Has anyone else noticed how so many of the HIM swims look like they have been WAY short this year? I can think of 4 that are seriously suspect, though few admit it. Seems like it's either that, or else people have become part fish and can easily do sub 30 minute swims with rarely anyone going over 40 minutes any more. Maybe on race reports people are hesitant to admit it because a great HIM swim still looks great, but c'mon, why can't the organizers get this right?

My HIM's swim was short..I did it in 33' and my IM swim in 1:46.

I wish I knew how short it was. They admit is was short but not by how much.

I absolutely 100% agree with you.  Unfortunately, all of mine seem to be too long

I read that some 40-44 AGer went 19 at Augusta!

Augusta was super quick, but it was not neccesarily because it was short. That area has had huge amounts of rain and it was raining in the days right up until the race, so the current was raging for the race. Oh and there was also the resident gator making sure nobody slacked off.

Two friends of mine raced Augusta, when I tracked their day I was surprised with the swim times. But knowing the recent rains in the area and it being a point to point swim with current their I understood how they could have swum those times.. Knowing their pace times they were seperated about right. So the race day conditions did set the field up for a great day.

Augusta swim was awesome!

It STORMED the night before, with some heavy rain and thunder and lightning. Right before we jumped in the water, the wind picked up. I commented to my AG to put up their sails, as this was going to be a fast swim. I don't think it was all that short, though.

THe race director stated that we had a half-knot of favorable speed. W00T!

Need to take note on the short swim venues and make sure to sign up for those.  Now if it just had a long bike and short run also I would be setLaughing

I've got a question, then- if you did a race with a ridiculously fast swim, even if it wasn't short, per se (maybe just with the current), do you take that overall time as a PR?

Not to be a jerk, but the two prominent examples are SOR and Augusta- both have almost every competitor under 40min, with most people breaking 30minutes, while some people even posting 19minute swims. Insane!! If the swim is 8-10minutes off, even if it's off for everyone, is your PR still legit?

I posted this in the Official Augusta 70.3 thread but hadn't received a response yet:

I did not know until today that this race's swim is a point-to-point swim in a river with a strong current carrying you - AND wetsuit legal! For those of you who participated, do you feel your swim time is a little inflated? Are you okay with that?

I kind of see it like setting up a bike course so that you only have a tail wind behind you (I know people who have done this in training)... not sure how I feel about that. Just curious how you feel!

I swam 2 'suspect' races this summer and I don't count the times as PR's.  How am I supposed to feel after a 'legit' race if I compare it to the 'suspect' race?  And I certainly can't plan my next race or my training based on that PR.

The only 'plus' for me is everyone has to swim the same course.

Oh, you are suuuch a jerk.

Just kinda playing Devil’s advocate here…

Don’t the course and the conditions always play a role in your overall time, for better or worse? Do you have to race the same event in a shorter time in subsequent years in order to claim a PR? E.g., I finished a HIM this year that had a rolling bike course and a couple of big hills on the run. If I do a different HIM next year on a flat course and PR, should I not get to count that as a PR because the course might not have been as challenging as my previous race?

That question will always be asked no matter what course. If I go do wildflower and then Ironman 70.3 Worlds in Clearwater what is my PR???? I can gaurantee, barring accidents or mechanicals, that Clearwater will be substantially quicker, so what is my PR? If you want to have quick times as PR's you pick quick courses to race. I am doing my 1st HIM in 6 weeks and I picked the course 1) because it is close to home, but also because it will be a salt water, wetsuit legal, incoming tide swim. I suck at swimming so I picked the course because it will help me. Whatever time I finish in will be my PR over the 70.3 distance because that will be a cold hard fact. I will have travelled 70.3mi in X time.
If you want to run a PR in a 5k race will you pick a panacke flat course or one that that climbs 100ft/mile?

Now all that being said, I also realize that whatever my swim time is in 6 weeks, it will not be that quick at my next HIM, but I will do the next one when it comes and deal with that then.

The same goes for Beach to Battleship 1/2 IM and IM.  The swim is WITH the current so athletes can click off some really fast swim times and pull off some stellar IM Pr's.  Chattanoogna Waterfront tri also has a point to point river swim with the current, as well as a handful of others.

As for me, I can only use my time from Augusta to compare it to the Augusta course.  I know that if I did a HIM without a swim with the current that my swim time would have been about 10 mins slower.  I am well aware of that.  And if anyone were to ask me my swim time I always make sure to let them know it was fast due to the current.  I did an olympic back in May that was a point to point ocean swim with the current.  People were blown away with my swim time and I just had to laugh when I told them it was WITH the current, knowing I'm not that fast in the water.

The current in the river for Augusta on Sat wasn't all that fast as it was on Sun for the race.  But that was partially due to the weather- we got a pretty good thunder storm the night before the race and that really had a large part of why the current was so strong for the race.  Also, the swim course itself was a little short and I think they had to make up for the lack of distance with the run into T1 and the run out of T2.  We had a pretty decent run into T1 and out of T2.

I personally don't have a problem if they would have made the Augusta swim 1/2 with the current and 1/2 against it.  That way, it's a little more "true".  But...I guess they make the race however they want.

I think it's still a PR, but you have to put an asterix next to it.  Laughing

Speaking of current-assisted swims, check out the swim times in the Philly Olympic distance this year:http://www.phillytri.com/results.html

Same as Augusta, the river was running high and fast.  There were several people in the mid-teens.
