Can I ask the group (please each chime in) what you plan to use to pace your HIM or IM?

1. The swim? have you done a 500 yard or 1,000 yard (or meter) Time trial? If not I would suggest doing this at some point to get an idea of pacing. It's hard to pace during the actual OWS, but after sometimes you can look at results and see if you paced roughly correctly (assuming distance measured semi-ok)

2. Bike? RPE, HR, Power, Pace? Do you use any of these and what are your thoughts?

I think what I'm getting at is discussing PACING which is appropriate for your fitness would be a great discussion today.

Please EVERYONE chime in. I'm interested

1.  Interestingly I have a 1000yd TT next weekend on my plan, but up to this point I have not done one.

2. On the bike I will be using HR.  I would love to have a Powertap, but cannot afford one at this time.  I don't particularly like using HR, but it is all I have.  My goal is to figure out a % of FTP based on training rides & BRICKS to determine how hard to ride in HIM.  As a first timer it will be a nothing more than a good guess.

docswim24 - 2011-04-14 9:31 AM I find the sweet spot on rest/still working very hard is something like this: 100's: 10-15 seconds rest 200's: 20 seconds rest 300's and up: 25-30 seconds rest My guess is that your TT is a little faster than 1:47 and/or you have the ability based on your 100 times of 1:34-1:36 to quickly get your TT time faster than 1:47/100. I would shoot for doing 100's @ 1:55 first time out and if that is too easy drop it to 1:50. Not that 1:55 will feel easy but if you can do it and get 15 or seconds or more rest consistently after every 100, drop it down to 1:50 and see if you can make it.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I may just do a 1000 TT tomorrow instead of the OWS I had planned.  I got 1:47 based on a lot of assumptions and inferences...I really have no clue what my 1000 TT time would be in a pool.

But I think you're right.  I could probably do 10x100 on 1:55.  We'll see how the TT goes.  Glad this topic got brought up.  I was avoiding intervals like the plague...but I realize now that I need to go back to them if I want to get better.

Ok...I'm just throwing this out there to keep myself accountable.  My diet has been pretty bad the past 3-4 weeks.  And despite putting in very hard training...I've gained about 2 pounds.  I weigh myself daily in the morning, and while I don't worry about the day to day fluctuations, I do take notice of my overall weight fluctuations in 1-2 week blocks.

I should be around 156-157 by now, and am hovering in the high 150's...and want to get to around 153 by June.  It's just a matter of better eating habbits on my part.  I will never starve myself...but eating peanut butter sandwiches before bed is not a very good idea.

Ok...I feel better now.

Ya, crackers and drive by bites of the kid's hot dogs don't help either.  I'm right there with you, and I'm ON THE DIET STRAIGHT AND NARROW (just as soon as we get back from spring break vacay)...

Some great swim advice here!

One workout I seem to get from my coach a lot is to speed up the end of a given set.

ie; 5x200 with the first 150 at a moderate pace, then the last 50 much faster. Then rest :20-:30.

I've also done a lot of this:
500 steady at 1:30 pace
Then 5x100 at 1:20 pace

400 steady at 1:30 pace
Then 4x100 at 1:20 pace

aand so on until I hit 100.

This is a workout I want to try too!

Don't feel too bad. I've been eating leftover pizza all week then my in-laws stopped by with fried chicken for dinner last night.  At least I don't have any chicken leftover. My son ate 4 pieces for lunch today! Then he ran around me in circles while I was riding the trainer outside. I realized I must be reading too many barefoot running threads when I caught myself analyzing his barefoot technique. He has a natural mid foot strikeWink.

Got in an easy run at lunch today, and a moderately hard ride after work.  Nothing too crazy, so I think my legs should be pretty good for Saturday.  I'll do another easy 40 minute run tomorrow, then swim after work with the 1000y TT in there.

Just did a quick 3 miles run -- much better than yesterday's t-run, running in the dark at 6 a.m. makes the run much more pleasant.  5-6 hour bike on tap and then another 40 minute T run.  Its going to be interesting biking in the heat all day, my body is just not used to it yet.

Basically a rest day for me... I'll likely do a few hundred in the pool just to stretch out a bit, but nothing beyond cruising....  Moderate bike and long run this weekend.

I've got a 1.5 hour ride and a 30 min run. Weather is calling for T-Storms and hubby will be gone for the next 2 days again. Looks like I'm stuck on the trainer and treadmill for the day.

On another note, I have some issues with chaffing/bruising from my 2.5 hour ride on Wednesday. That was my longest ride on the tri bike so far. I thought it might help if I ride my roadie today. Any other suggestions? Creams or anything? I'll be in town so I can stop by the bike shop. I am determined to get through this bike specific week of my training plan one way or another. I have a ride on the schedule for tomorrow too.

Fred Doucette - 2011-04-15 5:07 AM

I'm off for a swim and then a busy work day. I won't be around as much today on the site.

What's on for training today?

Easy 5 mile run at lunch and then my first swim meet in a very long time tonight. Doing the 1650 and will be pacing it like I would an Oly swim. Tomorrow morning is the first race of the year!

Neosporin is great to fix any chafing, body glide is great to prevent any chafing.

I have one more pacing question - when running an open HM, do you pace based on HR or actual pace?  Currently I'm looking to run my HM in May at a 4:30-4:35/km pace (7:14-7:24/mile for you imperial types).  I'm figuring that this should land me in Zone 4, but I'm not sure how long it will take before the HR gets there.

I have run my open HMs on pace for the first 2-3 miles to make sure I am not going out to fast and then by feel and HR after that.

I run by RPE and, in the early miles, check pace to make sure I'm not kidding myself.
