Originally posted by bzgl40 I must say, this conversation is curing me of my desire to get power.  I'll stick to virtual on Trainer Road just to make sure those hours are not wasted and add some fun.  But it just seems like too much "trouble" to me for power.  Course I am not training for anything so that makes it easier.  I am going back to my lust of new wheels instead.

It looks much more complex written out like this. All that's really being done is pressing a button and not touching anything for a few seconds.

I would torque at 10n-m

Another weekend bites the dust. Tough training weekend for me. The hills in Prince George are wreaking havoc on my legs right now. next race is in about a month so still have some time but running is not feeling good right now...lol

Run and bike tests this week again.

So far the weather has been holding off at my northern latitude. It was 30C today! Craziness. Crossing my fingers it stays around for awhile longer! The trees are changing though... :/

That is too cool.  Did my 6th run of the week today - yeah for me.  Tomorrow I'm volunteering at the local HM put on by the LRS.

THis thread was going on while I was traveling to Canada, so never really read it, but it's pretty interesting stuff.  Gets a little techy in there, but I'd never have assumed clothing has that much of an influence.

As an aside, Jim at ERO is my fitter.   Feel lucky to have such a world class resource a 20 minute drive away.  He's guided me in the bike buying process, and will be going back to see him in a couple weeks with the new ride.

Liking new Sufferfest Vid. Lots of big block riding and they don't go crazy on the attacks. Just moving things around with some surges. 297 for not quite 2 hrs.

Subject: RE: SBR Utopia Season II - OPEN

If there is one thing I was unsure about with the finishing touches of my IM training it was the last weekend of long workouts and if 12 days was enough taper time.  I think I've helped calm those nerves by taking a couple of days of vacation to fit my last long ride and long run in on Thu/Fri (26th/27th) and start the taper after that.

Original plan for Sept 23-29 was
M - 4 mile am run, 4k in the pool pm
T - 6.5 mile am run, 32 mile sweet spot ride pm
W - 9 mile am run, 4k in the pool pm
Th - 6.5 mile am run, 32 mile sweet spot ride pm
F - 9 mile am run, 3k OWS
Sa - 110 mile ride
Su - 17 mile run
Total - 11k swim, 172 ride, 52 run

New plan
M-F is the same
Thu - 110 mile ride
Fri - 17 mile run
Sat - 40 mile easy group ride (more of a social ride)
Sun - 8 mile easy run, 1k easy swim
Total - 9k swim, 182 ride, 44.5 run

2 weeks out will be 8k swim, 90 ride, 22 run
Week of Kona (M-F) will be 5k swim, 30-40 ride, 12 run

Last week was 10k, 174, 48.  This week is 11k, 172, 52.  Ok...I'll stop now.  Can you tell I'm going a little crazy here...it's not even taper madness yet.

Jason:  Looks good.  I may have missed this somewhere in the thread....have you been using a coach for your build to Kona or some other plan?

I just picked up an Adama Road last night.  It was a demo saddle that looks brand new..he sold it to me for $85 but said I could bring it back no questions asked if it does not work.  I thought that price was pretty good so hopefully it works for me.

I am dabbling with getting a coach for this off-season and 2014.   Something that Marc said has stuck with me.  If I am going to train 8-12 hours a week it really makes sense to have someone setting a direction for me.  It probably is not that much money when I figure how much time I spend and invest in the sport.  I need bigger chunks of improvement.  I did not have alot of time to train this year (i.e. kids) but hope when the little man gets in a sleeping groove things will get back to a new normal.

I really need to get in the pool this winter at least 4 times a week which is stark contrast to what I was doing last year.  I need to be coming out of the swim with faster folks and cycling in the legal packs with those guys as I feel my run is pretty good.

I'm finishing up tapering too, Tahoe coming up this Sunday. I feel pretty good aside from getting over being sick last weekend. We'll see how it goes.

Nice, I'll be interested to hear your view of the course after you done.  I'll never do a IM but that location intrigues me

Your FTP is 4.1 w/kg ? You are a 55 VDOT ? I don't know what your definition of "chunks" is but the bar is already pretty high !

I find "chunks" are easier to find when you are starting out or when you have a clear weakness. It sure isn't your run or bike.

For swimming, I do think it's masters that makes the difference. And typically this is a completely different coach than the other 2.

Sometimes it worth trying something new (like a coach) and if the improvements come, continue. If they don't, try something new. Coach/athlete/results don't always happen. Look at the pros.

My concern with you is you have to find a really good coach that is going to be able to squeeze improvements out of someone who is pretty advanced.

This brings up a really good question (in my mind).  What has more benefit - masters or some individual swim coaching?  I actually can't do either at the moment, but I wonder if people have experience going both routes and finding one method worked better than another, or if really, the two compliment each other.

Depends where the swimmer is.  If you held a gun to my head, I'd say masters, because even if your form is not perfect hopefully you are swimming sets that are a bit above you and a challenge.  I guess I'd put the line at if you can swim 1:45/100 consistently, your form is fine (good enough) and masters.  Above that, may need a few tweaks.

But I see lots of folks concentrating on drills and such and not swimming a whole lot.

The off-season is the best time to fine tune your skills and prepare yourself for the next season. It is also time for you to gain some strength and get a little rest after a long season of training.

If you develop a strategy for the off-season, you can go into the next season stronger than you ended the past season.
