I do "spin" as much as possible in the big ring when climbing, but there are times i run out of gears in the big ring. Guess I need to pay more attention to that little detail I told Kevin that I want a 1x. OK, not seriously but that technology has come a long way. |

Member 667 | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED Originally posted by TXTriRook Originally posted by amd723 Question for those who race hilly IM: do you use the big or small chain ring? I'm a big chain ring person since I'm more a masher than spinner, but am thinking I need to concentrate on more spinning up the hills so to save my legs for the run. How do you all roll?! I used to be a stand up and mash kinda guy but lately I've come to the realization that I have more energy for the crest/downhill after spinning out the hill in the small ring. I don't have a PM but my HR stays lower and while I'm sure there's no right way, spinning it out seems to work better for me. Speaking of hills....anyone have any intel/advice on the Boulder 70.3 hills? Looks like there are 2 pretty good ones from the athlete guide. I ride the route every time I'm outside so here's the low down: Bike mount is at the top of a little hill. Last year they changed it to the top of that little hill because mounting at the bottom of the hill wasn't working so well for people, haha. As you exit T1 and turn right onto Highway 119, it's a false flat for the first mile. However, when you make that U-Turn on 55th, you get some great speed going down 119! But then you get to take another U Turn on Oxford so that means another false flat to 63rd (not as bad as the first mile of the course, however). 119 can get very congested and there will be crazy people (jerks) here trying to pass. I've seen some nasty crashes here so please watch those around you! 63rd to Neva is a downhill then a short uphill before a little bit of a false flat into the Niwot/Neva turn. Niwot/Neva is the first big climb. It's 4.2 miles from the turn from 63rd up until you get to 36. The lower half of the climb is on Niwot road, which is just a steady 1-3% climb. I usually stay in around 53-21 here. Two miles into the climb, you're going to take a right and then a left turn. At .4 miles after the left turn, there will be a small downhill that you can get some speed that will then take you into the next little climb at .47 miles from that turn. At the top of this little climb, get as much speed as you can because from .75 miles from that left turn there is nothing but climbing for the last 1.2 miles! Incline ranges from 5% to 10% at the last .2 miles. I usually just spin in the small ring the last mile. You will turn right onto 36 and into a little bit of a climb. After that, there are some small inclines but nothing difficult. There is road construction going on here so be careful of the uneven pavement in a small section and some bumps. Catch some speed on Nelson and relax. (My top speed is 34 mph here and others fly by me. For some reason I don't get high speeds.) Consider yourself lucky as you go down Nelson - last year we went up it. In IM Boulder, we got to climb Nelson twice! Left onto 65th is a downhill right into a small climb. As soon as you get to the top of that climb there is a false flat and another small climb until St. Vrain. St. Vrain is like Niwot/Neva but there are no small downhill spots - the entire 3.1 miles is uphill. I switch to the small ring about 1 to 1.5 miles in here. Last mile ranges from 2%-10% grade. The worst of this climb starts at about 2.7 miles from the turn onto St. Vrain. Back on 36 is free speed to Highway 66! Right on Highway 66 takes you into the next 4 mile stretch. This is a good place to stay with it, but stand up in your saddle to just stretch a bit. Right onto 75th takes you into Hygiene. From here until you hit the railroad tracks is a negative incline so you can get a bit of speed. Although they've fixed the RR tracks, be careful going over them with your water bottles. 75th is a mix of negative incline with a few small climbs. One of the climbs is call the "Last Pain in the Butt" on Strava and it is a pain in the butt, haha. Very short, but a get out of your saddle instead of switching rings climb. As 75 turns into 73, there is also another climb that leads to a false flat on the top of the plateau before a section called "Whee!" which is a really small downhill. Say hi to Winston the Pig as you turn from 73 onto 71. He lives at the farmhouse at the stop sign where you'll turn. You then repeat the 119 section from the beginning of the ride before turning back into the Rez. You don't want to know what the run will be like. Trust me. Sorry this was so long, but I have a rest day today and I've already cleaned the house, haha! |

I'm going to memorize this so I have something to focus on during my ride. As for the run, from what I've read online it'll be hot but flat. This is a new bike course - it's actually part of one loop of the IM Boulder course, but without the third climb that even pros were walking their bikes up. The run is not flat. The first 2.8 miles have two big hills that you run. You start on pavement coming out of the Rez, but that turns into a dirt road on 51st/55th. Both hills are about .5 miles long and go up to a 5% incline. At the top of 55th, you turn right onto another dirt road, Monarch, which is a mile long (this is where I do mile repeats). At the end of Monarch you will turn right onto 63rd, which is pavement. You will see the heat rising from the pavement as you get closer to 63rd. It was at this turn that I somehow ended up in a police car last year, haha. The section on 63rd is .7 miles long and is hotter than hell. Then you turn right back onto the Rez access road which is dirt again. As you make your way around the Rez, watch for the rocks that grab your feet and make you trip right in front of the camera man (2016 - he caught my entire fall and sent it to me). Last section of the Rez goes back to asphalt before you start the second loop. If it's going to be hot make sure you put ice on your head, in your jersey, or anywhere else. Before last year, I put my hat in the kiddie pool they had full of ice water at the first aide station. Last year they didn't have that and I paid for it. My biggest piece of advice to you is plan on getting there when transition opens at 4:30 Last year people had to get out of their cars and run to make it into T1 before they closed it because traffic was a nightmare. They are only allowing people with stickers you get at Athlete Check-in this year so that may cut down on the traffic, but I would still give yourself at least 30 minutes to get into the Rez. |

Master 6595 Rio Rancho, NM | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED Well my debut in the Senior Olympics went about as I expected. It was hot and I was untrained for the swim and bike but it was a fun experience. It was pretty rinky-dink. No timing chip, not even a bib, just a number written on both arms and both legs and manual timing. The course copied a local tri I'd done years ago. The biggest problem with that one was we were on major roads and they were not closed, same issues yesterday. I was stopped twice for traffic. There was a decent sized hill on the bike, but I anticipated that. They started us at 8:30 and sent a swimmer off every 15 seconds. I was mid pack so I started about 8:45 and the last swimmers didn't start till about 9:00 that put us out there for the run when it was getting pretty hot. Because there was no timing company I left there without an official time but my Garmin had me at just under 2 hours. I didn't expect to be quite that slow but I'll take it. I am now qualified for the National Senior Olympics which will be held in Albuquerque in 2019. I just hope they put a bit more effort in to that one or NM will have huevos on its face. |

I know I can get round the 1500m swim as worst case can do breaststroke plus wetsuit should help out. What tips can you guys give me on what and how to do it. Bike is easy as it is flat as a pancake and closed roads and so is the run, can do the distances separately. I know I can complete it and if I had actually trained like I should of then I would have had a time goal but not that bothered about time. Note to self train instead of watching every game of the world cup on the sofa!! Still super excited about it though and can't wait for Sunday to come round. |

Still super excited about it though and can't wait for Sunday to come round. you could treat this just as a good training day and try for training paces for each discipline. Sometimes i think a flat bike course is worse than one with a few hills as you get no reprieve - you must pedal at all times. So, if you out bike your bike fitness thinking the course is easy, you will feel it on the run! Of course, depending on how much you are willing to suffer, instead of doing training paces, you can push it and just try to hang on during the run. So, my great advice is to either treat the whole race as a long training day or go all out and see if you can hang on until you blow up. your welcome |
