You guys are awesome, and it makes this fun. I am officially 25, 366 days. (hehehe) A few months ago I was at a stop light and was rear ended by a bus. I was doing physical therapy, AND it has since gotten worse so I've needed to scale back mostly with my running. But I'm still trudging along. I have been dealing with the whole concept of loosing someone close to me. My great Aunt had cancer they thought was in remission, but it's actually spread all over her body. They gave her a couple months. The only thing I have ever lost was my cat. That was sucky enough. Needless to say this exercising has been very cathartic. I'm doing a 50km bike "race" on Sunday. I went into a local bike store the other day and they showed me how to use my gears, so hopefully that will be helpful. I'm also spending a lot of time in the water and strength training. (I'm looking less and less like a flopping fish AND I made eye contact and said good morning to someone in the pool the other day -- it was a cute boy -hehehe...I'm very shy so this is a big deal). I also bought the triathletes training bible. Most of the stuff in there goes WAY over my head but it's prey I've come across a few interesting things, though. 1) Ladies - I am busty (38DD). I found a GREAT sports bra that does the job. But I tried putting it on right after a swim. It was impossible. Literally. Do you have any suggestions for a supportive AND easy to put on sports bra? Otherwise I'm going to be in transition for 20 minutes. 2) Is supplemental nutrition required for a Sprint Distance triathlon? I remember when I was running, runs over 1 hr required gels or sports drinks. Thoughts on this? Given my individual event times, I'm looking at about 2hrs to complete this -- I may finish dead last. 3) Whats the conversion between pool swimming and open water swimming? I.e. how many laps should I be able to swim in the pool to swim 750m in open water?

Hi Emily. Sorry to hear about your troubles, but good to see you're being active!

1. I don't really know specifics to do here, but the general idea would be to keep it as simple as possible. So especially for any main articles like the top and shorts (or suit), try to set this up so you just wear it the entire race without switching things here. The ladies here can give much better details as to how.

2. Extra nutrition is not required, though people often like to have a little something. The bike tends to be the best place for this. I'll have a single gel and tend to recommend about that much for a sprint. Meaning either use a gel or figure about that much nutrition from another source. Some other food types work too as does a sports drink. It's not all *that* long of a race and you'll be working quite hard, so less tends to be better than more here. If you're looking at close to 2 hrs, then maybe a *little* more than I do, but even for an Olympic I still only have 2 gels. I do always have plenty of water available.

3. Generally open water will take about as long to do and maybe/probably a little more. Sighting, swimming straight and course accuracy all come in. So do surface conditions like wind & waves. For how much to swim, I think being able to swim a main set in your workouts at least your race distance should work. Preferably longer, but it also matters how well you get through it. So this is a good warm-up, then at least the 750 and still be ok. I like seeing someone be able to go into a workout knowing they'll get there. Being a little tired shouldn't affect getting there, just how fast you do it. So try to get to a point where the race distance is fairly routine in the pool.

Belated happy birthday?  Bastille Day birthday?

Sorry to hear about the accident.  I'm glad that you are doing PT and trying not to overdo it.  Take care!

Ah, grandma.  What can I say? {{hugs}}

I'm doing a 50km bike "race" on Sunday. I went into a local bike store the other day and they showed me how to use my gears, so hopefully that will be helpful. Fun stuff!  It will be awesome!

Swim with the bra on.  In your sprint you will probably wear tri shorts, your sports bra and a snug fitting tri top.  You clothing change.

2) Is supplemental nutrition required for a Sprint Distance triathlon? I remember when I was running, runs over 1 hr required gels or sports drinks. Thoughts on this? Given my individual event times, I'm looking at about 2hrs to complete this -- I may finish dead last.

You might use sports drink on your bike if that's something you normally do.  They'll probably have sports drink and water at the aid station(s) on the run.

3) Whats the conversion between pool swimming and open water swimming? I.e. how many laps should I be able to swim in the pool to swim 750m in open water?

30 lengths/15 laps if you are in a 25 meter pool (750/25 = 30)

Me, I'm just riding far and watching the Tour.

I hope everyone has a great week!

Yes, I am trying to be on the mend while still getting some work outs in so I don't put on 1000lbs!    I am also scratching Sunday's race from my calendar, not necessarily b/c of my shoulder bursitis, but b/c it seems I've been sort of un-invited to my childhood home (just for that weekend)!

Why is your brother being so mean to you?  He'd better be planning to get you a Super Awesome birthday gift!

Happy birthday, Emily!!  Big milestone, turning 25.

I'm so sorry to hear about your great aunt.  I'm glad that you've been able to use exercise as a way to cope, even though you've been struggling physically too.  (((Big hugs))) as you go through this really tough time.  I'm sure your aunt is proud of you and if she isn't, she sure should be!

Yay on the biking and swimming progress!!  And way to go with the cute guy at the pool.  Stepping out of one's shell can be SUCH a big challenge and you're doing it.  So many accomplishment to celebrate!!

I think you've gotten your answers to your questions.  There's so much to learn with this whole tri thing.  It seemed so simple when I started.  You know, just swim, bike, and run, right?  Then once you get into it, questions crop up.  I've found that the more I do it, the more questions I have.  BT also has lots of info in the articles section and the Tri Talk forum.

Keep up the good work - you're doing great!

Thanks for popping in to say hi, Emily!  The others gave you some good answers to your questions, so I will simply offer my condolences and a hug, and a high five for keeping active as a form of therapy (it totally works!) and making gains in your training.  Keep up the good work!

Awfully sorry to hear about your great Aunt.  I hope you are able to make some special memories in the next couple months.

Happy belated birthday!   And congrats on overcoming some shyness.  Making eye contact with anyone is a big step, but cute boys!  It sounds like training is doing good things for you on many levels.

Sports bra--as others have said, wear it to swim.  Just make sure to put lube of some type in any areas that may chafe.  I found a new spot that does so on my race on Sunday--ouch

Open water swimming--I haven't found the distance to be that different between OWS and pool.  If you can do 750m in the pool, you can swim that far in the open water.  But the point Darren made about being able to to grab onto the side or end is valid.  The biggest hurdle I faced was just being comfortable not having that 'safety blanket'.  Also, cold water temperatures take some time to acclimate to with respect to being able to breathe normally.  Definitely get out in the open water before your race to practice, as much as possible, and get in early and get a warm up in on race day.

Thanks for checking in; keep on posted on how things are going!

One of the things I've done is to not allow myself to take any more than one breath when I get to the wall, even if that means holding my breath a little while turning around (I don't do flip turns).  That's helped me get over the habit of stopping every length to catch a few breaths.  Also, when I did my OWS, I wore a wetsuit and practiced just floating on my back for a bit to get comfortable doing that as a way to take a little break.  The wetsuit adds a great deal of buoyancy so it's easy to float if needed.  I'm a little worried about doing an OWS race without a wetsuit; luckily, my two races this year are wetsuit-legal so I don't have to deal with that yet.

Drive by check in:

New bike rocks, just joined local road race team, new nephew born yesterday, business is super busy so haven't been on much, 9 days without sugar (trying to get lean), we have a cold front today bringing our temps down to the low 90s, my BT logging has been sub-par but those of you on Strava know that I'm still alive

Hope everyone is doing well and I'll catchup soon.

WOW - take a couple days away and whoooooosh… way behind.  So, here goes (sorry for the brevity).  Happy birthdays, welcome (and one of each to Emily), congrats on some silly awesome racing (more comments as I read each RR - on which I am personally only ONE race behind) and happy Nude Day (or whatever the official title is) to all!

Cra-cra here.  Went to Austin with kids this weekend on a "marketing" trip so they could see it once before moving (and did some worky stuff).  Great weekend and Barton Springs ROCKS for OWS!  Can't wait to get there for good (and the high was only 102 - which felt surprisingly NOT "gates-of-hell" if the truth be told).

Apparently there were a few people observing the above mentioned holiday, as well (one on sixth street - the kids thought that was funny - and one at Barton Springs… which made my teenage son wish for better prescription swimming goggles!).  The Better Half informed me that it is legal in 48 states to be topless when out and about.  Who knew?!?

OK, so this next part is silly, but I'm psyched.  Got a roll-down slot for ITU Long Course Worlds in Motala Sweden next year!  Go Team USA!!!  Going to try to make a family vacation around it (if I can survive that swim!).

gtg - arranging move.  ONE WEEK UNTIL PACKING.  yikes...

So funny about your son!!  Obviously an excellent marketing strategy to get the kids revved up about moving.

And the above is NOT silly!!  It's sooper-dooper-a-la-lee-looper!!! (Note the use of orange.)  Congrats and how much fun would that be?!

ONE WEEK UNTIL PACKING.  yikes...

Matt

HAHAHA about the teenage son and prescription swimming goggles, heh heh heh. So glad you made it to Barton springs!

Duuuude that is awweeeessooommme!! yes!! Sweden!!!!!

Also, I go to Austin every year. We haven't talked about this coming year but if we do we MUST run. You know they are hosting the beer mile championship in a few months, too, right?

Working on one part of my training right now, in fact.    It miiiiiight be the only race I could contend in, if you toe the line!  (and then only just)

Manatee run in Austin!!!  Who's in?!?

Too.  Awesome.  To.  Contemplate...

Matt

Mmmmm, makes me wonder, what with speedy nat qualifiers, and itu qualifiers, we should get a manatee sponsorship :-) congratulations.

How is everyone doing this week? I hope all is well.

Emily - Good to see you! I hope you keep pushing your training. Even more though, keep pushing out of your comfort zone, that is where growth comes from. Be it in training, racing, and most importantly, in life. It is apparent you are a caring, kind hearted person, now it's time to let other people know as well. I hope your 50K goes well and that you finish with a smile!

Matt - Good to see the move is going well, it sure sounds like paking time is upon you. Keep training for beer mile, she can definitely bring it! And congrats on Sweden.

Jonathan - It sounds like you and your new bike are getting along quite well. Keep the rubber side down and keep pedaling, my friend.

Adrienne - It was good to see your RR and your cool experience. What is the next piece of fun we'll be seeing from you? BTW, your Instagram has been a blast to follow.

Janyne - I think you already know my feelings on this, but if not, you rock!!! Your weekend with the ride, the swim, and the concert looked awesome.

Stacey - Enjoy the cooler weather, it will warm up soon and you'll be wishing it hadn't Keep plodding along and we'll keep cheering for you!!!! You'll do great, just keep going.

Ann-Marie - Enjoy your peaceful upcoming weekend.

Yanti - Enjoy your wedding/honeymoon #3.  Have you come up for air yet?????

Darren - Have you caught up on RR's yet???? Your long course weekend looked like you had a good time as well, congrats!

I apologize if I missed anyone. As I said, I hope all is well. Take a few minutes today to remember this: "Your body is your most priceless possession; you've got to take care of it!" Jack Lalanne

I learned in this race that in order to finish the swim, you have to know where you are going. And in order to know where you are going, you have to learn to sight.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
