I use Continental GP4000s, both training and racing.  I have no idea what my wheel is.   Stock on the bike.  If I did get new wheels though they would be light weight climbing wheels and not aero.  Unless I struck it rich, then I'd get both

I use Vitorria Open Corsa Evo's for racing.  404 set if road racing or in Kona, or 404/disc covered training wheel for all other races.  I do have a set of 202 tubulars (also with Vitorria Corsa's) that I'll use for climbing only bike races.

Training, I use Serfas Survivor Series tires.  Wire bead clinchers that are ultra durable, but slow as molasses.  Last year I had to switch back to Continental GP4000S for training just so I wouldn't get dropped on hard group rides, but I'm hoping I can stick with these tires for the whole year in training.

I use Gatorskins on my Reynolds Solitude wheels...because of all the thorns here in the desert. I race on those same wheels/tires but I am thinking of trying to get some race wheels this year. I have 650s so I am hoping to get a good deal.

ChrisM - 2013-02-06 7:16 PM I mean more generally, I guess the categories would be spoked, tri spoke, or disc

I've never ridden on a tri spoke or a true disc, just spoked wheels with a cover on the rear and a Flo 60 up front (which is just a regular spoked wheel with a fairing).

I have found that good tires with latex tubes makes a big difference in comfort and speed.  I remember the first time I put them on my wife's bike before a race and the first thing she said to me after the ride was "Why the @%!& didn't you do that sooner?"

They are great at letting you know that you need to replace your rim tape...

Race wheels are zipp 808/1080 tubulars. I run zipp Tangentes which are made by Vitoria and are supposedly similar in ride and cr to the corsa cx, but grip and corner like gp4000s. They have latex tubes, and of course they are dimpled, which is EXTREMELY importantant.... They seem to be very tough. The only time I have flatted one is when I ran over another cyclist at 2011 IMLP.

I train on Gatorskins now. Previously it was some tougher Specialized tires. Roubaix maybe? Not the armadillos. Training wheels are some Mavic Ksyrium Elites.

Last year I was racing mostly on the Conti Attack/Force combo with latex. Seemed to do well. Did flat when I picked up a staple once. Technically twice, but I didn't pull it out the first time. Really like them, but wish they were a touch slimmer. I race with SRAM S80 wheels which are essentially older Zipp design. They might do a little more aero with a thinner tire, but handle this better than the S60 does from what I've heard.

Late season the year before I used some Specialized Mondo Open Tubular. When I had those with latex I could finally feel a difference in the ride. Those things were so nice. Real shame that Specialized stopped making them as that was the fastest clincher on BikeTech review. Not sure if their newer ones are as fast. Continental is really doing well with their selection though.

Yes.  I burned through 3 latex tubes (the last three within 50 miles, as it turned out) before I figured this out last fall for IMWI (I'm slow...).

I race on the Specialized Mondo Open Tubular on latex tubes (when I don't slit them all), which I love.  Not sure what I'll use when these wear out, but for now they're fine.

I train on whatever is lying around the house and doesn't have a hole in it or feel like it's about to (they become trainer tires).

Welcome Rob...great to have another sunbelt pup in this group. I grew up running in Florida but been in Texas quite a while now. The suns more powerful out here.

I just took Monday and Tuesday off....just because I could. well...I ran an biked hard last weekend. Currently using an "untraining program" just been getting out there and doing it.

kina funny vid about "us" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KTEgLKhjIw

Thanks, I'll have to look at the video later, I lived in Texas for five years (for masters program) It was like running in an oven it was weird. Totally different type of heat.  What part of Texas you in? I was in Ft. Worth/Dallas area. I love Naples, its like training paradise. During summer I run inside alot and swim of course.

Currently I am riding (which I haven't done since December) on Gatorskins. I have a pair of Michelins that I have raced on, but the Gatorskins are kinda my goto. I might end up with ArmadilloSkins next, since some of the roads I'm riding are a bit worn. I'll have to look a bit more at the Michelins. Mavic wheels that came on the bike, which is a 2006(?) Fuji Team SL.

Hi Rob, welcome.

Well, there is a huge Nor'Easter coming in and I'm heading up to VT shortly. Undecided Not the best timing unless you're a skier, which Im not. I do have snow shoes and cross country skis up there, so there will be some outdoor fun. I guess I'd better pack a few extra things, including trainer and bike as I may be there longer than planned. I'm really ready for winter to be over.

I've been riding with Vittoria Rubino Pro Slicks on spoked wheels -- they came stock on the bike, so that's what I've used.  I like them, but really haven't ridden on anything else, so have no basis for comparison.  Also, I figure that I have bigger gains to make by working on my engine than I do changing tires (wheels, helmets, etc).

Ran last night and felt some twinging and a bit of pain in my right achilles - I've never had  that before.  This morning I can feel it a bit while walking around the office, and it's tender to touch in one spot.  Suggestions on what to do?  I've had all sorts of aches and pains in my legs, but this is brand new.

While training is always important, and working on having the biggest engine you can is the path to success, wise equipment decisions do not exclude working on the engine.

For example, I've tested my road bike (hoods) versus my tribike and the position on my tribike (everything else held constant) is about 7.5s/km. When I add in all my race day goodies, I can also gain:

Tires/tubes - 1.0s/km
Aero helmet - 1.0s/km
Deep front/disc rear - 2.5s/km
Skinsuit - 0.5s/km

So, these result in another 5s/km saved - this would require an increase of about 50W which, while possible, is going to require a great deal of riding.
