One of my favorite bands for the past few years has been Fur Patrol out of New Zealand.  Although not super unknown I've been listening to Jem and Lamb a bunch lately, I like those Bristol bands.  And definitely not unknown anymore but John Butler Trio absolutely rocks, especially live.  He just changed out the trio though so I don't know much about the two new guys.

rbekkelund - 2008-07-02 12:44 PM Now every time I mention this band I get the "never heard of them" but they know the song. The Toadies They are a favorite of mine, kinda crazy for them actually. They are on tour after a long break for a break up in the band. I love them, you have to idea. Anyone heard of them, or do I just have lame friends? (
You just have lame friends......who hasn't heard of the Toadies. I'm from Dallas, so they were pretty popular back in the 90s.....but they got a lot of radio play throughout the country with "Tyler" and "Possum Kingdom"...... Plus "Possum Kingdom was featured on Guitar Hero II...........

I never put the Toadies in context, but just went to itunes and realized that not only have I heard the song, I've been to Possum Kingdom Lake a few times.  Doh!

Atlanta crowd will know this one "Drivin and Cryin" and "Leftover Salmon."

Two of my absolute favorite bands right now: (caveat: must love rock)

SEVENDUST (contains profanity for those of you at work)
They're not super obscure, but under rated IMO.

These two bands get me so pumped up it's unbelievable.

Sevendust is one of the most amazing bands out there. They are horribly under rated and I can't figure out why. They put on one of the best live shows. I've seen them in concert 3 times and got to hang out with them after one concert for about 10 minutes and they were just the coolest guys I've ever met. It boggles my mind that these guys aren't HUGE. I can't say enough how much I love this band.

Gooding Band (or just Gooding on iTunes I believe). They've since broken up and re-formed as Angel/Devil but man what a live show.

A bad YouTube video - if you can get past the bar chatter - but one of my fav songs of theirs

How could I forget to plug Kissing Party from Denver, CO.

I'll be honest that it isn't necessarily my favorite genre of music (indie rock), but I grew up with the lead singer. She's the only girl I've ever punched but I swear it was because I had a crush on her ( I think we were around 11/12) and she stole my hat on the bus.

Gil Scott Heron (R.I.P.) - might be considered the godfather of rap, best known for "The Revolution will not be televised..." but made lots and lots of great, soulful, socially-conscious, groovy def-stuff since the early 70s. Great to see live in smoky little clubs...died not long ago.

Holy thread back from the dead, Batman!

It was fun to look at some of the bands mentioned 3 years ago, and who's hot now.....

The National (won a Grammy last year!) .... Bon Iver... Michael Franti.... etc.

Eddie From Ohio

Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams

Red Molly

Saw Eddie from Ohio in Fairfax County VA years ago. Found out the girl in the band wrote the song "What's going on" that was a hit for 4 nonblondes.

I have one:

The Hindu Love Gods! Only one album and there wont be anymore (This band was Warren Zevon backed by REM minus Michael Stipe) Mostly Blues, but an awesome cover of Prince's Rasberry Beret!

Also, if no one else has mentioned them, The Hold Steady.

Whenever I listen to The Hold Steady I feel like I'm surrounded by really good friends telling stories about the crazy thing that happened last weekend. Great band. Miss the keyboard player, Franz Nicolay, for sure.

bradleyd3 - 2008-07-02 10:43 AM If you like Texas Country (not that cr@p that Nashville puts out) check out Rich O'Toole. Realative new-commer.....great lyrics.....good songs.....plays for small crowds in Texas.

X2 and don't forget Sonny Burgess "The more I'm around some people the  more I like my dog"

I'll see your Texas Country, and raise you Corb Lund & The Hurtin' Albertans.

Took my son to see the Arctic Monkeys a couple of years ago and a band called We are Scientists were the opening act.

They became my son's favorite band and I like them as well.

We saw them last October.  While waiting in line to get in, the band came out and chatted us up.

That was really cool.

Seems most of my music has always been unpopular mostly underground stuff (although these days "underground/ alternative" have a different meaning)... I have just always liked different.

Husker Du

Minutemen

Firehose

Belly

The Capulets

Clutch

House Martins

X

I love The Pogues, Arctic Monkeys, XTC, Billy Bragg, The Jam... I am almost 45 and I constantly get looked down upon by women in Raleigh because my music tastes have "never grown up."

Still Remains - They are harder punk/screamo I guess but I love them.  They broke up a couple years back.  I remember driving 2 hours to see them with some local bands and at the door they asked you who you were there to see.  The local bands had a ton of people there to see them.  Me and my girlfriend at the time were the only ones who said Still Remains.
