Thanks, but unfortunately, it is in the northern part of the state. And my Saturday has been given to a fundraiser for the Homeless Coalition here. It is a nice golf outing, The Barstool Open. Yes, Salty, 9 bars, mini golf, and it is all for a good cause. It may put a crimp  in my training plan, but as I said, it is for a good cause

That sounds like a very fun day, Chris, and for a good cause as well.  I loves me some mini-golf!  And beer. Innocent  And no, no, no, it's not a crimp in the training plan, consider it a cross-training day! Laughing

My training partner and I and JUST different enough that I needed my own timing device to complete my workout (as the rest of the group was doing a different, non-marathon specific workout) Anyway, I forgot a watch so I had to carry my phone and use the stopwatch function lol fun stuff ....

Anyway, the workout was supposed to be 8 x 800 @ 3:08 (so, that's a 6:16 pace for all you no-mathy peeps) with limited recovery (2:00 running in the turf)

Here were my splits:

8 x 800: 
3:08 
3:08 
3:05 
3:00 
3:05 
3:05 
3:06 
3:00 

Then got a nice pep talk from our coach. I told him I fly in Monday and he thought I meant marathon Monday and was about to lose his sh*t.

He is so soft and occasionally cuddly. He still has his puppy fir and undercoat so it is extra soft and smooth.

On a triathlon training note. I have managed to get some activity in each day of April so far. Today I am hoping to hit the pool at lunch. My run yesterday surprised me, I averaged 9:35 or so a mile; before the "hiatus" I was averaging around 10:00 miles for training runs. It might just be that the legs were ready to run and rested but it felt great.

And this is so funny, or at least to me:

So, I don't know if any of you have spent much time around track/XC girls but oddly I have been friends with lots of them throughout my life (why I didn't run earlier, I have NO idea) Anyway, they all tend to have a certain personality type (obviously I am stereotyping a little.) Just very ... sweet people usually, without getting into too much detail. Anyway, Andie is the same way. Just really really nice and sweet, kind of soft spoken etc. Kind of the opposite of how I see myself. I am a lot more uh ... rough around the edges and curse too much, etc. So I always feel a little a little self conscious when we are warming up and try to tone it down a bit. 

Anyway, we get into talking about how we got into running. And in her sweet, innocent soft spoken voice she tells me that she was a competitive motorcycle racer and was asked to quit (by her pleading husband) after going into a guard rail at 160+ MPH! HA! I was not expecting that!

I missed this from your original.  It's generally not recommended to run with a dog the size of Pikatti until they are at least a year old. In fact, I've often read that dogs like labs and goldens should not run with their owners until they are 1.5-2 years old.  At any rate, consider doing some research before diving into this.  It's my understanding that it has to do with when the growth plates close so the recommendation varies based on the size of the breed. I'm sure that Kirsten is more informed that I am on this topic!

Yikes!  That is funny--I have a student who is almost pathologically shy.  Will barely look you in the eye, super quiet and soft spoken.  One day in lab she is not feeling well and goes out to hallway.  I follow, ask if she is ok--she is recovering from a concussion that she got from ATV'ing!  Didn't see that coming either!

Well, since the door got opened...'Forced' exercise--meaning beyond what they would engage in with puppies of similar age--has been shown to be a factor in some bone/joint diseases.  It is usually best to wait for them to be your running buddy until, as Janyne said, the growth plates are closed i.e. he is done growing.  With some large/giant breed dogs, that can be 18-24 months.  I don't think that is the case with your boy, more likely around 12 months.  When you do start running with him, start out short and slow, and on trails/soft surfaces if you can.  Considering his breed, you will also have to be wary of overheating too--where is it you are moving to?

Oh hey, Brie. While you are here, where do you generally watch the marathon from?

I am planning on having my family pick a spot and stay put (rather than trying to see me more than once since, er, it's a pretty ginormous marathon compared to anything I have done before)

I was thinking somewhere on the public transportation line so they can watch me go by then maaaaaaybe see me finish.

 

*Specifically the green line to either woodland or reservoir 

I usually watch it from my living room Wink I can ask some people I know from the local running club what they recommend.  I've only gone into town to see it once, and it was really really hectic (especially because my dad, who was running, got injured but we didn't know it and he took about an hour longer than anticipated while limping to the finish, and we thought he had been seriously hurt).  I"ll let you know what they say.

I used to do water retrieving with Jim's dog! Her name was Hazel and she was an awesome chocolate lab. She learned better and was much more cooperative if I'd imitate his voice

Sadly, I was the last person to play with her ... I noticed something was wrong, so I called the dogsitter who came and took her to the vet right away, but she died anyway. Poor little thing. She had a number of health problems but ultimately a great life--she was a rescue but disabled and depressed until she got into water therapy and then water sports! Then she was unstoppable!
