I can't seem to find much info on how old kids should be before you take them in a jogging stroller.

Was considering doing a 5k this weekend.  Twin boys are 3.5 months.

Would they survive?

Pardon me, I got a chuckle from the question. As a dad, grand dad I can honestly state.

YES, they would survive.

But some MOM may overrule me.

Have a great day, if not this weekend, then many more to come.

I don't have children yet and therefore no experience with jogging strollers but I was able to find this..

I have boy/girl twins and I think I waited until they were 7 months old to start running with them. They are 17 months now and they love the runs. I remember when I was researching joggers many companies said 2-3 months as a recommendated start age. If they can hold their heads well you would probably be fine.

Congrats and I hope you are getting some sleep. I remember being exhausted when they were 3.5 months. It gets easier!!!!

as the one ahead of me said - its all about head control. Some babies have it earlier, others have it latter. Once they can control their head so it doesn't flop around like a rag doll, they are good to go.

I used a carseat adapter with mine but not sure for how long, it's all a blur. Mine was preemie too so I'd say if your twins have pretty good head control you should be fine. Maybe put some towels rolled up to prop them up.

But yes, they will survive.

Everything I heard was "When they can hold their heads up on their own".  It was the same answer for the jogger stroller, the back pack and the burley.

A lovely nebulas answer that I despised.  I generally went with 7-9 months....

No scientific basis, just when I felt comfortable with what I say.

If it leans back a bit they'd probably be fine, assuming they have reasonable neck strength. I waited for 6 months anyway because I didn't want to get my wife mad at me.

My wife said I had to wait til his 4 month check up and the doctors ok but I snuck out a few days early. On our first run about 2.5 miles into it I stepped on the security strap and flipped the jogger over. My son freaked out and I think I sh@# myself. Everything was fine and the doc said as long as the head control is there they are fine.

Now almost 2 years later, and about 15 races under are belts I can honestly say enjoy it as we have. I love to race but racing with my little buddy is the best. We have a 10 miler next weekend and our still undefeated in the stroller division Wink

Ditto on the head control. I saw this guy who wanted to run with his kid in a backpack. I talked him out of it. That kid would have had brain damage. I saw previously saw the dude powerwalking with his kid facing outward in a backpack. It wasn't a good thing at all.

Phil and Teds makes a jogging stroller that you can put the, umm... I forget what they call it. It is a replacement for a car seat and i looks like a tray instead of a seat so the baby lay's flat. Usually used by parents of Preemies (ie. my wife and are on the last one). It comes with bolsters for the entire body and head so the head rolling is not an issue. You pay through the nose for the stroller but you will never buy different one after having it.

I would think that keeping the babies temperature normal would be as iportant at that age as anything else. Don't forget that.

Everything about jogging strollers that I have read (or used) says that babes should be 7 months or older---OR with good head/neck control.

You can provide additional stability for the head by putting a rolled up towel, or some other soft thing, between their heads and the side of the stroller.  And, yeah, lean 'em back.

Thanks all.  Read this thread to my wife and she said there is no way I am doing it.

Their neck strength is decent, but not quite that well.  Here is an obligatory pic of the future racers.

Ask your pediatrician - mine gave me the OK based on my daughter's head control to start running with her at 3 months.  I did, and she did great

The stroller I have reclines a bit, and with the bigger tires, I actually thought she jiggled LESS in the jogger than she did when I took her for walks in her regular stroller!

Um, I'm a bit late on this one... but I wanted to put in my 2 cents.

I had a Baby Jogger II.  I'm not sure why the neck control is a big issue, since you can prop them any way you want to.  My son was an extreme preemie and I had him out in it before his due date.  Snugged him up like crazy and rolled blankets all around him and each side of his head/neck.  In fact, at that time he was still on a heart/lung monitor which I carried along in the pocket and it never ever sounded an alarm while he was in there.  Keep in mind, when he was in his infant car seat, it would go off on occassion.  So.. I guess you can say the jogger was more comfy for him and his physical therapists said the visual stimulation he got from being in there was a huge benefit.

I got the infant sling for my chariot. Will use it walking pretty early, and running after a month or two.

Infant Sling

Give your baby added lateral support while providing maximum comfort and stability. The hammock-like design helps provide a smooth ride. Your baby is reclined and still able to look around and watch the world go by.

Not for use while cycling. From approximately 1-10 months of age.

congrat on the twin boys,,, if they are both 3.5 months that equals one 7 month old so I'd say go for it..  then again my daughter is 20 and I'm constantly amazed that she survived the gary father logic as a child

We had the carseat adapter for our Bob stroller, which worked really well.  Unless you're doing a trail run, they should be fine in the carseat adapter.

Our daughter is 9 months now and does not like walking pace in the stroller, it has to be running or she gets a little fussy.  Running and chasing Mom is even better.

For stroller, I'd agree with the "when they can hold their head from flopping around".

For bike trailer, it is much older as they should be wearing a helmet, too.   Probably 18-24 months before they have the neck stregth to hold up a head and the added weight of a helmet.

If it were me, I'd wait until next season until taking them to a race.  They won't remember anything or have any fun at 3.5 mos anyway.

I was told at least 10 months if not 1 year. Has to do with head control but also the ability of their muscles to support the bone structure. The person who told me this may well be full of crap, but I haven't felt comfortable bringing the little one out until recently.

I did a similar thing.  My daughter was born in April last year and I just went with concept that as long as she was in her original car seat I just put her in that in a rear facing postion (just like the car).  When she out-grew that I switched putting her in the regular position.  I liked the rear facing car seat setup becacause I could keep an eye on her.

Do what you and your spouse are comfortable with.

It also depends on the stroller.  The BOB sport utility stroller has duel shocks and the children can be layed back pretty far.  We added the Kiddopotamus Snuzzler ( http://www.kiddopotamus.com/p_snuzz.php  to keep the kiddos heads straight.  We were out running at 6 weeks, but my wife is a family practice Doc so she gave the thumbs up.

I agree with those who say that a jogging stroller is best recommended for a baby who is already able to have a stable neck control/sit unassisted (around 8-12 m.o, the case is different for each baby, though). It's for your LO safety and security. Smile
