Out running or enjoying a fine glass of red...
Subject: RE: DOWN for the Holidays!
Strength training - done
Good eating day - done
Quiet time - well, I took a different tack on quiet time; instead of spending it with myself, I spent a long time tonight snuggling with each of my daughters. So many nights are spent running to soccer, running to dance, running to piano, running to running...there hasn't been time to just BE with them. It may not have been the challenge, but it grounded me and was what I needed tonight.

And now I am enjoying a really nice glass of red wine, contemplating heading off to bed to read a novel and go to bed early. (Husband is switching between the World Series (baseball is boring) and the Clemson-Wake game (not my teams)).

You can also just go to the market an pick at least one fruit or veggie that you have never tried!

Now that is a bold idea. I will roll the dice on that one next time I go to the grocery store.

A word of warning...if your new veggie of choice = swiss chard...rinse. Rinse. Rinse. Rinse. Rinse. Rinse. Rinse. And rinse some more.

Last summer some swiss chard came in my coop order. I found a great recipe from Giada for chicken swiss chard enchiladas. Cleaned the chard. Cooked the dinner.

It was like eating a beach. EWWWWWWW!

I still haven't managed to go back to swiss chard.

My biggest problem is repetition.  When I'm trying to eat well, I end up eating the same thing every day for breakfast, snack, lunch and afternoon snack.  The only variation is my dinner.  Then comes the day where I just don't want that yogurt and koshi cereal...hello hamburger...or pizza.

I really need to learn some variation in my eating habits.  Any suggestions?

Day 2 of waking up and getting my workout done before work! 1000 in the pool at lunch today.

I'll cook up some ground turkey breast, onions, & mushrooms and keep in the fridge.  Mix it in with some egg whites, stirfry with whatever veggies you have on hand, or my favorite is to mix it with tomato sauce and serve over steamed broccoli slaw instead of pasta.  Good stuff!  I also keep a list of basic items that are "clean" by my desk and when I'm hungry and don't know what to fix, I'll look at it for ideas.  Hungry Girl has some great ideas for lower calorie versions of popular items (but not always clean ones)  You can still get good ideas though.  If I'm really stuck for something to eat, I'll grab an apple and a handful of nuts or a single serve string cheese.

AbbieR - 2012-10-25 4:48 PM Cooking....those of you who have known me for a while, know that the kitchen is that room in the apartment where I store my water bottles.  I usually eat eggs/egg whites for at least one if not 2 meals a day (typically I eat 4-5x a day), but I'm working on it!  I recently started getting a box of organic produce delivered to my house, usually there are veggies in there I have to actually read the box description to even know what they are!  This week I got bok choy and kale as part of the box.  Now I will search for recipes that include these things.  You can also just go to the market an pick at least one fruit or veggie that you have never tried!

bok choy is great in stir fry recipes.  I have seen it in most Asian cook books, no matter the specific nationality.  Stir fried it in a Chinese recipe.....baked it with a Cietnamese one.....Fun

Judi, could you post some of your Asian recipes sometime?  I confess to never having bought bok choy either!

This is the website I get most of my Vietnamese recipes from.  N has seemed to enjoy them and hadn't said that they are too Americanized .  My Chinese recipes are all in a bunch of different books.

The biggest news in my quest is that I have not had a soda in 5 days.  For anyone that knows me, they know that I am a massive carbonated beverage junkie.  I have found that drinking green tea helps to alleviate the cravings for a sugary drink.

Welcome!  I've gone about 6 weeks now without any soda... and I'm used to starting off my day with a 24 ounce Diet Pepsi and going from there.  One thing that's really helped (I'm still surprised at this) is drinking seltzer water with lemon in it ... the fizzy goodness does a good job at replacing the soda and I've found after an initial get-used-to-it period, I now actually enjoy the bite it has as opposed to being sugary sweet.

YMMV, of course, but this is the first time I've given up soda and don't crave it ... for the first time it's not taking up oodles of willpower to stay away.  Kind of a different feeling for me.

Count me in on this issue. I have been soda free for about 5 weeks now. I, when I am off the "wagon" will drink anywhere from 150-250 oz of soda a day. Start with two 20oz Mountain Dews with breakfast and drink it all day at work and right up til bedtime. Fall asleep no problem. But I know it is a huge weightloss hurdle for me so it had to go...again.

Hi everyone, I am late (as usual) but would love to get in on this challenge! Need to read back through the posts but here's my info:

NAME: Anne, 51 y.o.

Hi Anne!

Also, I finally changed my avatar (was a wedding photo, but I don't think I need that on there almost 6 months later) and I just put one up of myself with a piece of pie. HAHA. Key lime pie in Key West on my honeymoon.

My next big race is a full distance tri in Key West in January. Can't wait. This challenge is perfectly timed for me and can't wait to enjoy some Key Lime pie post race oh and drink at every bar in that town Innocent

abbie  whats with this water thing , i've never drank so much on a ride as i did tonight. 2 full bottles and still didnt make it home with water.  what did that 80oz challenge do to me?

LOL, maybe it;s your body telling you that you need to drink more water on a daily basis.

Good eating day for me although I did dive into my peanut butter jar way too much!  Grrr.

I have my yellow beets roasting in the oven

SODA.....Good for those of you who have given it up!  I gave up soda when I was 16 yrs-old and about 3 times a year after a long ride I will get a root beer or DR. Pepper, after about 3 sips, I'm done with it....just doesn't taste good to me.

There's a big Asian grocer not far from me and the upside is the veggies are SO cheap - lots of greens.  The downside is I have no clue what I'm buying half the time but if you get a chance - there are tons of different relatives of bok choy that are amazing.  Gai-choy is one of my favourites - it has a thick green stem and you can eat it with or without the leaves.  I just saute it with any sauce - coconut oil tastes yummy.  But just throw a bunch of veggies in with some oyster sauce or black bean sauce and YUM.  Just be aware of the sodium - it's high.

Went to a YIN class tonight and oh... ah... feeling SO relaxed.  I'm gonna sleep like a baby tonight.

Marcia,

I go to an Asian market with my exchange student and between us it will take us over 30 minutes to find the ingredients  for one meal.  THe produce isn't always labeled but it isn't hard.  Their prices are a LOT better than my local grocery store, but it is way out of my way to get to so I spend it in gas.  The other problem is prepackaged items such as various dried seasonings and different noodles are all in the language of the country it's from.  She can fine the Vietnamese items fine, I am LOST.  My next trip up will be to get ground pork and some seasonings to make a Vietnamese meatball.  I can't find ground pork at my local grocery store which is really strange in the south.

Today's nutrition and training log posted.

I'm feeling badly discouraged with my swim.  I have gotten my speed to a point I think is good.  I can pull 2:05 in the 100m again and again.  What I want to be able to do is turn a 2:05/100m for the entirety of an Oly swim.  I feel like I've hit a plateau, and I can't bust through it, with my swim endurance.
Meanwhile, I'm feeling better and better after every run and am adding distance.

Overall, my goal of dominating the Clyde division of the Breezy Point Triathlon in 2013 is beginning to seem daunting.  :-(

got a 45 minute run in tonight as flurries started to fall.

I am working on the carbonated beverages.  Cutting down from 2 - 3 rockstars to 1 mtn dew or dr pepper.  Next step is to drop that again (one time I went nearly a year without )

Yeah I have to be a all or nothing on this one. Once I go back, which sadly usually is the marathon course of an IM (love that flat coke or pepsi at that point in the day) I am hooked. I will have it with dinner after the race and the next day it is on like Donkey Kong.

It's like crack. I gave it up completely on January 1 and was fine, then after a race in May had a Diet Pepsi and it was all over after that.

Have a great holiday!  I love vacation runs - a great way to see new places.

So weigh in Friday and I'm down .6 from last week.  Let's just hope I can maintain it over the weekend!!

ME TOO!  I'm definitely all or nothing, certainly in respect to drinking soda, but most other things as well.  This is an article that finally explained to me WHY I'm like that ... why I can't be that person who has just a bite of chocolate every night, or just one soda every few days...

Friday weigh-in day!

It's been a good week for me ... surprisingly because I've been pretty stressed.

This summer I hit my highest weight in a long while -- 161 -- due to depression, stress and other such fun things.  I finally started to get my act together and control what I could (meaning: training and nutrition) and dropped a few pounds, bringing my weight down to about 158.  Another few weeks of that and when I started this challenge I was at 155.

This morning?  152.  Whodda thunk it??

I'm telling you - positive reinforcement/results are the best way to keep this stuff going.  If I can keep on track, I can still hit my goal of ending the year lighter than what I started at (149).

Thanks for all the encouragement!  You guys are great.
