Tires on my roadie are old and awful. 4 puncture flats in the two weeks I've owned it...

I used to run Gatorskins on my old tri bike. While they weren't totally bomb-proof, they worked. Any reason to look elsewhere? The roadie will mainly be used for training and fun.

Also - tube patches. What kind are you using? Anything I should know before I patch?

(my old tri bike came with 60+ tubes, so I never patched a tube, just pulled a new one out of the box. I don't have a massive stockpile of 700c's, so I need some recommendations)

I use Continental GP4000S during training while in season.  They're pretty flat resistant, and roll well enough for me to hang on with the stronger riders I group ride with.  I use Seca Survivor (flat resistant) tires in the off season when the training isn't as intense.  If I use the Suvivor tires in season, I'll get dropped during group rides and my training suffers.

I just changed out my GP4000S tires today as I had got my 4th flat in 3 weeks.  The tires were pretty worn down...maybe 2000 miles.  But they wear much faster when I do a lot of climbing on this hill with tons of switchbacks.  If I straight roads with less cornering...they last about 3000 miles.

I use the standard patch kit from the LBS that uses glue.  Those sticker patches are garbage.  They're cheap and very small, so it's not a bad idea to carry them as a last resort, but they are not very reliable.

So what I do is use new tubes in my tires, and carry patched tubes as my spare.  When I flat, I put the punctured tube in my pocket to patch when I get home, and use the spare patched tube.  When I patch the punctured tube at home, I let it dry for a few minutes, then put air in and dunk it in a bucket of water to make sure the patch is good.  Bubbles will come out of even the smallest hole.  Then I put that patched tube in my saddle bag to use as a spare.

Thank you!

I've got the sticker ones, and I had one leak on me already. Which was fun - because I then flatted with the new tube on the same ride when I picked up some nasty, spiky thing in the road. Will definitely pick up ones with glue.

Those Seca Survivor ones look awesome - will definitely keep them in mind for the off-season. My roadie actually has Continental GP4000S on them, but they seem to have seen many, many miles - and many hot Tucson days of cracking and melting... Glad to hear they're good when they've seen less action.

Fred D - 2012-07-18 10:57 PM Just catching up myself. I am currently in sunnyvale California as I have a work course (lab) here. Amazing place here where all the really smart people in the world seem to be centered. I would love to live in California, but probably wouldn't like the cost of living or the traffic. I won't have a huge chance to train tomorrow or the next day, but it is what it is and work is simply more important.

LOVED living in San Diego - though someone else was paying my rent (Uncle Sam!) and I had a roommate, so I could afford to live on the beach. Those were the days...

...but $2400 for a tiny, old, 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom house with no yard just isn't my thing these days. I like a yard to go with my dog.

mndymond - 2012-07-18 12:17 PMHi guys. I have some work to do to catch up. Just finishing up my last 2 weeks of third year! Had a really good swim this morning. Did 3x400m free @ 6:20 and held 5:58, 5:55, 5:53. Pretty decent...working in getting my swim back!
. That's some fast swimming. Hey what field of medicine are you looking to go into?
Emergency via Royal College 5 yr program. We have 2 streams here for emerg with emergency medicine residency or family medicine residency with a plus one in emergency--not sure of the US has similar or not? Probably our 6th most competitive program in Canada after derm, optho, plastics, ENT and rads/nuc med so I'm a Little stressed. I think there are only 65-70 spots in 13 programs across Canada. I will also apply to anesthesia as a back up. I was thinking internal medicine second until I did my anesthesia rotation/experienced GIM and decided otherwise! Haha.

So my knee problems have gone from annoying to troubling.  It seemed like it got better but then I went on vacation and it really bothered me during hiking.  Bothering me still here at home.  It is not a constant pain, no swelling, no general discomfort.  But I move a particular way and it is a sharp pain.  I am able to locate it a bit better now and it is on the inside of leg towards the bottom/middle side of the knee on the side.  Last night I moved it a particular way and although it shouldn't have bothered me after when I bent my leg all the way bent it was very painful.  When I straightened it back out no pain, so only sore when bent.  Walking was fine.  Today I can bend with no pain.

I do not need referrals to see a specialist and I do not have a primary care dr here in Payson.  I would normally head off to ART but that would mean driving to Phoenix or to Tucson to my usual guy.  If you were in my shoes and kind of have concerns about dr's here would you still first go get a primary care and start there or would you just see if you could get into PT?

. Sharp pain can be a potential issue to be worried about. Pain with a bent knee makes me think meniscus. You should ask golfpro as he had these issues I believe this year.

Don't trust any internet diagnosis, but that is the first thing I thought of it sounds very similar the symptoms of this pinched meniscus I have been dealing with for most of the summer. Sharp pain on the interior of the knee when it twists, as well as when it bends maximally. No problems at all on the bike or swim (except on the push off the wall during the rotational part of the flip turn).

PT involved two weeks of the doc trying to tear my kneecap off with his bare hands. It got better from there. Ice the joint where it hurts with an ice cup and behind the knee joint with a bag of peas twice a day and after exercise, No running for 7 weeks, PT 2 times per week for the last 9 weeks that included range of motion testing and both ART and Graston work. Runs for the last two weeks have been 15 minute walking warm up and dynamic stretching, 20 minutes of running, 20 minutes of walking cool down. Responded well and it seems to be finally on the mend - I will find out this weekend. If it does not go well then it probably means I have a slight tear. It would take an MRI to determine that. If I have a setback that is my next step.

I would get it to a doc ASAP.

Well, I was all for going to the dr until I read the bolded.  Now I am just scared.  lol  j/k

Sounds like it could be a meniscus tear to me too. Time to see your friendly neighborhood ortho who will hopefully not do what Rusty described! Ow...!! on the plus side it won't take you 9+ months to see an ortho down there!?

Well folks, I'm improving a bit and able to carry on with some workouts.  I started out doing some jogging with walk breaks.  I did my bike commute yesterday.  I'm avoiding bike routes with tough climbs at the moment though.  I also have a bit of jitters about getting back in the pool but maybe next week.

I was surprised how sore my legs were.  It's amazing how quickly you lose strength after a relatively small amount of time off your feet.

Hope you start feeling back to normal soon!

The 4000s have wear indicators on them.  If you don't see them for sure time to change them.  They are just little hole indentations on the tire.  If you do get new ones of those Performance puts them on sale all the time.  Also, they are directional.

They finally opened the forest here in Payson.  Living in the national forest can be nice, until they close the darn thing and then there is nothing to do.  So back to being chased by wildlife on my trail runs and I really want to get out on the mountain bike a lot more.  I need to find time for that.  Out near where Bryan lives they have some DU's in the early season and some are off road which I think I might do.

Catwoman - 2012-07-18 8:22 PMI use a trainer tire for the trainer. Everyday tires are Continental 4000. Rusty, crossing my fingers that your knee continues to improve.

Thanks! This has to go down in my personal record book as the craziest "get out of town" week I have ever "enjoyed." We have been having these tremendous storms in Atlanta and on Sunday night we had a huge 100' tall mature white oak come down on our house. We got it buttoned up quickly but the power was out until yesterday morning. Another storm rolled in yesterday afternoon and I was loading up the car to head to the airport another one of our oaks dropped a giant limb on the car and through the windshield - fortunately for me I had just gone in to grab the rest of our bags. Without thinking I jumped in and pulled it back under cover and so of course got tiny shards of glass all in my hands, forearms and back of legs that I am still picking ou this morning. All is good - our flight was delayed by the weather but we made it to Albany around midnight. Headed to Lake Placid right now. Yee-Haw.

Finally got in a 20min test this morning on the CompuTrainer.  Although, I didn't hit the 260W I hoped for, it came in at 257 ave. for 3.3W/kg at 170lbs.  Last test was early March with a 238 ave. for 2.9 W/kg at 180lbs.  So, improvement.  I think I've tapped out the weight side of that equation, so it's only going to get tougher.  The class instructor told me he thought my eyeballs were going to pop out of my head at about 19:20, so it sounds like I was doing it right.

Rusty, stay away from trees.  Jeez.

Rusty - wow...not a great start to the race week but glad you are ok.  thats crazy.  Good luck this weekend in LP...have fun out there.

Goosedog - nice improvement on the bike.  I have gone up less than 20 watts and it took alot of hard work to get that.

I use GP4000s outside and love them.  I have a separate rear wheel with a trainer tire on it which works great.  Takes 30 seconds to switch wheels out.  If i was going to use just one tire for outside and also on the trainer though I would definitely go with the gatorskin...lots of people have had good luck with them.

I am having some serious trouble getting my arse out of bed each morning to get my workouts in.  Mid to Late season motivation issues for me.  Need to get my arse in gear though for this HIM in 4 weeks.

TSimone - 2012-07-19 10:54 AM Ryan-I'm in the same boat. I'm just perpetually tired and the aches are starting to catch up. Thinking about having my wife put a shock collar on me and zap me every time I hit the snooze button. Seriously, though, something's gotta give. Still lots of work to be done.

Glad to hear i am not the only one. Not glad that you're having motivation issues but i am in the same boat.  I am getting a little frustrated with myself especially this week. Last week I just took it as fatigue from the HIM but i am just one month out.  I just need to keep going!! No stopping now and resting on laurels ... sigh.
