I don't know, Kirsten.  I was having the same problem with the Ravenna before I stopped running in August, so those definitely need to go.

The Trance felt ok, but they just felt so heavy and like they were "too much" a lot of the time.  It's really frustrating.

Jen, you are tugging at my heart here. I have found shoes to be so very personal. I have tried a bit of everything and all I can say is that you'll find something, just keep after it. I know you are a Brooks fanatic, but have you tried any other brands?

I have. I used Saucony for awhile, but I didn't like them in the long run. It's just really frustrating!

I was using the Saucony Guides for a while but I have found the Brooks Ghosts to be better for me overall.  I switched back to the Saucony (Rides this time) after the great orthotics debacle of 2012-2013 but I felt like I was wearing clown shoes.  I think that the Rides flared out a bit too much in the heel for me.  I went back to the Ghosts and so far so good (knock wood!).  Anyway, they have redesigned the Rides since I used them this time last year...

Follow up questions:

  • Can you were the Trances to work?  Bring another pair of shoes and do the two hours today, three hours tomorrow thing with them?
  • Can you return the Trances and talk to the running store about alternatives?
  • Do you have any kind of insert in them?  Superfeet, etc?

Oh, I know.  Kevin's mountain biking friend was not doing much riding leading up to their big Moab trip last fall.  We posted on Facebook that he needed more .  He was so embarrassed!  He explained again and again Time In The Saddle!

Hi, I'd love to join!

I've been on BT for a few years now and was with the SWBKRUN MG until it disbanded before Christmas. I've really enjoyed the group thing and learned heaps.

Anyway, here's my Bio:

NAME: David Simpson
STORY: I'm 46 and live in Noosa in Queensland, Australia. I was born and raised in the UK and first came to Oz for a bit of fun in my 20's and just couldn't settle when I returned home. After a few years trying to sort out a visa I managed to emigrate and became an Australian citizen soon after.

I always played a lot of sport but never really considered myself sporty, I just played for fun. At Uni I played rugby and did a lot of drinking. I also played squash until my 30's and then decided to enter the City2Surf race in Sydney and that got me into running. I ran the Gold Coast marathon a couple of years ago (3:52) but have stuck to shorter distances since - those last 10ks are just too hard on the knees!

We moved up from Sydney to Queensland 4 years ago and I bought a bike, joined BT and started triathlons. I've done a few sprints, some Oly's and last year did Ironman Australia in Port Macquarie finishing in 13hrs 14mins.

FAMILY STATUS: Married, 3 kids aged 15,12 and 10 plus 2 labradors
CURRENT TRAINING: I'm in a slacker phase at the moment post-Christmas, I'm going to start a run rehab 6 week course I bought off the net next week and will have to start training properly soon for the Mooloolaba Tri (16th March).

My BIL says he wants to do an IM this year, probably IMWA in December so I'll join him if he doesn't chicken out otherwise my year is open, maybe I'll do some HIM's.
THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: Mooloolaba, the Noosa 2km Ocean Swim (4 weeks from now...!), maybe a half marathon at the Noosa Ultimate Festival in April then see if it's going to be IMWA or not.
2013 RACES/EVENTS: IM OZ, Noosa tri
BODY COMPOSITION: I weigh 77kg and am 6 foot tall and happy with that. I went down to 72kg for my IM but feel more healthy at 77-78kg. I'm currently increasing my protein intake and feel better for it.

Cheers, David

Welcome David!  Between Darren's experience with rugby and drinking and Yanti's recent IMWA success, I expect that you'll fit right in!

Yes, but I'd like to see you fight the current two we've got for it hey, hey, always room for the Republic of Canuckistan! Would be humbled and honored by your presence. You are a great athlete, most generous, and most of all, CLEAR. Something I often manage not to be.

Ah well, I was counting Kirsten who actually lives there, not Monica the deserter.  I mean, we already counted her as one of our three Chicagoland residents.

Jen, another thought I had while running this morning was that your foot changes, or at least mine has. I started with some NB's which were a good stability shoe. The Saucony Guide was next, and they had less stability then the NB's. Now I wear Asics 2170's and Tri Noosa's which seem closer to neutral then where I started. I occasionally put on a pair of Sauc Rides that I have as well, and those are neutral also. It may be time to head over to the Running Store and have them do some analysis, if that is possible.

Interesting article.  I've never done a race with a running buddy but I have done 100k charity rides with groups a lot of times.  If I feel like I can't keep up and need to move to another group, I always say "Go on!" to let them know that they can drop me with no hard feelings.  In fact, a lot of those rule apply to group rides.

Thanks for sharing!

I did WDW with my sis. I was tuckered out at the end (it was my first) so I gave her the go sign with a mile left. She waited anyway. The run buddy dynamic is an interesting one, to say the least.

STORY: Wanna be athlete. I am 50 years old, widowed, and have led a very sedentary life. That all changed last year when I took control of my life. I started biking and so far I have lost almost 90 pounds. I have another 60 to go, and I want to be at goal by September 2014.

FAMILY STATUS: Single

CURRENT TRAINING: Starting the couch to sprint training next week!

THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: Lake Marion Triathlon - Short Course

2013 RACES/EVENTS: None

BODY COMPOSITION: 87 pounds down, 60 to go!

I am as new as a newbie can be, but I have my mind set on this and I WILL do it. I don't care if I am dragging my own carcass across the finish line!

Congratulations, and you will certainly get there, and across the finish line ... I have to say that last line is hysterically funny. Welcome, Jill!

When I do the spartan races with my brothers they have to wait for me since it is their job to throw me over the walls!

As long as I can drag my hide out of my nice, warm bed in the cold, dark morning, I'm planning a return to Masters tomorrow with the ART guru's blessing.  I'm to keep my distance to 500-1000M and take it easy.  Lesson learned from last time, I will obey this time!  Elliot, if you are on deck tomorrow, you will not draw me into kicking workouts!!

ermagawd I can't keep up!  And I have to go to class!  Ok, welcome David and Marc.  I know there is one other new Manatee still, I will get there I promise!  Nice to have another Aussie on board.  Marc, I am not French Canadienne, BUT, I was in French Immersion from la maternelle jusqua my premiere annee a l'Universite.  I *used* to be fluent, but have lost a lot as I don't use it.  But if you need another frenchie to jump into the water with the Manatees, I can fake it .  Nice to have you hear.

Oh, and you 'Muricans may not steal Monica, she is ours.
