I woke up to a winter wonderland out there (although nothing like the East I am sure).  The dogs should enjoy their run this morning, although it is still cold and windy out

I'm not sure I would describe what we are getting as a wonderland.  It's looking like we will be housebound for the day for sure.

I tried to do a 20 minute power test on the trainer this morning and failed miserably. Is it common that some people will just be better at doing the 2x8 minute test than the 20 minute one? I'm pretty sure that if I'd have finished it, it would have told me to lower my FTP (rather significantly). Very disappointed in myself this morning

Driveway shoveling x 3 hours(!) Over here. Awesome core workout. Unfortunately the street is covered with 3 feet of snow. Its around 12:30 pm and not a plow in sight. So I can drive up and down the driveway but that's about it. I guess I probably wont be able to make it to the pool today, which is fine because I can no longer move my arms! Hope everyone else which shared in this extreme storm is doing OK.

My guess is your legs are actually still fatigued from 9 hell days on the bike.  I know mine are.  It's not obvious until you try and do certain things.  And you haven't really given yourself a whole lot of rest

Definitely this. I suffered a blown workout today as well - supposed to do climbing intervals in the mountains for 3x15 minutes at 90,95, and 100% of my 20 minute ftp. I could barely hold 90% on the first one, and it went south from there. 100% fatigue related. That happens sometimes, and that is how you know. The wife did a 20 minute test climbing though and had great numbers: 8% increase over her peak last year. And the weather was glorious: 30 degrees when we rolled out, but mid 50s by the time we finished up and mid 60s back at the house. Hope this warm air gets to you snow-bound folks quickly!

Sally - kudos to your husband - that is none too shabby. And good on you for keeping your legs going round and round.

Kate - agree, the logging definitely keeps you motivated. Nice swim after a long run too - my legs would have been seized up within 400 yards. I hate swimming after running or biking.

Lani - definitely log the shoveling under strength training - that is legit!

x3 on the fatigue issue.  A 20' test is not supposed to be something you can do at any time.  It's similar to a 5k race.

As others have mentioned, testing is hard and fatigue can plan a huge role in the validity of your results. However, IME a 2x8 is not of sufficient duration to predict FTP; I typically use a 5' and 20' (on different days) and the critical power model with the athletes I coach.

This article is worth a read when it comes to FTP testing:

I agree with Fred in that if you ride consistantly, and make sure to do a lot of hard efforts when you ride, then you don't need to test that often.  If you start seeing small improvements in your training efforts, it's likely that your FTP also saw some small improvements and you adjust accordingly.

Now it you don't ride that often or consistantly, and you don't push that hard when you ride...you're probably not going to have a very good idea of where you are at any given time...thus it may become more important to test.

We still have the tail end of the storm hanging around here, lots of wind.  I still got my long run in - 17.75km on snow covered roads.  With the wind, I ended up going back and forth on a 1.1km stretch of road that was sheltered from the wind for most of the run.

Supposed to go up to +6 degrees C on Tuesday - bizarre weather this winter.

I hope everyone else on the east coast faired out ok with the storm.

Can't run.

After 4 months of ITB issues, that's fixed and this (remove expletive) achilles is an issue - and it came out of nowhere.  If I'm barefoot then I have no issues, as soon as I put on shoes I have pain.  Hacked out part of the back of an older pair of shoes after reading some suggestions online - made it just over a km and half this morning before giving up.

Trying to find a local podiatrist or chiroprod.  Friggin depressed at the moment. [/rant(whine)]

10 days straight of cycling: 319.6 miles/16 hours 04 mins.

Great start to the month for cycling but a big goose egg on the run and swim!

I'm not hopeful about running this week as I still feel my stitches pull when I try to run, I am supposed to get them out tomorrow but it's still a big wound (TMI???). Most of my running shoes irritate it except for a really old pair of Asics but I don't want to run "funny" and risk hurting something else...so I will continue to wait. I do pan on putting a Tagaderm bandage over it and starting o swim again this week.

Well bummer...neither one of those injuries has a quick fix but hope you can find a doctor that can help!

Hopefully you can still ride & swim??

Bummer Neil.  Bryan is going through similar type things, seemingly in the same sequence.  I know he has started a pretty aggressive strength training program to try and counter it.  Not sure if he's been at it long enough to have any feedback and he's just really starting to run but maybe reach out to him

Nice.  Our weather is still kind of crap up here, some snow falling still.  I should start driving to Fountain Hills on the weekends and get some outside riding in

To all of you braving the weather up North, especially in the Northeast!  It was 80 here in Naples and I have a major sunburn from being at the beach four hours on Saturday.

My workouts this weekend were just ok, nothing to get excited about, Saturday was 2 hours on Paddleboard.  Sunday, was a really slow and easy run.  Can't wait till March first to start officially tri-training again (been doing Crossfit for four months).  Today workout is listed below:

1000 meter row
45 pound Thruster, 50 reps
30 pull-ups

30 Minutes Swim, lots of kicks and pulls!

Enjoy your day!
