Suzy, I know you were kidding.  Your question was either the first or second question.  I had 2 questions, but I got pulled for a 911 call so I didn't get to finish listening to it.  It should be released maybe Friday or Monday for listening.  But yeah, he spent several minutes talking about metabolic efficiency and decreasing your race day nutrition to avoid GI issues.

I don't recall if he specifically answered your question about taking or not taking gel's.  But I was lead to assume that by  training your body to properly utilize stored glycogen, you'll be able to reduce your total carb intake by upwards of 50-60% (if I'm not mistaken).

Congrats Suzy, I had a hunch that is what you were hinting at earlier today.

I had an abbreviated day today.  My wife had Lasik surgery done this afternoon so I went with her for the procedure and helped play Dr keeping up with the drops every 30 minutes tonight.

I managed to squeeze in a 30 minute Yoga session, first time doing that, I am glad my wife got some good laughs out of it, probably rightfully so since I have been giving her crap for the sheilds she has to wear over her eyes that make her look like a fly.  A nice 30 minute recovery run on the treadmill tonight following.  I hate to say it but I am warming up to the treadmill a little, still dislike it, but time is not like pulling teeth at least.

I have picked up a few new toys in the past week.  I took back the LG tri suit I got for xmas because I don't think I will care for the rear zipper.  I then ordered a Zoot black w blue piping tri suit.  Last weekend I picked up a very gently used 09 Giro Atmos helmet for 20 bucks, pristine condition and included the case and extra padding.  I am excited about this purchase!  Finally the Hed Jet 60 rear with PT SL 2.4+ upgraded hub and the new Shimano freehub are on the way, hope to have it installed and fired up next week!

Found out my skis are now ready to go after they had some issues transferring bindings and I had to buy new ones.  Time to sell the old ones and get out and use the new ones before my trip to CO in Feb!

I have an extremely positive outlook on things today for some reason.  It has been an amazing few days despite my workouts not going quite as planned, I will have a couple of heavy days leading into the weekend, but all will be well!

My turn to rant...
I had a mole removed from my lower back on Dec 29.  While the stitches were in I've been strength training and riding. Today I got the stitches out.  As I was setting my heater up in the garage before strength training I feel like I get shot in the back.  The incision tears open and blood is everywhere.  Doc doesn't want to re-stitch so now I have steri-strips and glue.  Can't do anything for a couple days.  Biggest problem...shoots my "31 workouts in January" plan.
I get a medically induced two day's rest Cry
Rant off...

Boo!!!! That is icky and sucks. So sorry!! Blech. Here's hoping the mole was nothing more than a mole and if it was something more that they took good margins.

Suzy -- GREAT news about Bob. Thanks for sharing!

I know that 12 oz is not much, but curls are still technically working out.  If you are an overachiever, you could go straight to the 40oz curls...  You would probably need to lower reps a bit though...

Good idea, Andy.

Thursday night between 8pm and 12am EST I intend to do somewhere  between 6 to 10 sets of 12 ounce curls.
Picked up some Select 55 for tomorrow night.  It's pretty good in case you're wondering.
Go 'Bama (I don't like the SEC, but I like Texas less).

Happychick - 2010-01-06 1:17 AM Holy crap...running while pushing a stroller is no joke!  I attempted a 3 mile run yesterday doing that and my 5 mile run today totally kicked my arse!  I'm praying my friend will be able to keep helping me out with (watching) Sammi so I can work out cuz those stroller runs just aren't going to cut it for the next few weeks while hubby is away!  However, I gotta do what I gotta do, right?  Now if I could just find a way to take her swimming with me!

Damn straight! I push my kids (3 and 1 - but they are big kids!) in a double Chariot and it's like running uphill the entire time. I love training that way though because on race day, watch out! I feel like I could run forever.   No daycare at the gym/pool?

Nope, no daycare at the pool ~ I live on a military base.  I have a friend who is helping me out as much as she can but she is on the go ALL THE TIME so I'm just taking it in strides right now!

what brand do you guys have.  we have bob's.  i've never been able to find one with adjustable handles.  being on the tall it takes some getting used to.  it also changes my stride a little bit.  and its funny for some reason i can only run with my left hand on the handle.  obviously two hands on it won't work but whenever i try holding it with just the right hand, within a minute or so i've switched hands.  sometimes without even realizing i did it.

cool thing though is now with the third kiddo here and jarrett training for lone star we can all go out for a run.

I have the same problem.  I've found that I keep using my left hand as well and my running stride/stance/everything changes so I really feel it at the end, no matter how short a run!  Oh well, we do what we have to do, right?!   Speaking of which, it'll be interesting to see how tomorrow goes...as long as it isn't raining, I plan on taking Sammi with me to the track so I can do speed work while she will have the whole field in the middle to run.  My friend has mentioned possibly coming with us so that will help cuz otherwise I foresee me running in the field (with/after Sammi) quite a bit myself!

Put her in a a little floatie behind you and tie a rope around your waist...I bet she'd love that.

The image of that just about made me fall off my chair laughing! I would try it if I thought she might actually stay IN the floatie!!

Suzy ~ anxious to see the finished product!   Also, that is great news about your friend!!!

Trina ~ I have to agree that aero bars are not something to stress over right now.  I just finished my first season and have I don't have any...however, I will admit that its way cool to blow by all those people with expensive tri bikes while I'm on my li'l ole road bike!   (But then again, I'm easily entertained!)

Suzy!!!! great to hear about your friend Bob and you are right I don't want to know how you know he can put his own pants on. That could just lead to an unending thread by some of the people here. I won't mention names but their intials might be Trevor and John .

Can't wait to see your bike all done. I'm jealous. I'm still riding my 30 year old Frankenstein and will be for this year as well. No new bike in the near future for me.

Trina. I would be nice to get all the stuff you are looking at but it can be pricey to start with. I did my first year of races with a new tri shorts, shirt, runners and a borrowed bike (I got clip on aero bars in year 2). I rented my wetsuit.  I am still using the borrowed bike but the owner doesn't wanted it back so its mine now

Whoever said this sport was cheap. Between races, gear, nutrition and toys one could spend a small fortune.

I did my LAT test this AM on the treadmill. I can officially say that this is not a fun workout! Running at near max capacity for 30 minutes stinks! I got it done and have my HR number for the the last 20 minutes, run at a continuous 8 mph. (155 AVG HR). Now we'll work out my training zones from that.

Many of my training sessions are indeed fun. This one wasn't I had to play mental games with myself. When I wanted to stop or slow down I imagined I was at  the end of a race and was trying to sprint to the finish line. You know that adreniline boost you get when you are at that point in a race? We'll I was trying to leverage that feeling to get over the rough patches. It only worked a couple of times. I guess I can't fool myself too many times. Anyway I am glad it is done for now. I am sure I will have to repeat it in a couple of months.

Ok, now that is really funny!ok, you guys can tease the crap out of me, especially when I am flying by you on my little speed racer.....

We are once again getting dumped on...at least 6 inches of white fluffy stuff.  Southern WI into ILL is looking for over a foot. I think I need to leave for Mexico tonight.  Oh wait, the flights will probably all be cancelled.

Man I do not know what I would do if my HR was that low!  I must just have a high HR while working out, my first marathon, I ran at nearly 180 bpm the whole thing.  I think I averaged 167 or so this past year.

I do the same type of mind games when doing tempo sets.  The other night I was doing a tempo run on the trainer, and felt pretty strong on the 8th one as I was crossing Kona finish line with Chrissie!

I am going to be a bit hypocritical here because I have not been fitted on my new bike yet, but the first thing I would ask if you have had a professional fit, could be that you have the seat in the wrong spot or an improper angle in general.  Possibly too aggressive of a drop between saddle and aero bars(if you use them?)

I have been in a similar situation with the Arione seat.  I just could not get it comfortable without going numb.  I made the switch to the Adamo Race seat.
1 What version are you on? It could be that you just need more padding of the road, typhoon, or even century model(if the seat eliminated numbness, but causes sit bone discomfort after 4-500 miles)
2 I see 20 hours, how many miles?  Mine took a good 300 miles to get even adjusted properly and now tolerable for greater than 40 minutes.
3 As relating to the fit. I worked on my angles first, and then more recently have done position/tilt together.  I had it very far forward, figured out fast that was not right as I was losing power in my legs.  I moved it back, and sat back more than I thought I should initially, and got much more comfortable on the seat.  The install guide says you should see part of the third crescent, I think I could almost see 2 the way i was first sitting.  Now there is just a little bit that shows up when I am on the bike and in aero bars

All of that said.  You may try to go to a LBS and get your sit bones measured and have a seat recommended for you, or take that info and find something online that will work well for you.  My sit bones seem to be just a bit wider than ideal for the Adamo, but it works.

The V-flow gets great reviews and I know their customer service is outstanding to get you on the right seat.

Lastly, I always notice on the trainer I have more discomfort than I normally do on the road, I do not know why, but both numbness and pressure on my sit bones increased when I was on the trainer vs outside.

If I still feel discomfort in a few more months, I may try the V-flow, especially if I plan on doing longer distances.
