frosty12 - 2010-10-27 5:42 AM I just saw a post on Facebook's IMFL page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ironman-Florida/36525832059) from Mike Reilly indicating that he was not going to be at IMFL.

What a RIP!!!  He is going to AZ because of Chrissy.  BUT SO MANY OF US ARE FIRST TIMERS AT IMFL!!!  We've been hearing Mike calling our names as an IRONMAN in our dreams for a YEAR! WHAT A RIP!
I don't understand the need people have to have Mike Reilly call out your name. I mean isn't the ironman all about the journey and personally making it to the finish line? Letting some guy upset you because he isn't there to call out your name is crazy! I couldnt have cared less about who was talking into the mic when I crossed the finish line. It was all about me and finally making it to the line despite my major struggles during the race. And like many others have said...I don't even remember hearing my name.

Yeah, my first Ironman I didn't care...I had bigger things going on.  But this time it's been a goal of mine to actually hear him say it.  So, yeah...I'm a little disappointed.  And okay, I guess I have to readjust my goal to "hear whoever is announcing say my name".  Do they have a standard substitute?  Heh, at least he'll have thousands of athletes in front of me to practice on.

The other guy who works with Mike is very good too. From 11 to midnight Mike is in the finishing chute and the other guy does all the announcing and Mike sort of repeats some of what he says.  They have an ongoing conversation between the two of them hyping everyone else up.

The other guy announced me at IMLP I know as I have it on a video clip on my computer that I have replayed lots of time and at IM Canada Mike was at IMKY the same day but they have this great guy that does lots of BC races I'm blanking on his name but think it is King...he was good very good just different.

It's the journey don't let others people or events effect you and take away from the experience you will have.

Mike R has done the announcing at all the US IMs a year for how long?  10+ years....guy can have a conflict now and again. People outside of triathlons do plan things same day as Ironman.

Boo on no Mike Reilly:

Mike Reilly
Yes I will miss it for the first time since the first year in 99. Just can't be everywhere every year. Have fun everybody and next stop IM Arizona.

Saturday

Nov 6

Sunny 72°Lo 56°

windy as hell

Where are people getting the forecast for race day?  I can only get to friday.

I assume that page is also guessing at the wind? I don't like the sounds of "windy as hell".  I HATE wind.   There goes my 14 hour goal.

Accuweather's extended forecast goes out 15 days.

Again, it's predicting winds out of the NNE...that is the most FAVORABLE solution for race day.  If they are out of the NE we will have a tailwind for 30 of the last 37 miles...the last 7 will be into a quartering headwind on Front Beach as you head towards transition, but with all the condos it shouldn't be a constant wind.

I guess I just don't understand why it matters whom announces your name. Why does it matter if it's mike or someone else? I don't understand why he is so important. I'm sure anyone who they choose will do a fine job...I mean it's only 6 words.

WTC has new way to make money.

Join the Ironman Access club for $1000 and you can register early for almost all the IM races in the world at normal prce and get another chance to enter lottery for Kona. Why do that instead of try for regular entry or pay community fund slot? It would be $1600 if you just signed up for one IM race.

It's just part of the mystique of IRONMAN to me.  I mean, if his name wasn't tossed about so much when reading about IM events and in race reports I guess I would not care one way or the other, but it is...he is part of the IM brand as it were.  I am planning on being estatic when I cross that line.  A year's worth of work and pushing my boundries will be coming to an end, and any way you slice it I WILL be IRON!  I was just bummed that one of the identifiying things about IM won't be part of my race experience!

Daffodil - 2010-10-26 7:32 PM Of all the things I'm starting to question - I'm questioning my swim training.  Swimming is my strength and for months have been able to do 4000 m in 1:10-1:15 but I'm starting to freak out because my swim training hasn't been ideal for the last couple of months (first back troubles, then this cold).

Don't worry Laura.  It's like riding a bike - you just don't forget.

Seriously, because it is such a skill driven sport you'll do fine.   Besides remember, you're in a wetsuit and in salt water and there are lots of people to draft off of.  (these are things I keep telling myself too)

Wow $1000! Just got that email too.  Trying to find a way to make a dime I guess.  I bet if the Boston Athletic Association started something like that this year they would have a lot of bites since the Boston Marathon sold out in 8 hours!  A lot of unhappy people.
But guess who got it!   THis guy! :-P

Hey folks, just dropped in to tell you good luck and race safe.  I'll be at the finish line catching you as you cross from 6pm on.  I'll be in the IM Louisville visor.  Come on by and say HI and tell us your amazing stories as you cross the line.

Am I smart by not riding outside tonight? Is riding on the trainer a pansy move (and missing great training in the wind)?

It's good to practice riding in the wind but this close to IM ride the trainer better safe.

I did 5.5 hour ride 1.5 on Computrainer then outside for 4 hours. Roads were wet with wet leaves, so took safe option. I've done to much training to do something risky 10 days out.

Now you have me rethinking my ride tonight!  Sunny, 80 degrees with a nice (15 mph) breeze, had me heading outside tonight!  I don't think I could look out at a day like this through the window on the trainer!
