Subject: The Best Bands You Think No One's Heard But You

Ok, we did this last week for movies, but what are the best sleepers you've heard as far as bands or musical performers-- the relatively unknown gems that most people have probably never heard of?

Perhaps a better choice would be the Velvet Underground, but I'm going to assume that they don't qualify as a "relatively unknown," and go with my second choice of Big Star.

Led by Alex Chilton (perhaps better known as the lead singer of the Boxtops 60s hit "The Letter" ), this quintessential power pop band recorded two albums at Ardent Studios in Memphis which were then poorly promoted and distributed and lost to the masses. The Third album, also called Sister Lover, is mostly a Chilton solo project that is essential listening.

As a band Big Star was short-lived but, like VU, was extremely influential; one can cite REM, the Replacements, the Posies and Primal Scream among their progeny. The Replacements included a homage song, "Alex Chilton," on Pleased to Meet Me.

Probably best known are the songs "September Gurls," "Back of a Car," and "In the Street," which was used as the theme song for That '70s Show.

What are yours?

Sweet Vine... a 90s band that I randomly picked up their CD. Don't know much about them really.

Martin Sexton... he is kinda popular and has put out multiple albums... not very main stream and not a lot of people I know or meet know who he is... A great jazz/blues singer. Inspiration to a bunch of new artists out there the biggest names being Gavin DeGraw and John Mayer.

If you like Texas Country (not that cr@p that Nashville puts out) check out Rich O'Toole. Realative new-commer.....great lyrics.....good songs.....plays for small crowds in Texas.

I have a few, although I haven't listened to the radio in years so I really don't know what other folks have heard or not.

Lloyd Cole -- You may know him from his "& The Commotions" 80s heyday, but he's still around and putting out some of the most literate, thoughtful, catchy tunes around. My all-time favorite artist.

Fujiya & Miyagi - Electronic "krautrockers". Ironically, no one's named Fujiya or Miyagi, but there is a guy named "&". Great running music. People may have heard them because one of their tunes is used in a Miller Genuine Draft TV spot.

Ladytron - More electronic. Again, great running music.

Hard-FI - Sound a lot like The Clash would have if they were still around today, although slightly more "pop-py" and less punk-ish. Great, anthemic pseudo-punk from working class Londoners.

Foals - Very rhythmically-based, trance-like alternative.

Athlete - 80s-influenced, heavily keyboard-based pop. Check out the "Tourist" disc first.

Quick two:

Mike Keneally: http://keneally.com/ His live shows are definately jam fests, while his studio stuff is crazy-genius. He's played with Zappa among others. Too different/original to be popular.

Adrian Belew (well, actually, he's pretty well known): Don't get me started. To get an idea, go to: http://adrianbelew.net/and scroll down to "Adrian's Life in a Nutshel". Chances are you have some of his work in your collection and don't even know it.

Funny, both of these guys played with Zappa and I'n not even a big Zappa fan.

Guided by Voices called it a day at the end of 2004 but this is still pretty much my favorite band ever..So much great stuff, you could spend literally years sifting through it all..

The first two albums with a wide release, 'Bee1000' and 'Alien Lanes', pretty much defined lo-fi and would be the best place to start. No mistake about it: Full on RockandRoll.

Carbon Leaf- Irish folk, alternative fusion. The singer is a poet:

Holiday quiet on these streets, except for some stubborn leaves
That didn't fall with the fall, and now they clatter in vain
Holiday sky, midnight clear
Wind is high, hard to steer
Old muffler rumbles like an old fighter plane
In search of some rest, in search of a break
From a life of tests where something's always at stake
Where something's always so far
What about my broken car?
What about my life so far?
What about my dream?
What about.....

What about everything?
What about aeroplanes?
And what about ships that drank the sea?
What about...
What about the moon and stars?
What about soldier battle scars
And all the anger that they eat?
I am not in need

The Long Winters - Alternative Rock-ish (esp.  "Blue Diamonds" and "Cinnamon"

Atmosphere - Hip Hop

Atmosphere, assuming you like hip hop, is amazing.  You can actually understand what he's saying unlike so many rappers today.  Plus, since he's underground, he doesn't rap about cars, women, and money.  Really powerful lyrics.  If you want to download some here are some of his best: "Trying to Find a Balance", "Always Coming Back Home to You", "Little Man", "Pour Me Another", "Say Hey There"....  The list goes on and on.....

I'll second this. Robert Pollard was the definition of "Mad Genius."

To this thread I'll add Built to Spill. While being marginally more well known than some of the bands mentioned in here, none were better at their peak that BTS.  Their pinnacle musically was 1997's Keep it Like a Secret - maybe my favorite album ever. Certainly an album that reminds me of all the great times I had in the Summer of 1999!

I'm sure you've seen Carbon Leaf a few times seeing as they are in your backyard in Richmond. Love Great Big Sea too. If you like Carbon Leaf you shoud try Blue Merle. They broke up after one album but the whole record is great. Bluegrass/Alternative type of sound.

The Toadies

They are a favorite of mine, kinda crazy for them actually. They are on tour after a long break for a break up in the band. I love them, you have to idea.

Anyone heard of them, or do I just have lame friends? (

Michael Franti and Spearhead - Amazing mixture of rock, reggae, and hip hop with political undertones.  Put on an amazing show, soooo much energy.
The Beautiful Girls (band from Australia) - mellow Jack Johnson kind of sound, but still unique
Grace Potter and the Nocturnals - This chick can rock out like Joan Jett in the 80's

"Possum Kingdom" is still one of my favorite workout songs.

I have no idea what "dark secret" dude is singing about, but I'm pretty sure I don't want to know.

You just have lame friends......who hasn't heard of the Toadies. I'm from Dallas, so they were pretty popular back in the 90s.....but they got a lot of radio play throughout the country with "Tyler" and "Possum Kingdom"......

Plus "Possum Kingdom was featured on Guitar Hero II...........

He's a vampire.

I'm actually going to see the Toadies at Lollapalooza this year.  :-)

For mine, I'd say check out Kings of Leon.  They're a southern rock band from Nashville, and put on a hell of a live show.
