Subject: Women's Entry Level Road Bike

My wife is 5'4" and is interested in getting an entry level road bike.  Please share your thoughts on a good make and model, things to consider, etc.  She is not interested in triathlons but would like to do some longer rides, not on her mountain bike.

 Thanks.

First start with how much you want to spend and if you want a carbon frame or not. That will narrow your selection.  Second, you might want to consider a WSD bike. (Woman's Specific Design) This is the abbreviation for Trek bikes, but several different brands have the same idea, bike frames that are designed to specifically fit the smaller proportions of a woman.  With you wife being 5'4", this might work for her. Also, depending on how comfortable she is with changing gears, having 2 gears in front vs 3 might make her life a little easier. (Unless you plan on attacking some monster hills )

Good Luck

We're definitely looking as bikes designed for women:  the Specialized Dolce and the lower end of the Trek line (I forgot what they're called).  She's got narrow shoulders and likes the smaller handlebar and the extra brakes on the top of the Dolce.

I ride a Trek 1000 (54 cm) WSD and love it.  I tried regular bikes and they didn't fit me as well.  I'm 5'6'' and all bike shops wanted me on a 56 cm men's bike. Too big.  Tell her I wanted the top brakes too, but I got over it really fast.

If she is interested in cycling, you might as well get her a decent bike.  Get here a road bike with an aluminum frame, carbon fork and, at the very least, Sora components. Take a look at the brands of bikes available in your area.  If, for instance, Giant is available in your area, then the Giant OCR W3 would be a good beginner road bike to look into for her.  The suggested retail price for this model is $750.  Take a look at other brands, such as the Trek 1.2 WSD, Cannondale Synapse Feminin 7, Specialized Dolce and KHS Flite 300 ... as well as others that may be available.

Key is bike fit.

Finding a bike shop that fits women well and finds a bike to fit her not tries to sell her a bike they have in stock.

Find a shop that will work with her to find a bike that fits her well, have her fit, set a price range and then trust the bike shop to recommend the bike that fits her best.

I ride a traditional tri bike but need a women's specific road bike. I had an awesome Orbea carbon road bike with ultegra probably more than you are looking to spend.

What is your price range would you guess?

Isn't that store in MI that has an awesome website about bike fit in your neck of the woods? If I lived in MI I would consider checking on that shop. Honestly finding a bike shop that you and your wife wants to work with is #1 more than this or that brand.

My bike fit guy is helping me get a new cyclecross bike. He is writing up a recommendation based on my fit what a custom bike geometry would be then what stock bikes options I have  and will recommend which will fit me best. I think that is a real smart way to buy a bike.

My wife has the Specialized Dolce WSD she likes it alot. Plus it comes in Black and Pink which matches her shoes/helmet/tri-suit.

She is about the same size.

I'm racing with the tri team for the LBS with the Dolce, which she likes, so things are leaning that way already:  aluminum frame, carbon fork, $800ish, female owner/bike fitter, and good pre-existing relationship with the people.

We're just curious if there are any big issues or bike love stories to consider.  Everyone's comments have been very helpful.

I went to two different LBS's and was shown the same Trek 1000 by both, with both were selling for $700.  I guess it depends on your price range, but whatever you do make sure it's the proper size for her.

I have a Specialized Dolce and Like how it fits.  I am 5'3" and probably shorter in my trunk than average.

My husband is a former bike mechanic and he had me go with the REI brand - Novara. I have the Carema. I wanted to get the Specialized but he said that the Novara had better components for a better price . . . you might want to check them out if have an REI near you.

I have the Specialized Dolce and I bought it for the fit. When I went shopping I was planning on getting a Trek and the Specialized fit so much better for me. I have been very happy with it!

I sprang for the Specialized Dolce Elite ($1100), for fit and ride. Tried out the Dolce and the Trek WSD 1000. Trek was okay, but the Dolce Elite was smoother. It's got a Tiagra/105 mix which is pretty decent. This year's model is white and pink - mine is white and purple - wish I'd bought it this year I'm 5'3", long legs, short torso and small hands. I've ridden a regular bike (a Giant OCR, not wsd) belonging to a woman about my height but not my proportions, and the reach was too stretched out. Just find something that fits her well.

My sister loves her specialized Dolce. She has raced it for 2 seasons so far without any trouble. She paid $580 at LBS.  Only upgrades made so far are wheels, tires, clip on aeros, and changed crank from triple to double. Goodluck

I have a Trek WSD 1500 and love that bike to death.  I am a 5'4" and the bike shop I got it from did a great job sizing it.  Take the time and just shop around.  Find a bike shop with all these different brands and see if they will let you ride them around the parking lot to see how they feel.  It is worth the time!!

Glad you asked the question!  I too am looking for a road bike, and my eyes are crossed at this point from all the searching on the net.  I'm about 5'6" and looking for a women specific bike between $500-$900.  I saw the felt zw95, gorgeous, about a grand with clip in pedals and shoes.  It's my first tri so a little nervous on spending that much.

Last year My fiance and I went to the LBS that I got my felt s32 from and asked about a road bike for her.  She's not very tall (5'2") so the choices were limited.  She wanted to do a couple tri's but be comfortable and be able to commute and joy ride the bike mostly.  We also didnt want to spend a that much because we bought all here gear at the same time.

They couldnt say enough good things about the ZW100, for the money.  It has brakes up top, I believe shimano sora and tripple components (she wanted the granny gear because she was afraid of getting stuck on huge hills).  It came in her size (43cm),  Aluminum frame, carbon fork, overall a really sweet bike.  She loves it, I love it, it looks great and didnt break the bank. Its served her pretty well in the 2 tri's she's done.

Oh yeah and thats part of felt's "ZW" line, which is women specific.

This original thread is over 3 years old so prices, models and such are out of date other than couple posts above me.

If you are new to the sport and unsure if you will continue, consider using the bike you have for first tris and once you are sure you want to continue, buy a bike. You will get a better bike if you look at used bikes in the under $1000 price range.

My first bike was a Specialized Dolce and it was great because I am small (female).  5'3" with short torso and short arms...and short legs...I'M SMALL!  Recommend it.
