Master 4452 | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! rrrunner - 2013-01-27 1:49 PM Well I had my first bike vs car close call today. Plan called for a three hour ride so I planned to ride up to the dam and back for the first hour then drop down in to town and climb up the mountain for the next hour or so then head back. Well the climb to the dam went well (got 2nd on KOM on Strava) then I had one of my new home-made rice cakes (bought the Feed Zone cookbook this weekend, love it) and set my sights on the mountain. Well as I got to the main intersection in town a car decided to turn left right in front of me. I always sit up going through intersections and when I'm on a road with little or no shoulder and I only use such areas to get to someplace safer. Well the car paused so I thought (silly me) that he was going to yield. DH thinks the pause was to make sure I saw the driver so he could take right of way. So he turned in front of me and I hit the brakes, the bike got squirrelly but I kept it rubber side down. I pulled in to the next available parking lot to calm down and realized my rear brake was way loose. At they point I scrapped the ride. I was shakey and figured riding up and down the mountain with one good brake was a bad idea. Thought I'd finish on the drainer, but I don't think that's gonna happen. I'm ok, just shaken up. Glad you weren't hurt TJ. That sounds scary. |

TriAya - 2013-01-26 9:53 AM Artemis - 2013-01-26 2:06 PM Manatees, I am full of grumpiness right now. I thought I escaped the norovirus or whatever stomach bug the rest of my family had. I even managed to run today!! Sadly, I did not. Now I am miserable. I hope this at least counts as a core workout. Yes it does, and I'm soooo sorry! Ugh. Meh...I figured it was going to happen after E and DH got sick. Doing better today. On the plus side, I'm down 5 pounds! On the down side, I missed my long run. Not so worried about the long run. Just focusing on feeling better right now. |

It was -31F outside and I only got a 1.75miles run in at those temps. I thought of showing off how few clothes I was wearing but figured these would be sufficient.
Dude...Ice Ninja is right! You have major bragging rights for that! |

I'm sure this pot has been stirred many times, but I'd love to hear responses to this article that is more pro heal strike. Check out the thread in TT: http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=475752&posts=12&start=1
Personally, I think everyone has their own ideal way to run. If you are conservative and sloooowly and cautiously increase volume and frequency your body will naturally adjust to run as efficiently as it can and is supposed to. So, what do you do? I run like a gazelle of course Nah, I don't know. It's been a long time since I have had my gait analyzed (I only did it once over a year ago, when I got my first pair of running shoes and had NO clue what it all meant at the time.) I suppose I could get some video and you could all tell me. Honestly though, I have continued to see improvements and remained relatively injury free with high mileage and increasing quality. I have to believe that my body has done it's job in migrating towards an efficient running style(if it wasn't already doing it to start.) But of course. If there's one thing I identify with as a triathlete, it's being a runner. It's all about staying injury free for me. I've seriously lost the last two years to running injuries. But, I feel many running PRs coming this year. And more next year. |

He gets it and also the fact that his family have never welcomed me into their home or done anything for us. Point made point taken I have a legitimate excuse to be a biatch for three months watch out! Nice 6.5km run yesterday today me and the drainer having some fun 2-3 hours just music and the wheels |

Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! TJ - glad you are OK, close call with a car and a not-right brake is reason enough to scrap the workout. Congrats on the 2nd KOM (QOM?), that, other than being unhurt, was a bright spot in your ride! Did you use a rice cooker for your rice cakes? I'm in the market for a new one, my rice cooker doesn't seem to work right anymore. Jonathan in AK - wow, that is seriously hard core!!! Congrats on the frigid run. As for your fitness test, I agree it is better to have a passing time that is acceptable without you blowing yourself up and getting hurt. Jo - sounds like you had a great swimming weekend and getting to hang out with those hunky guys in little suits is definitely a bonus!! Wishing you the best of luck with your in-law situation. |

I have a Hamilton Beach. We bought it when we were housing hockey players. They ate a LOT of rice. I figure if it survived a hockey season with them it can handle anything. It works great for my needs. I can even steam veggies in it. Feeling less shaken today. I did lose some sleep contemplating my outdoor bike rides. Between the near miss yesterday and the ghost bike appearing on one of my favorite (read safest) routes, I'm rethinking my long rides. I'm also contemplating making up the 1:50 I missed yesterday. Maybe not all at once, maybe 30 minutes per ride till I get it made up, maybe not at all. We'll see. It's a heavy training week without tacking on another 1:50 bike ride. |

If it's a heavy training week, I would not try to make up the ride. If you get towards the end of the week and you're just brimming over with time and energy, consider adding some time to each of your remaining rides or adding a recovery chunk in the evening after a long or intense ride in the morning. Frustratingly, I haven't gotten to see your swim vids yet (okay, well, half of the above-water 200 is as much as my squirrel-powered connection seems to want to allow) so not much to say except it's clear you need to rotate more on your long axis. A visualization to try is to point your hip to the bottom of the pool as you reach forward to begin the stroke. P.S. I'm an idiot AND on a seriously off day ... I should point out (FIRST) what I liked about what I saw--you have a very smooth stroke, nice long and relaxed, and a good streamline off the wall as well as good body position in the water, meaning you're nice and straight (like in the streamline), you aren't dragging your legs and they're not sinking. Master 1890 Gig Harbor | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! OK Manatee's. Here are the deets of my race... I posted a race report, and I posted on my blog - but I left out a few of the details that I saved just for you guys to get a good laugh at. I'm supposed to catch my train out of Seattle (45 min drive) on Saturday morning at 7:40 a.m. Normally not a big deal, as I'm an early riser, but I went out with my brother Friday night, and didn't get in until 1:00 a.m. Did I mention that I drank way, way to much beer? With my alarm set for 5:00 a.m. I still wasn't worried, because I new I could sleep on the train. For some reason though, I didn't sleep well at all, and I woke up about 10 mins before my alarm went off. I was feeling nauseous and decided "F" it I'm scrapping the race. About 10 mins later, I was praying to the porcelain goddess while on my knees on my bathroom floor. I barfed and suddenly felt better, so I decided to brush my teeth, take a shower and hit the road. LOL It must be known that (a) I haven't vomited from over consumption of alcohol in at least 10 years, so it must have been something I ate right? And (b) there must be a porcelain goddess, because she answered my prayers and made me feel better. I make it to Vancouver and spend most of the afternoon walking around, re-hydrating, and eating as much food as I can. I'm in bed by 8:00 p.m. and slept a full 12 hours (something I also never do). Sunday is race day - I walk from my B&B to the race start (about 1.5 miles). It was raining and cold, so I stop at Starbucks for a last cup of coffee. Questioning the decision to drink a cup of joe 45 mins before start time, I drink about 1/3 and dump out the rest. Race starts - I'm feeling surprisingly well. cruising right along and since you all know I run naked (without a watch), I ask the guy beside be what our pace is. He says "about 4:30 per kilometer." Sh*t!! I forgot I was running in Canada and everyone was using splits in kilometers!! So I just keep running. At the 8k mark, I get passed by a guy who had been stalking me for a while. I found out that he was Canadian as well when he replied with "4:30 per kilometer." "Oh well" I thought, at least I was consistent. I decided to pick up the pace so as to negative split the last 1/2 of the race. I pass 8k stalker boy at the 10k mark and this time I wisely ask him what our overall time was. He said "43 minutes." That is a full 5+ mins faster than my 10k time last year! I cross the finish line in 1:05:16 (that's what the race clock said). That is an average pace of 7:00.17 seconds per mile! I missed my goal of going sub 7 by 2 seconds overall! That 2 seconds will motivate the hell out of me next time I think I'm going to skip a run day! Long walk (1.5 miles feels longer after the race than before) back to the B&B for a hot shower and to change. Did I mention the walk was up the hill, in the rain, and it was freezing cold? I couldn't run there to stay warm, because I left it all on the course. I spend the next few hours in a pub watching a hockey game and talking to Bee and Kyle. They are a cute couple. Kyle is 25 and a bartender. He works hard, drinks hard, watches hockey and snowboards as often as possible. Bee is a gorgeous 29 year old British nanny who works hard, drinks hard, watches hockey with Kyle and snowboards as often as possible. She has done this in France and Switzerland also, but not with Kyle. I am a 41 year old American male who is seriously envious of both their lives! I leave the pub in plenty of time to make my train. Get to the train station and see a small line for the Seattle bound train so I decide to go have a Big Mac. After finishing my Big Mac, I go to board my train AND THE DOORS ARE LOCKED AND CUSTOMS IS CLOSED! I knock on the door and the customs guy comes over. I am standing their with my ticket in hand and my passport and looking at my train (which isn't leaving for 15 more minutes) and they won't let me board the train. 3 agents have gathered around now - all with nothing to do, and not one of them was willing to check my bag and let me get on my train! I'm trying to laugh it off (at the time) but inside I'm really pissed. I missed my train for a Big Mac! LOL (now it's funny). The customs agents point me to the Greyhound station. $24 and 45 mins later, I'm boarding a bus for Seattle. Oh well - not the end of the world but I will tell you this. The Amtrak train seats are much, much more comfortable than the bus seats. I made it home about 11:00 p.m. last night and am playing hooky from work today so I could update you all on the adventures of Chad this weekend. Stupid 2 seconds and Big Macs! |

Seattle | Subject: RE: Mad Manatees Mentor Group - VERY CLOSED!!! Sorry! Muskrat37 - 2013-01-28 12:13 PM OK Manatee's. Meh, it's always good to keep things interesting. Especially with the Canadians I got pulled over last time I was up there ... I forgot to share THAT story.
Anyway, glad you had a nice race! |
