a short "freedom" run on Friday). What do you all think?
Do you think that you'll be able to attend most of the coached workouts? If so, it's not a bad price at all! It should like you did your homework and people like working with him... Tell me about your freedom run. My freedom run is just a very short (mile tops) attempt to get back to the joy that is running. The leg is feeling good with few pangs of pain so I'm going to attempt a super easy, flat, slow run. I think I could make most of the workouts. My schedule is USUALLY pretty flexible so I could get to early or late sessions unless I'm out of town or have an early/late appointment in Santa Fe. I emailed him and asked about easing back in to running and doing some strength training to minimise the ITBS and he said "I can assist you with sport specific strength training. I cover some of thath with everyone, but would be open to focus with you on your needs. I will also be dealing with recovery & recovery tools. I think you would benefit from that also. No problem on the ramp back up on running, every thing we do in training & racing has a purpose." Chris and Janyne made some thoughtful points. This may also be good timing to get someone else's help as you try to work through the ITBS issue as you train . Only you know you, but having him to give you other exercises and advice might be useful right now...plus the focus on the S/B with him even if you don't hit the running very hard. Curious to see what you decide
With support from DH and good answers from Coach Scott, I am going to give it a go! Excellent! This is definitely a good dry run, especially with IMAZ in the back of your mind. This is going to be good! |

I learned a lot from you during this year's Boston experience--you took it for what it was and reveled in it. That kind of thing is the stuff of life, I believe. Go have a blast at the 10,000. And you know how I feel about DFL Bit of a similar place with the Bali 10K swim ... still struggling with fatigue from thyroid and post-viral issues plus a week's food poisoning (hit me really bad). However, I gotta try to eke out a sub-4:00 in order to qualify to swim Western Australia's Rottnest Channel Swim (~20K) early next year. Whether I do or don't, I'm just going to go out there and make a great day. If I don't make X time or even have to cut out early, that's the moment I'm alive to enjoy and be able to create at all. |

Veteran 416 Cleveland, Tennessee | Subject: RE: Manatee Monkey Mentors SHUT (Poptart or pet pic bribes considered) I hope everyone had a great 4th. We only had "deliberate" fireworks here. Our EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) guys did a controled detination with a huge fire ball, then 2 aircraft did a nice fly over and launched flairs. A training question. I am doing my workouts back to back. Would it be smart to alternate which one I do first? Current schedule looks like this: Monday: 3.5 mile run/20 minutes rowing/weights (shoulders/core) I am trying to do the runs early enough to beat the heat, around 4-4:30 am. Weights and bike are in an A/C gym so not as prone to heat issues. I know ideally in SBR order would help, but not always possible due to work. Any significant issues doing it out of "order"? |
