I played lots of sports growing up, including summer swim team from age 5-17, but decided to stick with basketball when I got to high school. Graduated college, got fat, had a kid, realized I got fat, started getting active. Saw a local triathlon in my neighborhood in fall of 2014 and said to myself "I can do this!", then went home and told my wife I was going to do an Ironman. FAMILY STATUS: Married with two boys ages 3 & 5, & a 9 year old black lab. CURRENT TRAINING: LOTS. Just started base 2 of 3 (then 2 builds) for IMTX. THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: IMTX, will probably do an olympic leading up to IMTX. Will probably take a break then do some sprints in the fall. GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: Would like to lose 5 lbs of fat before IMTX, the heat can be real. Stretch goal is sub 11 hrs, will be disappointed if I don't break 12. WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: I have an obsessive/compulsive personality!

Kirsten, this is the one that made me snerk...

LOL!  Missed that one.  I keep laughing at the news this AM.  They are talking about new tax rules and anyone "married with 2 kids that make over $200 000" will pay an extra $11000 in taxes.  Ummm, what kinda child labour pays that kinda dough??

I have two kids but they don't make anywhere near that!

I'm such a weather wimp that I've actually suggested to Tony that if we move ANYWHERE from Austin, it'll have to be FL, because I can't handle winter anymore!  Not that I ever could, but now - definite NO to winter.  NO!

I'm in Dallas. Where are the other Texans in this thread from? My first 70.3 was in Austin back in November. Some of the hills down there were killers!

I'm in Austin & I also did the 70.3... it wasn't a stellar day for me, but we won't talk about that right now...

I *think* there's also Katy represented, and there was another Manatee in Austin, but I don't know where he went?  Are there other Texas Manatees??  Where in Canada are you from??  I'm from Vancouver & miss it a LOT, but not so much during the wet winter...  :D

We have a Manatee Strava group.  Let Chris or me know and we can add you.

My name is Eric and I have completed 11 or 12 triathlons in the past. Mostly Sprint or Super Sprint with 1 Olympic thrown in. I have always been active and played tennis in College. I was a pretty decent runner when I was younger and would ride my bike everywhere when I was a kid. I decided I wanted to try triathlon and while training for my first sprint I was hit by a Car on my bike (He decided to turn right even though I was there). It ended up breaking both elbows, my left wrist, and messing up my left leg really bad. The doctors said I would never be able to run again, and would hopefully be able to put off a knee replacement until I was around 40. I still really struggle on the run, but I have been able to do it, but I can not train as much as I would like, but sometimes you just need to be happy you can do it at all.

FAMILY STATUS: I have a partner of 13 years, but not married yet and no pets, even though she asks all the time.

CURRENT TRAINING: I have been out with a back injury since September, so just some swimming.

GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: I need to take off a little weight and would like to have a group to keep me accountable and hopefully meet some like minded friends.

Hopefully I would be a good Manatee because I have some experience, but still understand the challenges.

Really? MiamiMan was my first HIM.  I thought the big draw was it is at the Miami zoo.  Homestead speedway is about 20 miles from the zoo. Perhaps in the early days it was in that location?  I know that there was a fairly recent sprint distance race at the speedway, but I don't know if it has survived.

ETA: the bike course could have gone to the speedway and around it and back etc and still stage out of the zoo.

Holy Moly. I am gonna be left in the dust with you folks. Getting here once a day is gonna leave me a lot of catching up.

Here is the promised bio:

NAME: Robin

STORY: I am 55. I am an Adult Onset Athlete. I had been active hiking, some kayaking and mountain biking but never, ever ran, only swam to play around and would NEVER ride on the road. . About age 48 I decided I did not want to be as large as I was so I started to loose some wt. In the process I started running. Somehow someone said triathlon and I found BT and started lurking. I started with a mentor group and did  my first sprint that year. I have been bumbling around here since doing an occasional sprint or oly race and some running events.

FAMILY STATUS: Married with two grown step-kids. Three cats and one 10-yr old German Shepherd who is the best dog ever. Sorry all, she is!

CURRENT TRAINING: I just started this week with a beginner HIM training plan for my late May HIM.

THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: Two Oly's, one sprint and my first HIM. Several running events are thrown in there, too.

GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: To once again get rid of this wt that hangs around and  I just took early retirement so I want to keep healthy to play around like a kid and keep being active for many, many, many years.

WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: Even though I do not like pop-tarts, I will hoard them for others.

FWIW, I am from "more old people" area in Fla but now live in WNC in the mountains.

It's like facebook for exercisers. Just go to strava.com and setup an account. Chris can add you to the manatees. Follow us other manatees and you'll see our workouts pop up when we do them. You can link strava to your garmin account so that the workouts are automatically loaded into strava from garmin.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
