how often do you guys (or have you) skipped workouts during this IMLP training?

Too effing many in the last few weeks. Take a look at my logs; my volume drops off like it went off the ski jump at Placid. My chest is still pretty sore since the fall but I am slowly getting back into things. Had another minor setback when my wife was admitted to the hospital (after we spent Sunday night in the ER with no sleep). Thankfully she's home now, but not out of the woods quite yet. Could use prayers, or good vibes, or voodoo, or whatever your personal beliefs lead you to do in situations like this.

Thanks!

Sucks right now man. How about I just give you a "good job!" as you are flying by me on the course at LP :-)

Just remembered to schedule a bike fit adjustment and tune up... I wanted to get it done at least a month out so I could have some time to work out any kinks. They are seriously booking up fast at the LBS this time of year.

Me too ...

Pretty amped to be heading up to Placid in the morning for training camp this weekend as a tag-along with the Train-This crew. Weather has been off and on as to if it was going to rain on Saturday. Either way, the weather can change in a second up there. I'm hoping the excitement of actually being there wakes my body up from the achy tiredness funk its been in.

So what are your main workouts that you feel are a must for these last 3+ weeks before taper?

For me it is my hard interval swim, long run, tempo ride and long ride. I have tried and will continue to try to make sure I get those in. Obviously there are a lot more workouts but these are 4 must haves for me.

Hey man, hang in there.  This too shall pass.  And, yeah, my personal beliefs are a connection to God through swimming, biking and running.  So I'll be sure to do lots of SBR for you the next few days

On the missing a workout here and there topic, like Jay, Dan and Mike has said -- from everything I've been told and read, the Key Workouts are, well, errr... Key   I try not to miss those workouts.  Kind of like wheh I marathon train, the Long Run is the bread & butter of marathon training.  If you miss a mid-week workout here and there, it likely will have a very small affect.  Sometimes missing a mid-week workout and getting some Rest instead makes me have a better Long Run or Long Bike (Key Workout) so perhaps it can be a positive.

I was all ready for a 2.5 hour Long Run today, and it's thundering, lightning and pouring rain out.  Over the next 4 weeks I am going to make it a point NOT to miss any workouts and try to nail all my Key Workouts.  Having said that, I skipped a Bike workout yesterday due to work.  Such is life

for me, I would have 4 key w/o's:

-Long swim (4500-5000) with a main set of hard intervals.

Long run with race specific sets

Mid week long ride with race specific sets

weekend long ride.

spaced out, it would probably looks like:

Mon or Tuesday, long swim

Thursday, Mid weed Ride

Saturday, long ride

Sunday, long run

so, much like you doc....

Sat 56mile ride at chilled(ish) pace then 20m run.  Sun 60mile chilled ride.  I got my first long run in last Sunday and it felt good - 21m round central park.

I was told it is key to get in a few of century rides in before the day which is fine cause i tended to do those before i ever considered doing an IM.  I`m sticking to the same marathon training plan i did for NYC last year.  A couple at the 20m mark (more to get the legs used to the pounding).  Next Sat is going to be the biggest day when i tackle the full bike and 1/2 marathon at Placid.

Any advice please (do not have a coach) and I tend to go off what I think and what I read.  Are these work outs too big?  I ran this past a mate who did Kona in 10hrs and he suggested that (for me and my goal) it was a good idea to get these BIG bricks in.   Anyone see anything wrong with this plan?  I listen to my body.  Come race day i`m aiming for a 12-13 hr day.  I know we have individual goals so i`m giving you mine to add perspective to my specific question.  Not trying to deter anyone from their individual plans.

your logs are empty.....hard to say if its too much without having an idea of what you;ve been consistently doing.

I would think you'd be OK......dont be affraid to break them up....bike the full loop, rest (eat+nap) than run.

I dont think you need a 2 hour run off a 112 mile bike in training.....if you are going to run 2 hours, run fresh as to get the most benefit from it.

now is the time to look at what you have been doing, add in some race specific intensity and staying consistent.

nothing wrong with an 8-10 hour day, provided it doesnt shell you and take 5-7 days to get back to normal training.

i've got a 4.5 hour ride tomorrow with about 90 min of Z4/5 intervals sprinkled in followed by 3 hours of intensive yard work.  i've been ignoring my little patch of earth the last few weekends and it's starting to resemble Jurassic Park!  Sunday is a slightly more mellow brick followed by whatever my wife tells me to do.

Hey guys...I'm feeling better. Now I just have the sniffles and some throat scratchyness left. I walked my long run time yesterday because I was still feeling a bit crappy but wanted to get some time in--almost 15km in 2:15 and I must say I'm sorer from the walk then I would have been had a ran the time yesterday! Haha. It was a good walk though up the big hills...so I guess I'll be good for LP if I need to walk some of the hills?

My weekend will be a bit interesting. I'm travelling back to Edmonton for my physiatry elective this weekend.

Fri--PM--swim-45min, bike-1hr---driving part of the way and staying overnight

Sat--AM--10km run, PM--10km run--driving the remaining 8hrs in between

Sun--6hr long ride + 45min T-run (it looks like it is going to pour though...6hr trainer ride?...we'll see...I might have to suck up and ride outside for a bit anyways...or AM--3hr trainer--45min run--PM-- 3h trainer)

Might have to have myself a 6hr True Blood marathon on Sun if the weather is going to be uncooperative....I have mixed emotions about that....

Ran 4.7 miles non stop, all on pavement. 8:37 avg with all negative splits. It only hurt when I breathed

Thanks for all the support guys. I hate coming here and whining but I know you all understand. Funny the talk has gotten around to missing workouts and key workouts. I missed a long bike and a long run so far, and a couple of longish swims. My plan has the long ride/run every other week and long swims almost every week. This weekend I have a long ride and next weekend a long run. It's the last long run on the schedule but there is one more long bike. I am open to rearranging to make sure I have enough key (long) workouts in before taper time. Is a long run on the 9th/10th weekend too close to race day?

Hey mrbrad - glad you are back on it - breathing is overrated anyway I ran into a friend today that had a very similar freaky low-speed incident that sounds really similar to yours, except she wound up bruising her spleen really badly - so I guess it could be worse, right? It is crazy how the wackiest things can take you out. Really glad to hear your wife is back at home - i got all kinds of Positive mojo headed your way!

Hey peewee, I am pretty fortunate in that I can get all my volume in during the week, so that lets me have somewhat of a "normal person" weekend. I raced last weekend, so that did shift my week a little bit, so on Saturday I have 3 hour hilly bike @ 75% FTP followed by a 1:15 endurance-pace hilly run. Sunday is an off day!

Master cusetri: Thanks for the info. I have not really added anything up to this (log / profile etc). Maybe I will tonight. Even my ugly face :-)

6226cheals: I can only assume that the people doing coer d`alene procrastinate more than we do…. I wonder if time spend writing to this site can be added as "research" and total training time = research + training. They are strong in the former and we are strong in the latter.
