ripping current? The whole time I was thinking "Yes!!!! A current that will carry me Ms super slow! yay!" Now I am a bit scared by the current!

Is it THAT bad?

And Thanks Janyne for keeping up with the Bibs!

It's not bad at all, just be aware of it. I think ripping is a strong word for swimming in it, but it's a good word for looking at your time.

For those of you that have done the Half in the past. How does your time in race compare to your time in the pool? To me, that is the tell all about how fast it is. l know what l can do in pool and am trying to figure out roughly what time l can expect in race.

When I did wrightsville beach traithlon, which is only a little bit shorter of a race. I was swimming the distance in 40ish minutes, but had a 22 minutes swim time.

Are you saying you swim 2000 in pool around 40 minutes and did Wrightsville race (1500 l assume) in 23 minutes?  Would using mile (1650 yards) in pool be accurate estimate?

HumanVelocity - 2010-11-10 4:31 PM It was meant in speed terms. Combine your swim with the current and when you breathe, look at the dock close by and you will seem to be flying. Its a great feeling. If there is little to no wind then it it rather sureal. Your head feels like the bow of the boat cutting through the water.

T??here is no rip so to speak in the water.

Now that sounds much better to me! - Dreamlike!!

In the pool I usually swim 2000 in an hour - but taking breaks (couple seconds after sets of 100, 500 etc) that is though I am fine swimming them without break - I was estimating to need about 45 minutes in the channel for the distance - figuring in the current but also the anxiety and bunch of people in the way/hitting etc.

But that sounds like I might even be a tidybity bit faster Surprised *trying to not get my hopes tooo high up*

I was swimming 1 mile in about 40 minutes before my first race, and did it in 22min. I've been doing more 2000 meter workouts this year so I don't know an estimate for my current times. Though I did the course in 29 the other day with minimal current.

In the pool, I usually swim around 44 minutes for 2200 yards.  In 2008, my time was 34:30 for the swim.  In 2009, my swim time was 29:34.  I hope this helps in you in estimating your time.  Also, expect the water temp to be between 64 and 67 degrees...according to the UNC Wilmington weather stations.

Good luck to everyone.  See you on Saturday morning.

I am not a swimmer. Last year I was most probably doing 12 x 100 in 1:33-35 with 25 sec rest in the pool when I swam. I did not swim much at all, actually totalled 15k yards for Aug, Sept and Oct combined. At B2B HIM I got out the water got my wetsuit stripped and then still ran over the mats in 25:40 range.

I did the swim last year on a relay team and did it in 26m52 sec and that including running to the timing chip.
In a lake with no current like I did Ironman FLorida 70.3  I did 1.2 miles in 38 m**sec. Current will make your day easier.

You are too a swimmer!  I started swimming just over a year ago.  1:33-1:35 is definitely a swimmer in my books!  Smile

Notice how I said last year. This year will be different, but if the current is anything like last year then you will see lots of help. Basically my best lake swim prior to the race last year was a mile in around 28min, but I swam the 1.2mi in most probably under 25 out of the water.
Even if you consider me a swimmer there is a huge benefit from the current.
I actually think this swim benefits weaker swimmers even more than good ones. In Olympic races I am normally 6 or 7 minutes behind the leaders out of the swim, but at B2B I was only 3 or 4 minutes behind so I think as a non swimmer (in my mind) I got way more benefit from the wetsuit and current than the more efficient swimmers.

I am headed to Wilmington in a few hours, so good luck everybody and have safe trips down or up to Wilmington. Here is to a great day on Saturday for everyone. Smile

Greg here... 1090

Btw...anyone think the water was kind of cold?  The body was fine but my head felt pretty cold. I swam in Topsail beach though and not at the race site.

Hi folks! Several folks from my club are racing in the Half as well as a BT friend from NC. All asked me about the weather and thought I'd share the latest with all here. At the moment, I don't think it gets too much better than this. This is mostly for the folks doing the Half but it didn't look like there would be too much difference for the Full, except that it will start to drop back down into the 50s after 5PM and into the upper 40s by 9PM. Winds do drop off after the sun sets.

Here's the scoop:

No rain expected at this time.

Race start: Temp 44, winds out of the north at 7, low dewpoint, low humidity, mostly clear skies

9AM: Temp low 50s, winds north 10-15 mph, sunny skies

12 PM: Temp low 60s, winds north 10-15 mph, sunny skies

3 PM: Temp mid 60s, winds north 10-15 mph, mostly sunny skies

The two biggest problems are:

1. It will be a bit chilly coming out of the swim and onto the bike as the wind and low humidity will make it seem like it's colder.

2. Winds...your first leg takes you north, so you'll have a headwind here. That doesn't last long as you turn west and the wind will be a crosswind instead. But, you'll encounter mostly a headwind again when you make the turn onto route 421 later. So, remember not to fight this but shift to a slightly easier gear and spin more than mash to save your legs for the run. But, the good news is that it should be mostly a tail to tail-cross when you turn around on that route and headed into T2. Time to fly back to transition!

Other than that, it's looking like pretty darn good weather for your race!

The only other thing I saw which the models at present are saying aren't going to affect the weather at Wilmington is a pretty strong low pressure system way off the coast. That's what's going to cause the winds but the clouds are forecast to stay offshore. If that comes in a bit more, winds will be up more than they are currently forecast. Perhaps clouds pick up too.

But like I said, right now, looks pretty darn good. Hope you enjoy!

Wishin' all a great time and good luck in your race! Hopin' to be there next year for the Full!

I'm changing to the 6:30 bus from the Hilton to T1 -- assuming that it will get me there in time for body marking and transition bag drop offs for the half.  My wave doesn't go until 8:50
