A while back at my school in Vietnam (where the kids are taught basic water safety as well as all four strokes), we looked at a lot of research on motor learning and fitness before deciding to make swimming class into two concentrated six-week blocks of 3X a week rather than once a week year-round. There is a lot of evidence that when you are developing new skills, you need a period of concentrated practice to put them into motor memory at an automatic level.

  • This makes a lot of sense, both with respect to the acquisition of motor skills based on research and just from personal experience. There really is something about learning the feel of the water. Some of the HIM plans I was considering before starting training called for a 3x/week swim. I think next time around I will go with one of those as my access to a pool improved a lot when I moved to a new neighborhood that has one.

I could imagine that a program built around 1x/week would be tough to ever really build technique in the first place.

I mentioned this to Melanie and TJ in the past week but... I have been doing some thinking about next season and I was wondering who might be interested in a Manatee Meetup kind of event.

If you are interested, what kind of meet up

    • RAGNAR (Richmond is a trail run with a central camp site so no van needed),
    • some kind of half marathon (Melanie has several interesting options on her page, Hoover dam, etc.),
    • play with bikes (BikeMS? C&O adventure?)

    Hmmm.. Very intriguing!

My husband did the Mesa Falls Marathon a few years ago and said it was beautiful.

I can't post the link because my work computer is stupid. but... Eagle Up Ultra, Canton, OH, choice of distances AND a relay, multiple loops so party camp!!!  I wanted to do it this year, it's on my short list for 2019. DH and I plan to rent a camper to park at the race.

I would be interested.  Ragnar Richmond is on my "one of these days" list, but I am super slow runner and wouldn't want to hold anybody else up.  Or a half marathon would be fun also

Forgot to tell y'all about my new toy. While DH was here last weekend we went in to LL Bean (don't have those in NM) and were looking at kayaks. Told the girl about wanting to have tandem but didn't want it to be so long. She told us about this one that is modular so I can do tandem to take my granddaughter out, or go solo!  We bought it last weekend because LL Bean had 25% off for Labor Day!

Since my running is in the crapper at the moment, I'm partial to bike events. Or simply events where I show up, say hello, and am responsible for camp fires and s'mores.

    Good Luck Racers!

The RD cancelled the swim and now it's a DU HIM. We are expecting temps in the 50's high winds, breaking surf, small craft advisory, and the Coast Guard thought safer to cancel swim. Plus there is an added danger of hypothermia, because of wind and air temps..
