OMG, I just want to LICK Crowie from bottom to top (or vice versa, whichever way he prefers). I think he is the hottest man on Earth. I bought his book when I was in Oz and it is very reasonable for such a high-quality coffee table book--the photographs are out of this world as are the blood sweat and tears in words of his daily, family, and racing life. |

I thought I escaped the norovirus or whatever stomach bug the rest of my family had. I even managed to run today!! Sadly, I did not. Now I am miserable. I hope this at least counts as a core workout. Yes it does, and I'm soooo sorry! Ugh. |

Veteran 416 Cleveland, Tennessee | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! So I pushed my temperature bragging rights "down" today. It was -31F outside and I only got a 1.75miles run in at those temps. I thought of showing off how few clothes I was wearing but figured these would be sufficient.

I made mango salsa today, but had to cut down on jalapenos to suit visitor's taste buds. Probably wouldn't warm you up much. So I pushed my temperature bragging rights "down" today. So, there are just a couple of temps I can keep track of in F. One is 32F, I know that is 0C. The other is -40C, which is -40F, which is pretty darn close to -31F. Which is pretty froggin' cold. You, sir, have my respect! Nice job getting that run in. |

Veteran 416 Cleveland, Tennessee | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! A question for the runners in the pod. I am going to be having a PT test in about 4-8 weeks. It is actually an easy test of 2 min of push-ups, sit-ups and a 2 mile run. I am obviously not worried about the run, but to a degree I am. The distance is obviously not an issue, I worry more about speed. I have to do it under 17:36 which is relatively easy. But my question is what would be the best way to look at "handling" it. I normally switch gears about 1-2 weeks before by doing some speed work of 8 x 400's a couple of times before the test. I am wanting to get others inputs. I have trouble sometimes shifting gears from endurance to speed, so the intervals the week before greatly help me. I am thinking this time of doing a tempo run once a week of 1-3 miles. Then the last week or two doing some limited speed work of 8x400's or so. This will probably be mostly on the treadmill. I am thinking a 5-10 min warm-up then moving into the tempo realm. Suggestions appreciated. |

ICE NINJA! That is one awesome profile photo. I am (was) dragging my feet about doing a long run (3:00) out there in 92 F, v high humidity no wind ... then I checked in here and saw you and decided to HTFU. |

If my training sessions are starting to get longer than an hour should I be starting to look at nutrition? Currently I have just been having water and I am still feeling ok with that. But my A race for the season is an Oly in April, I think that I will need more than water to get through that at this stage I think I will be looking at it taking me about 3.5 hours. |

Personally, I don't take in anything other than water until I go over the 2 hr mark. Nutrition is pretty individualized, but if I were doing a race where I expected to be finishing around 3.5 hrs I would have a bagel for breakfast ( usually Cin raisin ), then at about an hour into the race I take in about 100 calories and an hour later another hundred etc. I generally only drink water as mixing too much stuff can lead toan upset GI for me. Obviously, you should practice your nutrition to see what works for you. |

But, think of this more ad a graded event. The 17:36 is a passing grade, the high side for my age is 13:18. I know I will not hit the high side this test, but I would love to be in the mid 15's. I normally end up in the low 16's.jbwills - 2013-01-26 11:32 PM If you are describing the 17:36 as relatively easy I probably wouldn't change anything. A question for the runners in the pod. But my A race for the season is an Oly in April, I think that I will need more than water to get through that at this stage I think I will be looking at it taking me about 3.5 hours. For my first Oly I did a gel after the swim (30 min or so) another the the bike halfway point (about 45min later) then a gel in transition. This tended to be enough for me, might have been overkill, but it was my first Tri. I did that Oly in 3:08 so close-ish to the time you are thinking. But again, nutrition is personal. Start working on things now to see how it impacts you. Including Pre-race/Pre-training meal. |

I have read that you should start taking in calories at the 1 hour mark. I changed 1 of my water bottles to gatorade at first and would alternate between sips of water and sips of gatorade. I probably take in way to many calories, but my stomach can handle it. Fire todays race, I will have 2 gatorade bottles and 1 water bottle on me since I am going to be racing hard. I definitely recommend you start adding calories, whether liquid, gel, or solid and se how your body reacts. |

Master 1970 Somewhere on the Tennessee River | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! Warmed up with 15 minutes of upper body weights and then went and ran 6 miles in 52:45. We will see how my foot does this afternoon. Even though most of my training is Zen, I do on nights of the full moon, time myself. Helps to correlate real perceived effort with times. Remember, these days, distance running is my weakest event. I think I did good.
Time to get cleaned up and make brunch. |

Seattle | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! jbwills - 2013-01-27 9:50 AM Not sure if your logs are acurate, but if they are I would hesitate to recommend 400 repeats. You don't want 'fast' stuff to exceed say ... Ten percent of your overall mileage. Even then, you need to be careful not to do those repeats at an all out pace. I think you can go ahead and do the tempo as you suggested but be careful not to push too hard. Passing with a lower grade sounds a lot better than hurting yourself and not being able to do it at all.Asalzwed - 2013-01-26 10:32 PM Yes, I do mean then 17:36 is relatively easy. Master 6595 Rio Rancho, NM | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! Well I had my first bike vs car close call today. Plan called for a three hour ride so I planned to ride up to the dam and back for the first hour then drop down in to town and climb up the mountain for the next hour or so then head back. Well the climb to the dam went well (got 2nd on KOM on Strava) then I had one of my new home-made rice cakes (bought the Feed Zone cookbook this weekend, love it) and set my sights on the mountain. Well as I got to the main intersection in town a car decided to turn left right in front of me. I always sit up going through intersections and when I'm on a road with little or no shoulder and I only use such areas to get to someplace safer. Well the car paused so I thought (silly me) that he was going to yield. DH thinks the pause was to make sure I saw the driver so he could take right of way. So he turned in front of me and I hit the brakes, the bike got squirrelly but I kept it rubber side down. I pulled in to the next available parking lot to calm down and realized my rear brake was way loose. At they point I scrapped the ride. I was shakey and figured riding up and down the mountain with one good brake was a bad idea. Thought I'd finish on the drainer, but I don't think that's gonna happen. I'm ok, just shaken up. |
