My other coaching problem is that I have no one local to me that speaks power so I would have to hire someone online.  The closest coach to me (that I know of) that works with power is Shane MacLeod (gsmacleod here on BT) and he's 3.5 hours away in Halifax.

For me, the local part would not be important. The only reason I would want someone local is for the swimming stroke correction. An online coach and a masters coach that see eye to eye would probably be the ideal combo for me.

Shane is one guy I would trust as a coach.

Well the power discussion has my head spinning a bit although can definitely see where having a power meter on a hilly course would be a huge nenefit.  I definitely look forward to using one in the near future.  TrainerRoad has really been a great tool for me.  I am pretty much done with HR as a guide in HIM racing and shorter....just not working well for me.

Yeah, but we tend to over think things often. Bryan CD doesnt use a PM and he races just fine. He also doesn't take it easy on hill climbs the way you would with a PM, but again it works.

Whats a PM???  LOL

i have never raced with a power meter, i usually go by RPE, and make sure HR is in a reasonable area. But like anything i think that takes practice and knowing your body and limitations. Something i would not prescribe a beginner.

I think a PM or some sort of power is necessary for training indoors though, there are too many variables by RPE inside, you really need a benchmark

Another device to let me know I'm weak and slow on the bike

On the coaching topic...

If I'm still driven to tri after 6 months of Army training - I want try to qualify for the Army tri team. To do this, I'd definitely consider a coach.

I'll be back to normal life by July, but I think it'll take time to build my cycling back up. I'm not as concerned with running, because I'll be doing that a bit - or swimming, because I know how to bounce back. If I'm looking at an early season Oly (march or april?) WHEN would you get a coach?

Our local track club starts meeting again in two weeks! I'm excited. I've missed it!

Yeah I guess the online/local thing isn't that big of a deal.  I don't need a swim coach for stroke correction.  I would absolutely trust Shane as well and if I do go with a coach, he'd be on the short list.

"Speed bumps" are starting of at an easy pace and building to 90-95% between the flags then slowing back down to easy.  I think they'd be tough to do in a short pool.  Fun set in a 50 meter pool.

I've never heard of speed bumps either.  Love the workout, do you train LCM all the time?

Yes, I'm very fortunate to get to swim LCM. I had to swim a couple SCYs while on a business trip in June; I thought I was going to go crazy! It felt like: stroke, stroke, flip, stroke, stroke, flip. I have a new respect (sympathy) for the 25 yard swimmers.

Most of my time as a high school swimmer was in a 20 yard pool.  I was really good at turns.

I like that Main Set.  I might give that a whirl tomorrow.  I will skip the long WU though .

1 hour Recovery bike for me this morning.  A 15 month with a fever and thunderstorms means I got about 4 hours of sleep.  Luckily I did not have anything quality planned today....except that burrito at lunch..that was quality.

Hey guys!  I am just shaking my head at the latest from GD - i don't usually chime in on these things but, wow, just wow.

Nice swim this am!

Oh and I didn't check in yesterday - Nice work Neil and Jason!!! Way to rock it.

So, lots of discussion that is way over my head in terms of PMs and such. So far on the bike I do train by HR and RPE. I try to keep it aerobic by monitoring that and my cadence.  I can tell when I am cooking my legs too much.  I have a lot of work to do on the engine and I think if i were to really focus on improving my bike leg the first stop would be Jorge's plan.  But right now, maintenance of the limited bike fitness I have is the priority. We'll see in a few weeks where my head is at with training.

As for me. I need to keep myself occupied - and work is a poor choice with the interwebs going on and half my team being on vacation - because i am beginning to obsess.  Can't change anything. I can keep training and be smart but obsessing and worrying won't help anything.  The good thing is this weekend is my sister's wedding back in my hometown so i actually need to turn off my 'Ironman brain' and be there for her and think about bridesmaids' dresses, getting hair done, etc.

I also had a great swim yesterday morning. I go to a coached group and she had a set with all short and fast work but she knows that IM is coming up so she had me do some longer work with focus on picking it up in the second half.  I am slow but she said I was looking good form-wise so that was a good confidence booster.

I just remembered something from my run this morning.  I ran 12k at around 6am and it was a bit surreal.  As I was running down the road from my house, there was a layer of thick fog hanging about 20 feet above me.  When I got to the end of the road, I turned and started going up a hill.  I got up to the layer of fog and as I went into it, the air temperature jumped up significantly (easily 5 degrees C or more).  So much that my head was warm and my feet were cold.

I've never experienced anything like that, very cool!    I was wishing I had my phone to take a picture.

That plan is gold, my bike power improved so much over the winter from that.  I expect I will be following it again this year once the snow flies.

I started with Jorge's plan after my first season and saw huge improvements. I then did a 20 week plan of Jorge's and was really happy. He is a great coach. Fantastic!

During the whole time I just collected data. Didn't really do anything with it, just collected it.

That was the basis on which I built plans moving forward, slowly adding load and tweaking for strengths and weakness.

Sorry if the whole TSS/NP.....blablabla sounds so complicated. It actually isn't but it's not for everyone. Just getting out and riding/running/swimming is the way to go. I just happen to be a data geek and love to understand the science behind it.

For me the thing it has helped the most if slowly adding load and intensity without injury.

If people are interested but don't know where to start, I hope they won't hesitate to ask their questions here, that's what we are all here for, to help each other.

I was going to tell her to put it all in a blender, dilute with water and put in a camelback.

I think a fizz tablet would also help for endurance.

And just to add to Marc's comments, the Jorge winter plan is also available on the Trainerroad platform for those with a trainer and no power meter.

i will be starting trainer sessions this month as i get ready for Cyclocross season.

Jorge's workouts are solid.  I just hate the trainer, and weather here is rideable almost year round, so I can't get myself to stick to it.

Chris hasn't checked in for a while now, so I'm going to assume he's enjoying his time on Maui.  He's supposed to ride Haleakala tomorrow.

Hey guys, checking in. Last two days have been light. Did some diving yesterday, swam 3 miles this morning then spent the day on a neighboring island of lanai. Yeah, tomorrow is Haleakala. A little nervous about it but will just do the best I can. With today's 3 miler I've swum over 67,000 yards this month. Highest month by probably 25,000 yards. Wish me luck tomorrow.
