You don't see pages of debate about swapping an 11-23 cassette for a 12-27. Oh, great... Thanks for bringing that up, JK! But, since we're on it, why not a compact AND a 12/27? |

Careful, I ride a compact & 12/25. Are you calling me out Dude, you should be embarrassed to have a compact and a disc on the same bike. The reason I mentioned the compact and 12/27 is that I tried that combo and HATED it! Not that I'm a fast cyclist to begin with, but I couldn't get out of my own way with that gearing. Personally, I’ll never ride a compact again. But to each his/her own... |

Not that I'm a fast cyclist to begin with, but I couldn't get out of my own way with that gearing. I rode a 50-34 compact and 12/25 for most of the last year (starting after Harriman in '07). I like it OK. The thing that actually bothers me more is the 12-25 vs. the 50-34. I like the tighter spacing on my 11-23 (which I recently put back on before a flat race) much better. It's the fine-tuning on the cassette that I find makes the bigger difference for me, not the big jump on the rings. But when the roads really turn up, I'll sacrifice that tighter gearing for those extra teeth on the big cogs. But, of course, this is simply MY gearing preference. (Hopefully this thread will finally die over the weekend. ) |

When I do I'm not sure if I should stay with tubulars or go to clinchers though |

What's wrong w/ an aluminum frame??? And, speaking of "aluminum," I wonder if the carbon FSA cranks the OP is getting are really carbon or the aluminum cranks w/ carbon stickers on them. I can't speak to the flex question, but I have to think that if you're tourqueing hard enough on the crank that you're flexing the rings, maybe you need to be using a lower gear... Not sure if TT'ers will embrace that philosophy. Then again, 53s are for sissies during those races anyways, so all this is mute |

well...then you would be DQed as recumbents aren't allowed in TRIs. Maybe a disk on a MTB or beach crusier? |

Coach 10487 Boston, MA | Subject: RE: To go Compact or Not... JohnnyKay - 2008-08-15 8:33 AM Agreed, in fact in my very 1st post I told Aikido "choose whatever you feel most comfortable with" as I don’t think gearing is that much of an issue for 99% of the triathlon courses. I did question the whole "compact cranks will save the legs for the run". I interpret it as spinning will save the legs which is inaccurate to state as cadence/rpms is a function of preference and the ability of an athlete to ride/run is a function of fitness and pacing. Gearing can affect this if the course is pretty demanding and the athlete’s ability to ride it with his/her current gearing causes to ‘gear out’ on tough climbs to the point that he/she has to spike power above the ideal ranges. But when considering that for most IMs or 70.3s any compact or rear 23-25 cassette will allow athletes to accomplish this; just because the rpm drop to 70 or 60 is not (or shouldn't be ) an issue as long as the power is not spiking consistently and extendedly over threshold for IM or VO2 for HIM. Believe what?!?! IT'S JUST GEARING!!!!!!! I can't understand how we can go pages and pages on compact cranks. You don't see pages of debate about swapping an 11-23 cassette for a 12-27. It's the same kind of decision. Sheesh... Anyway, I think because I made that statement, it is when the thread took off debating that, but again I don’t think the discussion here is about whether using a compact can be good or not. I've toyed with the idea of trying a compact on my road bike to see if the gearing is smoother, but never cuz it will save my legs! |
