Originally posted by 4agoodlife So I didn't try wetsuit last night, but got my butt in the pool with my LAVA pants. When I tried them last week I just couldn't get a feel for them...at all. Felt like I was fighting my legs (probably a sign of how bad my form is, I know). Last night I relaxed more and let the pants position me like they're supposed to .I found my hips rotating more/better and my head lower. Now I'm back on track for three swims a week.

Was wondering about these.  Still too soon to tell, or thumbs up/down?

Matt

But there are no orange ones!!!

This brings up a SERIOUS race dilemma:  I always wear some orange when racing (from some to kind of a lot).  Buuuuut, our race this weekend is on the cusp of St. Patrick's day.  Just outside of Boston.  I'm a Mc.  And I don't want to get stabbed on route - seriously.  (not many people wear orange here around the 17th, even though it's part of the flippin' flag - too dangerous)

So, you think I can get away with rockin' the orange kicks (Saucony Mirage) if I wear a green long sleeved tech shirt?  Do I need a shamrock painted on my chrome dome?  Green frosted eyebrows???  Leprechaun outfit????

The important issues of our times…

Matt

ORANGE!!! You traitor!!! . Of course, I'm sure you know that the green on the Irish flag stands for the Catholics and the orange the Protestants and the white between them represents the supposed unity between them for the freedom, unity and benefit of Ireland. However, when irish see orange they think of the Orangemen , a group that celebrate william of orange and his defeat of the catholic king of Ireland at the battle of the Boyne. This was one of the key events that led to centuries of oppression and genocide of Ireland's Catholics . It's kind of a touchy subject . So, while I think you'd be ok with orange shoes, I wouldn't wear anymore orange than that! Especially in Boston where there is such a strong irish catholic contingent.

and that concludes today's history lesson

Reminds me of the old Irish Rovers' song, "The awful color problem of the orange and the green!"

My surname is McManus, but my mother's maiden name starts with Mac.     The Better Half is English/Irish.

Talk about tense Thanksgiving dinners.      Good thing we're descended of Vikings on both sides, as they're a particularly calm lot…  Wait, what?

Next weekend, I'll be all Irish, though!

Matt

Manatees, I have a 10k in 2 weeks.  I'm not sure that I want to do it.  I really haven't trained for it.  Last year, I ended up getting the shin splints that started a stress fracture or a stress fracture because I was in the same position and decided to go out anyway.  I had a hard time holding myself back and ran too hard.  I would really like to avoid that again this year.  It's also the same day as my fitness class.  That's not a reason on its own to skip the race, but it does push me to not doing it with the other factors.

So, what do I do? Do I get a pass?  Do I suck it up and walk a ton?

Originally posted by laffinrock Thanks to everybody for the welcome! Artemis, I voted for you. Wow, there are some UGLY kits there. Love your Garmin-'gyle "sleeves"! Stacey, congrats on the new babies. Puppy breath x 12 = wow! Yanti, congrats on the wedding plans! I'm honored that you took the time out of your busy schedule to let me join the pod. Now to bed. This daylight savings time thing always throws me off. My brain seems to think it's only 9:30 so there's no reason to be sleepy and my body will vigorously disagree with the notion that 6:30 really means 6:30, despite the lack of dog in my face. The beasts seem to take their cues from the sun and let me sleep an "extra" hour this morning before launching their attacks. I'm sure they'll happily resume their alarm clock augmentation duties soon. 'Night all. m

Thanks!!  Despite how ugly that outfit is, I adore those sleeves.  That was the year Garmin had the awesome argyle jerseys.  I couldn't afford a jersey, but the sleeves were in my budget.  I just ordered a blue jersey that will actually go with them.

Watched Taylor spend a couple of muddy hours on his dirtbike; spent this morning hiking/running the mountains just north of us; tried on my new suit...in the shower while Jason gave me pointers on fit. I think I finally got it close, but need to try in pool soon. Such a strange feeling...makes me very glad it's sleeveless!

How does it feel? Sleeveless is usually easier to figure out as the shoulders are the most critical and most difficult to size right.

At first I thought it would choke me.   I'm VERY glad it's sleeveless.

I think I can get legs up another 1/2 inch to give body a little more room, but felt like it was a good first try-on. And getting in the shower did loosen it up a bit, so my shoulders didn't feel so pulled down or neck tight. Now I'm curious how it will feel actually swimming in it.

That sounds like it fits right.  It may have been slightly dehydrated from the shipping and getting to you.  It will feel a lot better once you are swimming, but definitely try it out before the race a few times if you can.

Ann-Marie summed up what I was going to say.  I wear green, but I'm (ethnically) and Irish Catholic.  No orange in this house!

Related: Last year, I had E in green on St. Patrick's day and I wore it too, of course.  My husband wasn't, so I pinched him.  He'd never heard that leprechauns pinch you if you're not wearing green!! Blasphemy!!

Would walking a 10K be fun for you? It wouldn't be for me, so I would not do it.

If you are at all worried about hurting yourself or think that walking a bunch of the 10k would be boring for you then I would skip it.

Yes, those calm Vikings!  I have nothing but Irish blood in me (one of my brother's is  even the irish consul for Florida) so I've heard my fair share of irish rebel songs and no whenever anyone mentions cromwell's name I'm supposed to say, "bad sess to him"! and if i ever see his grave I must spit on it

I'm sitting here listening to our beautiful Yanti's beautiful voice: http://doughboytoironman.com/2014/03/10/ironman-year-one-episode-22-comeback-queen-yanti-ardie-on-life-after-dnf/

Her interview doesn't start right away, I fast forwarded through the hosts' banter.  As always, her wonderful spirit and view of the world shines bright.

Hi everyone!

I know I've been scarce around these parts for a while, but hoping that I can come back?

I've caught up on all the shenanigans, puppies, weddings (WOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!), races, AG placing, PRs, job interviews (good luck Kate!), BT improvements... or lack thereof, etc.

And all I can really say is..... I've missed you guys, bless your hearts!

Me and Wifey are off over to Dublin for a few sherbies this weekend to join in the St Patricks Day celebrations. Only seems right seems he's the most celebrated Welshman in the world.

It might just be me and my old-timey soul but I LOVE the new Brooks heritage collection:

Matt

Yes, those calm Vikings!  I have nothing but Irish blood in me (one of my brother's is  even the irish consul for Florida) so I've heard my fair share of irish rebel songs and no whenever anyone mentions cromwell's name I'm supposed to say, "bad sess to him"! and if i ever see his grave I must spit on it

Me and Wifey are off over to Dublin for a few sherbies this weekend to join in the St Patricks Day celebrations. Only seems right seems he's the most celebrated Welshman in the world.

Indulge me. Whatsa sherbie.

I think I'd rock the gold ones. They wouldn't be for racing, so it's ok that there isn't orange

Yep. I figured those would be your choice. Feelin' Solid Gold 80s!

I like the purple ones.  And the grey with green.  But, I am not nearly as flashy as Salty.

As a jeans a t-shirt kinda gal, I am flattered by this once in a lifetime comment

Oh hey there! Welcome back!

Matt

They've had good reviews from newer tri-ers. I've also seen a lot of making fun of them from "serious" people. We got them as a good bundle deal (sleeveless wetsuit, LAVA pants, and tri bag for $180), and living in AZ having a 1/2 suit and sleeveless is about all we'll need for "cold" races.

To answer question, I am a bad swimmer and don't care how goofy I look in the pool.   After two swims, I can say I felt a difference last night vs how my body moved in water a few months ago. I'm going to reserve complete judgment until I've worked out in them for a couple of weeks...and done some swimming without them. The end result I want is to not rely on them, but use them to train my body to feel where it's supposed to be.
