Janyne, There are 5 or 6 people in my tri club who have raced it, some multiple years. They say race morning set up with the split transitions sucks and the bike is brutal. Other than that, no other negative feedback. I may just do Chattanooga instead though M2M would be much closer and much, much cheaper.

I'm glad that others have done recon for you ;-) It's good that you have an idea of what you are getting into! It sounds like your tri club sends a group and that's always fun *and* it sounds like you have a sherpa!

Originally posted by JBacarella Next weekend is our local triathlon, as some of you know the city has me act as a liaison for the event. One of the things I also do is help coordinate volunteers, because I know everyone (not hard in a town with a population of 10,000 in the summer). One of my volunteer pools is people who are on probation, parole, drug court and jail trustees. A healthy, drug free (without the threat of jail or actual incarceration) lifestyle in a novel thing for a lot of them, or all of them. Many of them are very talented at saying the proper names of drugs, their uses, and their classification. I just spoke to a lady who is going to do her community service hours at the triathlon. I struggled with the conversation, because she kept calling it the "triptathon." I gently tried to correct her without being rude, but she wouldn't be dissuaded, so I just let her go on. I don't think she is that far off, if you look at it as a combination of antidepressant and athletic event. Your new word for today is: "Triptathon" the combination of athletic event and antidepressant.

Triptathon, got it.    It makes me think of tryptophan, LOL.

I think it's very good of you to utilize this group of people; you never know how volunteering may help them aside from mandatory community service.  Maybe a few will be moved to begin a more active lifestyle or embrace healthier choices.

Every year it has been a very positive experience on both ends. I haven't converted anyone to triathlon or Triptathon, but I have seen how it affects the volunteers and some of the people from the triathlon in a positive way. Also, the RD for another triathlon was there 2 years ago, and they have a juvenile detention facility near him. He took my model and started involving kids from the detention center with their triathlon.

I started training for New Orleans this week and also started a new strength-focused plan.   Lots of hills and low RPM work.  Week 1 and I am D-E-D.  Still have a 3 hour ride tomorrow.  Get strong or die trying is my current mantra

Have a great weekend everyone!

*sigh* (of total resignation and disgust).  My town and the towns around it got hit with over 8" of rain just this afternoon and it's still raining.  The major highway (283) I take to get home has flooded over and is closed.  Streets in town have 10" plus of standing water.  Roads into town are flooded over because of high creeks.  At the moment, I cannot get home.  I will be at work for another hour and a half, roughly, hopefully things calm down and recede by then but I'm not feeling overly hopeful.  The ground is STILL saturated from all the rain and flooding we had the past few weeks and there was still standing water, albeit evaporating a bit, in a lot of fields and other areas.  But the streets will clear eventually, right?

The totally nuts part is I work ~25 minutes away and we haven't had a drop of rain since a very light shower this am that didn't even coat the parking lot.

The good news is our neighbor is home and was able to check on our sump pump and dogs.  Pump is running, dogs are waggy.  Not sure how much water is in basement, I'm a bit concerned about my bike trainer, the most expensive item on the floor of the basement.  But hey, if it comes to it, trainers are replaceable.

I thought we were through all this crap.  If you see images of Mount Joy on national news, that's my drowned town.

Oh no--sounds like the flash flooding we used to get in Saigon. Hope it recedes quickly so you can get home from work! And that your trainer and dogs are okay. Too bad you can't send us some of that rain--we had a little drizzle Sunday night and Monday--first measurable rain since June 17!

My buddy bailed on the tri this weekend. Something about wife, kids, holiday, blah blah blah. I stopped listening after he said he wasn't going to do it. I don't want to fight holiday traffic, by myself, to run a race I don't care about on the other side of the state. No race this weekend. My HIM is next weekend.

Do you know some people, other than your coach, who have done this event? M2M does not have a great reputation here in Raleigh. I have not heard a lot of good things about it.

I'm sure that it's fine. Setup Events generally does a good job. Logistics will be challenging though.

The first year they did it it was AWFUL. They tried to run it themselves and they were way over their heads. The got Setup involved and the bike and run routes were changed and it is run much better. The bike is still on the hillier side of hilly.

I hope that everyone had a great weekend!

Melanie, someone in my tri club posted a panicky note about the Lake Placid forecast (LP weather seems fickle, not sure that I'd worry too much this far out). Anyway, he said first HIM, low of 46, high of 64, rain. He wanted suggestions. This is what I wrote:

I'd pack arm warmers and a bike vest, thinking that I'd use the first but probably not the second. I'd also practice removing or shoving the arm warmers down whole still peddling.

Two gallon zip top bags to put bike and run shoes in. At least you can start off with dry footwear. Dry socks for T2. You may decide not to use them but it may a good option.

Not sure if toe warmers are warranted. Think back to riding in 50-55 degrees in the spring. Would you have toe warmers on?

(a friend pointed out to me that the vest is unnecessary in warming conditions, shove an extra zip top bag under your tri top and remove it when if you get too warm. you can legally dump that at an aid station. he also pointed out that the person who told him that before B2B was.... me.)

Of course we are all sending Good Weather thoughts your way!

Last year was similar highs (but sunny).  I think the high temp for the upcoming race day said 60 and possibly rain last night when I checked (but it seems to change daily because yes, Adirondack weather is fickle and changeable - no use getting too worked up over it).  Anyway, last year I wore a vest and arm warmers and toe covers and was fine (but I tend to 'run hot').  I saw the entire spectrum of clothing choices that day from just a tri suit to folks who put on heavier cycling pants and jackets (I got hot looking at them!).  Eventually I took off my arm warmers while riding and unzipped my vest half way but again, it was sunny.

Last year toe covers were a good idea because morning temps at race start were 37 and water temps were 60, so feet were VERY cold heading out onto the bike.  They were offering warming tents near the swim start/exit and a warming van at the bottom of the Keene descent (around7 miles of descending) if people felt too cold or hypothermic. This year the water temp is a balmy 72 and it's not supposed to be quite as cold in the am but close - low of 40 overnight.  I'll likely wear toe covers again but that's personal preference.  My tri shoes are pretty vented especially on top, not 'warm' like closed cycling shoes.
