Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm not even surprised at how much I missed. We just spent four wonderful days on our first camping trip. Those of you who are on FB already know how much fun we had. Started off with a bang on Saturday afternoon. 20min from where we wanted to stop for the night, we came across a two-car accident. Jason spent the next 3 hours helping the rescue team extract a man from his car...kids and I watched/waited/entertained ourselves. Instead of having the afternoon to explore, we set up camp in the dark. 5am came very quickly when Mak said "It's time to get up! It's daytime!" Luckily I snuggled her back into bed for a bit. We packed up and drove north to Red Canyon and then Bryce Canyon...where we hit a big storm that even dumped some hail. Bryce was a quick stop for a little canyon viewing and trail exploring. After some discussion we decided to head down to Zion for Sunday night/Monday. Jason was so sore and dirty from helping with the accident, we thought we'd get beds/shower in Springdale. Monday turned out hot and crowded, so instead of a trail hike we did a river walk before heading back to Kaibab forest for our last night. Unlike Saturday, we had a few hours to set up camp and explore the woods and meadows. We heard elk and coyotes and saw a flock of wild turkeys. And what camping experience would be complete without a storm? We knew there was a chance, so we were ready for it around 2am. Luckily it didn't dump too much rain and was more a flash/bang kind of storm. Whole trip was so much fun and kids are ready to "camp in the wild" again as soon as possible (20140714_132524.jpg) (20140713_155205.jpg) (20140713_130521.jpg) (20140714_173113.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 20140714_132524.jpg (61KB - 8 downloads) 20140713_155205.jpg (50KB - 11 downloads) 20140713_130521.jpg (87KB - 8 downloads) 20140714_173113.jpg (95KB - 15 downloads) |

I think that they made a mistake on the course map. Shouldn't the route be going the other direction? No, it's fine. ETA: And what I mean with this is to look more at the intent of the race. It's more about the surrounding area and being out in it. With this direction you go from the less interesting area to more. Much of Zion centers around the one river road, not where this is running though very nearby. Even though the run doesn't actually go on that road there should still be a very noticeable difference in the surrounding terrain to look at as things can go from a little more open (or barren to some) into much bigger peaks, colors and canyon walls. I'd much rather be heading into that than out of it even if it meant doing more uphill! Edited by brigby1 2014-07-16 12:45 PM |

But, I survived running in the smoky mtns earlier this year, so I think I'd be okay. That little bump in the middle looks nasty though!! |

The run at Lake Logan is a gradual uphill (66 feet/mile) until the turnaround for the Oly. I won't say that you don't feel it but it's not bad really. This course has about half that gain. |

The company that puts on this race has a whole series centered around national parks. i don't think they've actually gotten permission to run inside any of the parks though - what I've seen they are just outside. In september i am running a HM just outside the TN side of smoky mtn national park. While not in the park, the views should still be great and afterward we can hike inside the park. Same thing with Zion, we might not be inside the park for the run, but it should still be nice and then we are at Zion for a few days of fun!! |

The other thing to consider for the sea level flatlanders is the elevation. There's less oxygen at 3,500 ft. than at sea level. That being said, now I'm thinking about it too. It'd be an elevation drop for me (I'm at 5,280) plus it'd be a good incentive to work on my running over the winter. I've always wanted to go to that area and it's only about a day's drive. Hmmmm. Manatee meet-up? |

Much of Zion centers around the one river road, not where this is running though very nearby. Even though the run doesn't actually go on that road there should still be a very noticeable difference in the surrounding terrain to look at as things can go from a little more open (or barren to some) into much bigger peaks, colors and canyon walls. I'd much rather be heading into that than out of it even if it meant doing more uphill! Either way is wrong for the flatlanders among us. It would take me 466 of my regular routes to see that kind of elevation. I know what you're saying, but at the same time the grade seems very steady and less than 1%. You would actually be fine, just a hair slower on the pace. I'm sure that the map makes it look worse than if feels. The run at Lake Logan is a gradual uphill (66 feet/mile) until the turnaround for the Oly. I won't say that you don't feel it but it's not bad really. This course has about half that gain. Says the person who can run real hills and not the little inclines that Chris and I call hills! Those aren't hills?!?! |

I am a big fan of both Bryce and Zion, so I am a little jealous. In fact, I am considering this HM in Zion http://www.thezionhalf.com/
I think that they made a mistake on the course map. Shouldn't the route be going the other direction? No, it's fine. ETA: And what I mean with this is to look more at the intent of the race. It's more about the surrounding area and being out in it. With this direction you go from the less interesting area to more. I won't be that concerned about the altitude. Asheville is at 2000+ feet and the Lake Logan run that I mentioned about is at 3200 feet. Neither are different feeling to me than Raleigh which is at about 350 feet. (Hands, Lake Logan is near Waynesville, I'll bet if you check your Garmin data that you've run at 3500 feet this year). |
