If you love or even like aviation you have to see this video.  I have flown nearly every type of civilian aircraft and always wished for a ride in a military jet.  Here is as close as I will probably ever get.

Even the pilot gets excited, yelling out yahoooo.

That was great, thanks!  I have always thought "I bet they aren't as close to each other as they look".  I no longer think that.

I was an F-16 crew chief (the plane flown by the Thunderbirds) and my roommate got a ride for recruiting three people in a month. He yakked all over the place despite being a private pilot. The pilots take pride in making their ride-alongs hurl.

Well I can tell you first hand they are close. The interesting thing is that all jet pilots experience this. Close tactical formations while flying in the clouds (because closer is the only way to see the other plane) or on the tanker at night. It's pretty much a rush but with it comes a lot of sacrifices for sure. Those guys do put on a pretty good show though

About half way down the page is the story of ROTC Cadet Barf.

Great video!

I thought that was the passenger. I'm sure you have heard the pilots during shows... complete professionalism and precision. Does not at all take away from a cool video. I would be yelling yahhoo too... in between ralphing. Thanks for posting.

On the topic of flying - I looked into taking flying lessons. They told me about $8-10k to get licensed. I might be adding this to my long-term goals. Would be nice to be able to hop into a plane and fly to the islands whenever the mood strikes.

Just make sure you investigate all of the costs over the lifetime of owning or operating an aircraft - even if you only rent to fly. My Dad is a private pilot (instrument rated). Even after being able to purchase his own airplane (a sexy, fast one, purrrr), he balks at the cost of jet fuel and annual maintenance (this is a HUGE cost, required by the FAA) and flies maybe once a month now. Just too expensive.

I'm with axterra.  I've been to multiple air shows and thought the same thing.  This video proves how close they are!

Very cool to see that they really are that close to each other... but if I were in one of those things, I'd lose my lunch for sure.  And my breakfast.  And possibly my dinner from the night before....

I never said I wanted to buy. I want to get my license.

I believe that aircraft falls into one of the 3 Fs which one should never buy. Rent. I might, however, buy a sailboat anyway. I'll do the math, then decide. But that decision is 2 years away.

I have owned three planes and yes there is an expense involved in being a part of that club.  The thing to do is to know the costs and put them into your flying.

Engines have a life time with a scheduled overhaul, and generally everything has to be top notch as there is no just pulling over to fix something that doesn't sound right.

My one plane was a Grob 109 motorglider that had a VW engine in it, used regular car gas and could be tuned and fixed by an auto mechanic.  The best of both worlds, it took off like an airplane and once you got to your desired altitude, you turned off the motor, feathered the prop and could soar as long as your bladder held out.  When ready to go home, you simply started the engine, feathered the prop and flew home for a regular landing.

If you are interested in flying, but want a cheaper way to go, look into the sport aviation level.  It takes much less time, training, and gets you up into a wonderful experience.

Most flying schools have a discovery flight for around $100 or so where you can go up and actually fly.

Give it a try. Just another expensive sport, and then you can get a folding bike and go biking too.

They are not on autopilot.  I can not fathom all the micro corrections that they must make to to stay in formation that close.

Still expensive to rent... Uncle has his license.  He hardly uses it due to costs involved.
