Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ![]() Ok, Dinner is cooking. Basing things off of the FIST fitting from Slowtwitch, that 78.98 angle needs to be much closer to 90 degrees. It's tough to tell from the video how many spacers you have but you have 2 options, drop the front or raise the back. I think the 138 angle is off a bit it's probably closer to 140 if I could get the video to stop in the right spot. From what I gather that is fairly close to good with respect to seat height. 140-150 is supposed to be good. I forgot to measure the hip angle, will do that after dinner, that will tell you how high or low the aero bars are relative to the saddle. Reading this part of the thread is very interesting. You guys really know a lot about the geometry bikes. I am impressed! Also, Steve, your pictures are amazing. It looks like a beautiful place to go! Edited by Terps421 2010-01-11 6:42 PM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() AF_SGT - 2010-01-11 5:23 PM Question about rest days. Do I need a FULL rest day? I have been on every day for the last 15, but occassionally, lighten the load for active recovery. How important is a full blown rest day? My plan for my base phase is to have active recovery days on fridays, then during my REST week, actually take a day or two completely off. Tell me what you think...I really dont want to take a full day off....it makes me feel lazy. Thanks for your help...AGAIN I can totally relate... I don't like rest days. I feel lazy and fat and achy. But my plan now has me resting every Sunday, which is the day before my "weekend" workouts (i.e. long bike on Monday, long run on Tuesday). I used to swim on rest days, because swimming really makes my body feel good and it is not taxing like the bike or the run. But yeah, I think true rest is important and good for us. But I still don't like it! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() kickitinok - 2010-01-11 9:40 PM Awww.....looks like I missed out on the ipod music about 10 pages ago. Oh well, here are my favorites when I run: Particle, especially the song: Launchpad, and Rusted Root, esp the song Ecstasy Both are super upbeat and make me want to kick some arse. I had a funny experience today, doing a slow run. It was to be EASY and I had a pace I was trying to hit (much slower than I'm used to going). One of my favorite songs came on (Foo Fighters' Everlong) and it was so hard not to take off and run like a gazelle. I actually made myself keep listening to the song, and found a rhythm I could run to it and get into the song but not pick up my pace. I felt like a thoroughbred at the starting gates... coiled springs... It's amazing the influence music has on me when I run, particularly the songs that make me want to get my arse-kick goin'!!! |

For those of you that have been bitten by the injury bug...What say you? Have there been times you thought of walking away or changing sports because of chronic pain or injuries? Steve Interesting question. I would say no give the injuries I have or have had in the past. If I knew that SBR caused long term issues where I knew I might be hobbling around in my later years, I would definitely think twice about my approach. Somehow I had a setback regarding my foot and am backing off running again. TG, I was really busy at work yesterday or I would have been frantic. I suppose that could still happen after my bike ride this morning. My fitter came over last night and we added 3mm worth of shims to the short leg side (it is only a 1/4 of the differnce. He wanted to intro the change slowly). I jumped on the CT just to check SS#s and making that change actually visibily improved the performance of my longer leg. It still has more power, but for once my #s were in the upper 70s and ATA(?) was between 90-95. Weird. Tony, really like the software you used for your bike analysis. Way more insightful than straight Dartfish. |

For those of you that have been bitten by the injury bug...What say you? Have there been times you thought of walking away or changing sports because of chronic pain or injuries? Steve Steve, ..edited..just saw your full post. Sounds like the guy never drank the kool aid completely. As for real injuries and the mental part. I fight it everyday. I've been injured over a year and the doctors have no idea what's wrong. I been with three specialist in SA and had bone scans, xrays and MRI's and nothing. In all of 2009 I ran a total of 13 miles all at run walk scenarios and never over 30 minutes. I was sitting around getting fat and lazy absorbed in my pity party. Finally decided after going up two sizes that enough was enough. As of Dec 1st. I started drinking the kool aid again. I'm finding it hard to be patient and to take sprint training seriously after going long and knowing the run portion is still going to be a painful run/walk. If I don't find the satisfaction from participating this year that I want I will probably try and do TT bike races and put all my energy towards that since my legs aren't affected in that sport. I've been resisting it because I really like doing all three to keep the boredom down.

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I believe the question was asked earlier, but I got a KK from Bicycle Outfitters Indy, priced at 319, minus 15% for first time orders or - 20% if you do a bit of leg work on google. For 260 or so in the end. They shipped very fast and it even came with a Spinervals DVD. |

It lists all the angles and why they should be that way. http://www.slowtwitch.com/Bike_Fit/F_I_S_T__Tri_bike_fit_system/index.html Obviously though if you get into a steep aero position it doesn't matter if you can only ride that way for 5 minutes before your neck/back/butt give out. So comfort is still very important. |

This is a forum, not an article repository. We're not here to answer questions like "How do people who were here 3 years ago count laps?". We're here to answer questions like "How do YOU count laps". There's a big difference. For every person who actually posts a question, there are probably 10 or 20 reading the first page of that forum at that moment who are looking for the same information. And sometimes they're not just looking for a way to count laps. Sometimes they're looking for a bit of community around this small, odd sport of ours. When starting something like triathlon, it's a big mental boost to know that there are people out there who are at this moment in the exact same position as you, with the same questions. Knowing that there were people like you isn't the same. There's a world of difference between "come sit in the circle" vs. "go look in the library". The Forum Search feature is useful. I just used it to find the other versions of this post from 2006-2008. For people who want to look for questions asked previously, it's great. But our forums are the gathering place for a community, and one of the things communities are very good for is passing on information to new people on a person to person basis. From a practical standpoint I'd hate to see people discouraged from asking questions. Quite the opposite. We want to encourage it. We want them to gather the courage to ask a question and be confident that they'll be responded to politely, accurately and enthusiastically rather than just be told to do a search or go to the FAQ. If that's the case, how is someone to know what constitutes an ok question? How many times can something be asked before it's no longer ok? Following the logic of "that's been asked already" you eventually end up with a situation where you only get a small set of cranky old coots arguing over the aero characteristics of the newest ultra-light carbon bottle holder. There are no stupid questions, no questions that are not ok, no questions that have been asked too much already if they're asked honestly. If you're wondering about something related to triathlon, ask away. Edited by fattyfatfat 2010-01-12 8:16 AM |

Hmm my post must have came off wrong, I more was intending on saying that while I was catching up on a few pages and responding to some posts, I think I saw someone ask where to find the best deal on either the KK or CycleOps. So by no means was I trying to say that I dislike responding to the posts multiple times. I think if you look at my total post count, I would be pretty even between Garmin 305/310, trainers, and most recently powertap or power Gotta get some more posts, so I look to respond to where I can provide knowledge, especially since I am OCD about researching things before I make a decision. Trevor... Sucks you are down and out again. I am also fighting round two of some junk, although I did not get a flu shot. I have only ever had one in my life because I was working in a hospital and they required me to get one. I think my second one is slowly breaking and just turning to a head cold, I will attribute it to my 45m swim last night, had to be the chlorine to help kill some of the bug. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mett - I use a Cyclops Fluid Trainer and love it. Very quiet. Keep you eyes open for sales. Steve - with the exception of a few bloody noses and black eyes from my college sport, this is the first real injury I've had. However I love the sport and I love the training. I don't do well with exercising just for exercising sake, but if I get fit and healthy as a side effect then I am all over it. The best part of this lifestyle is all the inspirational people. My favorites are the Sister Madonna's and Team Hoyts of the world; the BOP age grouper that is 30 lbs overweight and sprinting accross the finish line for all their worth with their family cheering them on; the veterans that start off the Army Ten Miler and dig deep to find the guts to suffer through the course with missing limbs, having my girls draw me good luck cards at school when I have a race that weekend.....that's the good stuff. Question about the aero bars and fittings - Wouldn't it make sense to pull the aero bars back if he is too stretched out, or vise versa? Isn't that part of the benefit of clip on bars? Sorry for the dumby question - I just get nervous when it comes to messing with my seat position. Plus it seems like a cheaper first step to fixing a fit, rather than buying more bike parts. |

For the aerobars--- You can do so many different things. You can put spacer's on the stem, pull the bars back, push the seat forward, pull the bars up (TJ TOLAKSON STYLE) but everyone is different. Although power comes from the same place some may not have the "core" muscles to be set up super aero. About every other year I get re-fitted, and it seems like each time I am getting set up more aggressive, and I think this comes with my muscles being able to handle it. If you are going to tweak anything on your bike do it gradual. Any MAJOR changes, or too much too quickly may result in injury. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Books- I highly recommend "Going Long" by Joe Friel and Gordon Byrn. There is tons of helpful information in the book even if you're only doing short courses. Injuries and triathlon- I've had issues with Plantar Fasciitis, Ankle tendonitis, and Patella Femoral syndrome. With physical therapy, chiropractic, and listening to the signals of my body, I have been fortunate enough to be able to train through and recover from all of them. If I had an injury that simply wouldn't allow me to train for triathlon, I would find another sport I could do that still engaged me and allowed me to have goals to keep myself active. I have seen first hand what happens when people are sedentary, and it is far worse than any injuries I may incur from being active. Just my 2 cents. ![]() |
