La Grange, Georgia

Georgia Multisports Production
76F / 24C
Overcast
Total Time = 2h 30m 9s
Overall Rank = 53/251
Age Group = 25 - 29
Age Group Rank = 6/14
Pre-race routine:

Got up around 5:15, made coffee and "woke up". Ate PB & H (honey) sandwich on the way to the race. Body marking and transition setup. Realized I was on the first rack with the "big boys" due to the swim time seeding at this race. Found everyone and chatted for a bit and then walked down to the porta-potty and then for a quick dip in the water.
Event warmup:

Tried to get into the water to warm-up a little, but they were pulling people out as we stepped in. Oh well, who needs to warm-up anyway.
Swim
  • 23m 12s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 25s / 100 yards
Comments:

I think that the lack of sufficient buoys actually helped me in the long run as all I could do was trust that the fast people that I was drafting off of were sighting correctly, so I just kept my head down and on their toes. Ending up working out well.
What would you do differently?:

Can't say I would do anything differently. Faster than normal pool time, so I'm pleased.
Transition 1
  • 01m 5s
Comments:

No flying mount here, but the tips Matt R gave at the transition clinic paid off. I think this was one of my fastest T1s.
What would you do differently?:

Try to rack a little closer to center. I was on the complete inside end.
Bike
  • 1h 12m 56s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.44 mile/hr
Comments:

Good hard push on the bike, but still seemed comfortable.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing I can think of right now
Transition 2
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

A little slower to catch breath off bike and the guy next to me dropped his bike on me when he was racking it, but other than that, pretty quick. Did the Dollar trick with attaching race belt to visor and was out the door quite nicely.
What would you do differently?:

Try to get used to no socks for 5 and 10 Ks. I think I could go sub 1:00 if I didn't have to fumble with socks.
Run
  • 51m 46s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

Got a couple of cold chills and realized I might be short on something so I stopped at every water station and dumped one to stay cool and drank some from the other. I felt like my body could have pushed it a little more, but was nervous about going to much more due to the possible lack of fluids/electrolytes. Pleased that I just slowed the pace a little instead of walking though.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure yet, but definately need to make a few adjustments to make sure I can truly push it as hard as my body will let me.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed to water bottles and stood in the sprayer tent for about 5 minutes and then chatted with folks and grabbed a beer to load the sodium levels. (and to enjoy a well deserved beer) :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing other than my own nervousness on the run

Event comments:

Normal GA Multisport-run event. Most things are well done with a normal issue on the swim. Pleased with everything else.

Course: Clockwise half oval. Point to point. 2 by 2 (just like the ark, except we were going into the water and they were trying to get out :)) time trial. Not nearly enough bouys for my taste. I seriously could not see the buoy until after about 100 yards after I passed each previous one. Lucky for me, the fastys that I was drafting off of were able to see them and swim in a straight line.

I had a really good day also (for me)
Finished 5/31 age group and 15/65 masters.
Took a full 5 mins off last years time. I agree, the swim was confusing. Really wanted to go sub 8's on the run, but hammered it on the bike, so paid the price coming out of T2. Rode most of the bike with a rockin ladie, Kelly Crouse. She could hammer and we kept passing each other the whole bike. She avg 21.3mph!! second best of the ladies and missed 1st in her age group by only 23sec.
Overall very happy with my result, first HARD/SPEED race of the season as I have been training slow and long for Fla 70.3 back in May.
Looking forward to Callaway Gardens Altra Sprint next weekend!!

For someone who said that they weren't going to do races just a short time ago, you are not doing this stuff pretty well!

Great race!
